Gibson’s Classic Solidbody Bass

The short scale length of the Gibson SG Standard Bass solidbody electric bass is perfect for the fat, full thump that made this one of the most prized vintage designs out there. A lot of that warmth is thanks to the mahogany body and neck. The SG Bass is also perfect for any style of gig, thanks to its pair of versatile humbucking pickups. The super-comfortable 30" scale makes playing this bass a breeze. Whether you need a smaller-size bass or want a bass that recalls rock ’n’ roll’s glory days, you should check out the Gibson SG Standard Bass.

Short-scale comfort and tone

The short-scale length of the neck makes it easier to navigate the fretboard and is perfect for players with smaller hands. But did you know that the scale length of a guitar or bass has a direct impact on its tone? The harmonics your bass guitar generates are spaced along the strings, based on the length of the strings. Shorter string length means that any note you play punches with more fundamental richness than a longer scale would. Take it from Sweetwater — plug the Gibson SG Standard Bass into your bass amp, and you’ll see what we mean as your low end comes alive.

SG Bass humbuckers for old-school tone

Whether you play rock, jazz, country, or metal, you’re going to love the sound of the Gibson SG Standard Bass. That’s because it sports a pair of Gibson’s huge-sounding humbucking pickups that give you the perfect blend of growl and punch. And with individual volume and tone controls, the Gibson SG Bass lets you dial in a wide range of killer tones.

Nitrocellulose lacquer finish for the look of a well-aged classic

Gibson’s SG Standard Bass wears a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” And because the finish bonds with the wood in a way polyurethane doesn’t, nitro finishes not only look vintage-y wonderful, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The SG Bass has the look, feel, and sound of a vintage classic.

Gibson SG Standard Bass Guitar Features:

  • Short-scale bass with big humbucking tone
  • Mahogany body and neck give you a warm, rich tone
  • Comfortable SG-style body
  • Shorter 30-inch scale length enhances tone and is easy to play and comfortable for beginners
  • 3-point adjustable bridge maximizes sustain and tuning stability
  • Vintage-looking nitrocellulose finish
  • Dual humbucking pickups deliver the classic Gibson bass growl

Great vintage tone

This bass has the deep thump and vintage tone I was looking for. It is also pretty versatile. You can get something like a jazz bass tone by mixing the pickups. I've always played P-bass style basses, but I quickly got comfortable with the short scale. This bass is very easy to play, and it is very light compared to any P-bass or Jazz bass I've played. It is subject to neck dive, but that has not really bothered me when I'm actually playing rather than looking to demonstrate this well-known design shortcoming.

I was very skeptical of Gibson build quality, but this bass seems very well put together. The fretwork is great and the setup was just right. Overall is has a very high-quality feel to it. It looks great too. The only shortcoming is that the finish seems kind of thick and wavy along the edge of the headstock and around the neck joint.
Music background: I play mostly classic rock and blues. I also play with an acoustic vocal duo that does folk and country.

Gibson craftsmanship is grift

Sounds no better than basses I've played at 1/4 the price. Last night found that the neck pickup is not secured or anchored to anything when I heard a clunking sound coming from it. Removed the cover and found nothing connecting the pickup cover to the pickup and nothing fastening the pickup to the body. They just hold it in place with a piece of foam with cheap glue on it until it is bought. Then as it's a design flaw, there's nothing to warranty.

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
