Compact, Comprehensive Control: Guitar and Beyond

When physical, digital, virtual, and analog instruments, accessories, and effects can all play together in one guitar-focused or multi-instrumental ecosystem, creative possibilities abound. However, making the most of such a varied palette means powerful, focused control to suit. This is where Hotone’s Ampero Control comes into play. Contrasting its ultra-compact chassis and sleek profile, the Ampero Control is a Bluetooth MIDI foot controller that’s teeming with power and versatility, supplying immense degrees of customizable MIDI control for nearly any physical or virtual MIDI-compatible gear. From amps, pedals, and loopers to drum machines, synths, stage lights, and even other apps (via Bluetooth), Sweetwater’s gigging musicians revel in the Ampero Control’s immense flexibility. Did we mention you can connect additional expression footswitches? No matter how — or what — you play, where there’s MIDI, there’s Ampero Control capability. Plus, the free-to-download iOS and Android mobile app gives you further degrees of on-the-go customization.

Masterful MIDI: wield multitudes of musical possibilities

Across its 5-pin MIDI in, out, and thru I/O; a MIDI-capable USB-B port; and wireless MIDI over Bluetooth, Ampero Control is outfitted to integrate with nearly any arrangement. Each of its four footswitches can transmit up to 16 distinct MIDI messages, with variable input options letting you discern between controls by pressing or holding the footswitch. Furthermore, these MIDI messages come in several creativity-inducing varieties, including PC (Program Change), CC (Control Change), Note On, Note Off, and more. With these, any number of effects pedals, amps, synths, peripherals, and even your DAW are one tap away. Plus, you can group footswitches in 32-message pairs, expanding your control capabilities even further, with up to 100 banks to store and recall your finely honed setups. What’s more, the inclusion of two rear-mounted 1/4-inch jacks accommodates external expression or control pedals, each of which is freely assignable across your MIDI output, granting access to greater degrees of nuance to match your most-imaginative menagerie of MIDI-fueled musicality.

Ampero Control app: dedicated iOS and Android mobile authority

Because Ampero Control can be used with practically any MIDI-capable instrument, effect, DAW, or device, Hotone developed a dedicated iOS and Android app that provides deep customization capabilities. Rather than compromise real estate on the Ampero Control (which would sacrifice its slim profile and seamless spatial integration) with a dedicated screen of cluttered menu-diving, the Ampero Control app is your all-encompassing control center. Every aspect of MIDI behavior, connections, channel customization, on-the-fly edits, and more can be painlessly performed from the app, wherever your music takes you.

Hotone: scorching tones that take you to new sonic heights

Founded in 2012, Hotone’s innovative guitar and bass products are engineered with a singular aim: to inspire the creativity and artistry of musicians worldwide. A steadfast dedication to tone is apparent from the company’s name (pronounced “hot tone”), and its forward-thinking lineup lives up to that title with superb-sounding floor processors, pedals, amplifiers, and more. Scores of Sweetwater musicians choose Hotone’s professional-grade products to power their rigs, and they’re certainly in good company — Hotone’s star-studded, genre-defying collection of artist endorsements ranges from funk guitar phenom Cory Wong to pioneering Latin Christian artist Chris Rocha.

Hotone Ampero Control Features:

  • Compact, intelligent controller provides Bluetooth MIDI foot-switching in a rugged chassis that doesn’t compromise real estate in your arrangement

Rated 3/5
Bluetooth - sort of. Momentary switch programming might misbehave.
I bought this specifically because it supported 'wireless MIDI over Bluetooth' as I'd like one less cable to mess with. The product description and the manual fail to mention, however, that this is only true for smartphones. You can't, for example, use MIDI over Bluetooth with Windows. Hotone support confirmed it won't even pair with Windows.

The smartphone app takes a bit of experimentation but after a couple of hours, it's pretty straight-forward to get the programming done. To save people time figuring this out, on iOS the app just needs permission to use Bluetooth and it will directly communicate with the Hotone controller. There's no need to pair it within iOS itself.

Another issue with this unit - and to be fair, with a lot of others on the market - the little display on the unit has decimal points for differentiating whether what's being displayed is a bank or preset number. In practice, this is pretty useless as it's nearly impossible to see. Not to mention you have to remember, ok that looks like a bank so what was in bank 003? This could sorely use an OLED display of bank name, preset name, PC/CC message sent.

One last issue I ran into was the reversal of MIDI CC commands sent for 'momentary' switch actions (where a CC message enables a device on button press, for example, and the same message with a different value disables the device on button release). I use the momentary mode to control a flanger - an effect usually used sparingly. So it made sense to have the enable message when pressing down and disable on release. This works fine but occasionally the Hotone controller reversed the commands so I ended up with the flanger on except when pressing the foot switch - the opposite of how it was programmed. Removing power and plugging power back in resolves the issue every time. I can't reproduce it at will. It just happens every now and then (usually at least once a playing session, sometimes twice). I wondered if it was the result of inadvertently catching an adjacent foot switch but experimenting with that only changed bank number, not the behavior of a preset. Keep that risk in mind if you're using this for a live gig.
