Fender's Rebel Rocker Goes Hybrid

The Jazzmaster, George Fullerton and Leo Fender's unwitting surf and noise-rock icon, makes the perfect platform for Fender's third wave of Acoustasonic hybrid acoustic-electric instruments. Playing out on the weekends? The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's bridge-position Acoustasonic Shawbucker magnetic pickup packs vine-ripened California cleans and the gnarliest garage rock tones this side of 1991, even without an amp in tow. But toggle positions and roll the Blend knob, and you'll unearth a slew of blissfully sweet acoustic voicings that are perfect for Sunday cafe gigs. The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's audaciously offset spruce-on-mahogany SIRS body is built to resonate like an acoustic instrument without succumbing to the feedback issues of other stage acoustics. And yet, thanks to a Modern Deep "C" mahogany neck and thinline Jazzmaster body, this hybrid provides effortless electric-like playability up and down the fingerboard. The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's bleeding-edge 3-pickup system — the Shawbucker humbucker plus a Fishman Matrix undersaddle system and a percussive body sensor pickup — will make you the envy of every Root, Costello, and Mascis in sight. Powering it all is a 20-hour rechargeable battery that supports simultaneous charge and play for nonstop music making wherever you play out.

Covers a range of acoustic and electric tones

How would you like to layer your acoustic rhythms with heavily processed electric tones? Or volley between sweet acoustic sweeps and tasty rock leads in the middle of a song? It’s all possible with the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster. A 5-way switching system makes accessing these diverse tones a breeze. Each position features two distinct sound profiles (clean/crunch, short-scale/dreadnought), which can be continuously varied via the rear Blend knob. Whether you’re running into a PA or an amp, the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster provides great tones to cover an insane range of musical styles.

Fender's String Instrument Resonance System (SIRS) is designed to produce rich tone whether unplugged or amplified.
"We knew the guitar would follow in the 'rowdy cousin' tradition of so many modified Jazzmaster electrics. When you plug in and experiment with the Blend control, you’ll hear electric sounds that go from 'fat and clean' to 'right at home with a 4 x 12 cabinet.'" — Fender Chief Engineer Tim Shaw

Acoustasonic Shawbucker bridge pickup

Fender Chief Engineer Tim Shaw holds claim to some of the most revered vintage pickup re-creations of our day. Among his more recognized Fender designs is the "Shawbucker" humbucking pickup: a love letter to Tim's more than 35 years of guitar industry service and a major propellent of Fender's HH and HSS electric guitars circa 2015 onward. For the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's specially calibrated Acoustasonic Shawbucker pickup, Tim and Fender went back to the drawing board. "We realized we needed a higher-output pickup than normal because of the unique Acoustasonic body construction," says Tim. "The Acoustasonic Shawbucker has pole pieces that are factory preset from the back, and they’re compensated for bronze strings." This calibration permits pure electric tones you'd never believe could come from an "acoustic" instrument. "When you plug-in and experiment with the Blend control," Tim continues, "You’ll hear electric sounds that go from 'fat and clean' to 'right at home with a 4 x 12 cabinet.'" Plus, as with all Acoustasonic guitars, the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's spanky, snarly electric tones are designed to sound great running into a traditional speaker cabinet or direct into a full-range PA.

Fishman Matrix undersaddle system

The Fishman Matrix is one of the world’s best-selling acoustic pickups. In the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster, it's your ticket to a beautiful undersaddle acoustic tone with plenty of range to suit any manner of music. Onboard body modeling helps flesh out these tones in ways never before possible.

Body sensor acoustic pickup

Whether it's John Mayer acoustic slaps or a full-on Kaki King flamenco assault you're after, the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's dedicated body-top pickup, accessible in position 3, adds a percussive element that's hard to top in traditional instruments. Guitarists at Sweetwater have also found the body sensor to be useful for building percussion loops in a live setting.

10 blendable onboard voicings

Strumming, fingerpicking, and lead work all require different sounds and textures. The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster gives you access to 10 distinct acoustic and electric voicings via its traditional 5-way blade and continuously selectable A/B Blend control. Whether you’re after a big, boisterous dreadnought to fill solo space or a reduced-size short-scale to sit in a mix, it's all at your fingertips with the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster from Fender. No pedals required. Electric tones can be seamlessly blended into positions 1 and 2 to add electric grit and sustain.

  • Position 1A: Explores the cleaner side of the the Acoustasonic Shawbucker humbucking pickup
  • Position 1B: Kicks up the gain for a full-bore Jazzmaster snarl, even without pedals
  • Position 2A: The pure tone of the Fishman Matrix undersaddle pickup interacting with the guitar's unique spruce-on-mahogany SIRS construction
  • Position 2B: Adds in the bite of the overdriven Shawbucker pickup
  • Position 3A: A hi-fi acoustic tone that's crisp, detailed, and 3D-like
  • Position 3B: Blends in the body sensor for more dynamic and percussive results
  • Position 4A: Access the woody tone of a large-bodied studio accompaniment strummer
  • Position 4B: Punch through a mix with the tightness and definition of a smaller-bodied acoustic
  • Position 5A: The spangly, full-bodied harmonic tone of a miked rosewood dreadnought acoustic
  • Position 5B: The folksier, earthier tone of a slope-shouldered American icon
Players will find a curated collection of 10 blendable acoustic and electric profiles aboard the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster. The “A” voice has the Blend knob rotated fully counterclockwise; the “B” voice is fully clockwise.
A forearm contour and 20-hour rechargeable battery keep you and your Acoustasonic Jazzmaster rockin' all night long.

Iconic offset style

Fender has done a great job of retaining the style and playability of its acclaimed Jazzmaster design for an instrument as advanced as the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster. From the familiar offset-waist body to its great-playing, ebony-capped Modern Deep "C"-profile neck, everything about this guitar will make you feel right at home onstage or in the studio. Its action is a nice compromise between styles: it doesn't bottom out for strums, and it doesn't fret out for leads.

SIRS mahogany body

Unique to the Acoustasonic family of guitars is Fender's mini-soundhole mahogany body with SIRS resonance enhancement system. Paired with its transverse-braced solid Sitka spruce top, the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster resonates like no thinline guitar you’ve played before, with punchy bass and a sparkly top end that come across loud and clear through the onboard Fishman electronics.

Onboard rechargeable battery

The days of swapping out 9-volt batteries are over. The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster comes loaded with a 20-hour integrated battery, rechargeable over USB. This battery allows you to charge and play at the same time — so if you’ve got a portable battery backup, the Acoustasonic can give you days of uninterrupted play time.

Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster Hybrid Guitar Features:

  • Hybrid Jazzmaster with 10 blendable acoustic and electric voicings
  • Piezo and magnetic pickups supply an impressive range of rock, blues, country, folk, and pop tones
  • Body sensor pickup (P3) is perfect for loop building and percussive playing
  • Traditional 5-way selector with continuous Blend knob
  • SIRS mahogany body resonates like an acoustic instrument, but without the feedback issues
  • Solid Sitka spruce top adds acoustic sparkle and maturity
  • Ebony-capped Modern Deep "C" mahogany neck rivals the playability of your favorite electric
  • Tim Shaw-designed Acoustasonic Shawbucker magnetic bridge pickup supplies real-deal clean and dirty electric tones, with or without an amp and pedals
  • Fishman Matrix undersaddle piezo pickup system loaded with 6 acoustic images
  • 20-hour USB rechargeable battery with simultaneous charge and play
The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster pulls from the rainbow of Fender's custom-color catalog.

I love it so much

This is by far the best guitar that I have owned. It is an all in one making this perfect for me. I love all of the settings that it has. I love that it is portable and I can travel with it. It is great to experience such a beautiful guitar. This guitar has a beautiful acoustic and electric sound to it. It sounds even more beautiful through my amplifier. I love that I can glide smoothly through the fretboard. I love the feel and comfort of this guitar, the wood is very smooth behind the neck. I am very pleased with my purchase. Thank you Sweetwater for all of your assistance.

This Guitar Is No Gimmick

I've had this guitar since early August, so I've had time to thoroughly test drive this machine. And what a machine it is. But first I have to give kudos to Sweetwater for their excellent follow through as I had the Jazzy on backorder for months, but they always kept me up to date on the status and shipped it right out after they got it from Fender. And their estimate of when they would get one was spot on. Plus their typical excellent packing and shipping can't be beat. Thanks Alan (my Sweetwater engineer).

I'm a smallish woman who has been struggling with a standard size acoustic guitar and a small body acoustic electric Yamaha. The Yamaha is okay, but the smallish frets are difficult to finger at times. Not so the Jazzy. Generous jumbo frets on the Jazzy's ebony fretboard make it a joy to finger up and down the fretboard. And it stays in tune really well with tight, very playable strings (I think they are 11's that come with the guitar).

I was unsure how I would like the rechargeable battery thingy, and I was really disturbed when I drained it in only two days (about 5 hours of play time). But I realized that I couldn't leave the cord plugged in because that's the switch for the battery. After I learned to unplug it, it does last over 20 hours of play time. Still, I would rather see Fender have a quick swappable battery arrangement than the current setup. Strangely, the guitar does not come with a charging power supply. It does come with a nice long cord, but you have to get your own power do-hicky. I thought that was odd. But most of us have them for our cell phones so I guess they figured we didn't need it? I dunno.

The fit and finish on Jazzy is outstanding. Made in the custom shop, each guitar is unique. Mine weighs 6.45 pounds. I was surprised by how light and nimble it feels. I love running my hands over the rounded sides to feel the grain of the mahogany body. However, I am not a fan of those giant black panels on the back of the guitar body. Of course they have to be there for access to the electronics and battery, but they are jarring against the beautiful wood grain of the mahogany body. If they ever make after market panels that more closely match the body, I'm all in. Other than that, this is a well crafted guitar made with quality materials.

I was worried that the guitar might be too big for me - that I would have to reach to hit the basic open chords near the nut, but the way it sits on my lap is such that it feels right in my hands, and everything is in reach. I love that! It looks so big, but feels so small. And the C Shape neck is also a great fit for me. I've included pictures of it next to my Strat, Telle, and Yamaha acoustic. You can see that the neck seems higher, but not when you play it. Fits like a glove.

I have a few different amps (Fender Acoustic Junior Go, GTX Mustang, and Deluxe Reverb) It sounds great on all of them, and I have still to pick a favorite. I use the acoustic amp when playing at church. It's more bassy than the other amps but sounds great when plugged into their PA system. The Mustang has an unlimited number of sounds, and is a riot to play through. The Deluxe Reverb? Well, it's a Deluxe Reverb. Of course it sounds AWESOME. The combination of sounds the Jazzy has available are simply wonderful. I can sweetly play Psalm 34: The Cry Of The Poor on settings 1, 2, or 3 and switch to settings 4 or 5 and jam on Tom Petty's Refugee or Joan Jett's I Love Rock and Roll, and they sound Boss! The controls are simple and straight forward, and work well. Although it did take me awhile to figure out A from B on the blend knob as there are no labels to mar the cool look of its face.

Finally, it comes with a really sturdy gig bag, better then many you see out there. I am so happy with this guitar. I do play it unplugged at times when practicing at home, but it is not a $4,000+ acoustic slope shoulder. So it doesn't project broadly or sound as good unplugged. This is a hybrid, but done so expertly, that you will be astonished at how beautiful it sounds, and how versatile it is to play. To sum up, if you're in the market for a versatile, quality acoustic electric instrument that can closely duplicate different voicings of other high end acoustic guitars and also perform as an amazing electric, this guitar will not disappoint.

Fantastic Innovative Guitar

The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster is a fantastic guitar that you just need to try to hear what it's all about. This thing sounds fantastic no matter what I plug it into, a PA system, regular electric amp, it even sounds good not plugged as an acoustic instrument.

The neck feels just like an acoustic guitar should, but the guitar itself is super light. The variety of sounds it can produce is really impressive, combining this with a looper pedal, I can get good percussive loops by using the body sensor to play along with. From the acoustic sounds to the overdriven electric, I can't get enough of this thig. Extremely satisfied with this purchase. It absolutely sounds like an acoustic guitar when played through a regular amp.

The case it come in is also really nice, it like a hard shelled soft backpack case. The only thing I'm not used to is having to charge the guitar via the USB port, but the battery lasts a really long time so it's not even an issue.

Simply Awesome

I've owned the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster for a couple of months now and have played it at full band shows and acoustic shows. Let me say that this guitar is incredible. I run it through a Line 6 Pod Go processor, straight into the PA, for both acoustic and heavier sounds and it works perfectly for me for the sounds I am needing for a particular song. The tuners that come with the Jazzmaster are great. I have played full sets without the guitar needing retuning. I love this guitar.

Fantastic & Unique!

Always look for new/unique musical 'tools'. The research on this unique Fender series was very interesting. Always loved my 1970 electric Jazzmaster and this feels the same (minus all the weight). It puts out some great sounding electrified acoustic and humbucker. My gig-mate also uses it and is great at adding rhythmic tapping on a few songs (and the internal mic does a great job for that on setting-3). The form, fit and function are the best. No more feedback issues- a huge plus. For the very thin body, the acoustic sound is really nice. You won't miss the arm-gouging from the fat dreadnought either.
