Reviews

Lots of Struggles
I feel like this review is just as much a review of the company as it is the product, but I've honestly not been overly satisfied with 920D. It'll be a bit of a longer review, but I wanted to go through my process here to help out any other who gets this product.

I do a lot of research about products such as this before purchasing as I try to make each purchase count. There is remarkably limited reviews or any kind of sound demos for this product. I couldn't find anything showing what the mini-humbucker actually sounded like, or what the system would sound like when in place. What's more, I found one single video of someone who installed this product in their guitar, and he reported that the documentation inside of the device had the wrong diagram for the coil tap pot. He posted in that video what the correct diagram was, and I saved that. When I got my shipment in, over a year plus after that video had been created, I still had the wrong diagram. Not to worry though I had done my research! Still, there were other issues. They had sent me one with not a 3-way switch but a 5-way switch. I called them and told them the issue which they instantly sent me out a brand new 3-way control plate free of charge. (160 dollar retail on that). So now I have backups of the other parts which is nice. I was glad they worked with that so well. But after getting the new control plate wired up...I have buzzing all over the place with so much static on the sounds. The single coil pickups are meant to be hotter than normal telecaster or strat pickups by a little bit, but it was confusing on this so much. The pickups are 5 wire (ground, negative, coil tap north and south, positive), and I can't figure out where the buzz is. Also the screws that they sent in the humbucker were about 4 inches long or so? way too long for the cavity in my American Ultra guitar, so I had to trim them which was not expected. Also had to trim the ones in the middle single coil, which ended up breaking the plastic on that single coil and I had to substitute a different screw just to keep it in place. I was surprised it broke like that, and I will grant that there was some user error in there. But still made the parts feel cheaper than they probably are.

So getting to the wiring up of everything, I got it all soldered up and the tone out of each of these pickups were VERY trebbly. I wasn't expecting that really, but again there were zero tone videos released by the company so I had no idea. The quality of the switches, pots themselves, input jack, and the wiring between those are all very well done. The plate is a little bit longer than what was originally in my guitar which makes it bow up slightly (though very very slightly). And the thing that I think is worst on it is that the actual knobs have a massive screw that sticks out of them and they are very hard to get them where they are flush or straight. It kind of sucks that my wife spent so much on what was supposed to be a great system for the guitar, which I was so excited about, and then have it turn out to be so hard to actually get it to work the way I expected it to.

Things I liked: 920D instantly sent me another control plate to correct the issue for free.

Things I dislike: Overly Trebbly on the output, and much more static than I expected. Wrong diagram sent where they didn't correct the issue of wrong documentation, but just let people buy it and then have to call in to get it fixed or find that one single user video to figure it out on their own. Documentation is a simple card with what goes where (again wrong Diagram), and a phone number to call them.

I just haven't been impressed with this at all, especially for the price range on it. I am already looking to switch out what I got because it's just not giving the tones that it promised.
