A Nylon-string Guitar with the Taylor Touch!

Sure, the Taylor 814ce-N is a nylon-string classical acoustic-electric guitar, but the first time your hand caresses the slender, fast neck and its ebony fingerboard, you're in another world altogether. This guitar's supremely comfortable Grand Auditorium body resonates richly, while the ES-N electronics organically amplify every nuance of your playing. You'll hear a richer voice, with more complex harmonics and a more open sound that's incredibly vibrant. The secret is that Taylor optimized the wood thickness and bracing patterns to give you the best that the Grand Auditorium design has to offer. True to Taylor, the guitar's breathtaking visuals are punctuated with classy, understated touches. It's in the playing, though, that the Taylor 814ce-N acoustic-electric nylon-string guitar will win your heart.

A richer, more vibrant voice than ever before thanks to customized bracing

You'll notice that the Taylor 814ce-N boasts exceptionally vibrant tones with a unique character. Taylor went back to the drawing board and redesigned their bracing patterns, to get the optimum response out of each of their iconic body shapes. Taylor even added side bracing to add rigidity to the sides and enhance top and back movement. In the words of luthier Andy Powers, the updated Advanced Performance bracing pattern gives the updated 814ce-N a "nice, cushy swell and long sustain, even with a delicate touch."

Grand Auditorium body style, for exceptional resonance and clarity

Taylor's beloved Grand Auditorium body style employs the width and depth of a dreadnought. However, its waist is narrower, which gives Grand Auditorium-bodied acoustic guitars a sleeker look, with more treble zing. The Taylor 814ce-N's body style also helps to sharpen the definition of each note. When used for a traditionally small-bodied classical instrument, the sonic result is breathtaking — and like nothing you've heard before.

Exceptional tone, volume, and balance thanks to custom-tailored wood thickness

One of the things we like best about Taylor at Sweetwater is that their various body styles are designed for specific purposes, allowing you to choose a guitar that's the perfect match for your style. With the 814ce-N, Taylor takes that to another level by carefully matching the thickness of the spruce top and rosewood back and sides to the body style. They determined what the optimum wood thickness for the 814ce-N's Grand Auditorium body would be, to give you maximum tone and light weight while also being equally strong. Taylor is also using real animal protein glue (fish, in fact) instead of synthetic glue. Luthiers have been using protein glues for centuries for their incredible strength, and also for their tone. Protein glue optimizes transfer of vibrations and also holds amazingly well, which means you're sure to get a lifetime of fantastic tone from the Taylor 814ce-N acoustic-electric guitar.

Premium plugged-in tone with Taylor's ES-N electronics

Designed to faithfully reproduce the Taylor 814ce-N's native tone, Taylor's ES-N system uses patented Dynamic Sensors — optimized for nylon strings — to capture top and string vibration like never before. The Taylor ES-N system is seamlessly integrated into the design of the guitar from the ground up. You can use the onboard tone controls to give your sound added flavor, or set them flat if you want an uncolored, exceptionally clean sound.

Taylor 814ce-N Features:

  • Grand Auditorium body style gives you a dreadnought-esque projection with a more expressive upper register
  • Sitka spruce top provides a light and expressive sound
  • Indian rosewood back and sides add clarity and projection
  • Comfortable mahogany neck topped with a glassy ebony fingerboard
  • Graceful Venetian cutaway gives you access all the way up the fingerboard
  • Onboard Taylor ES-N electronics give you natural sound even when plugged in live

Reviews

Hard to describe.
I've been playing, casually, for over forty years, started playing classical and stayed with classical guitars up until a few years ago when I switched to mostly steel sting. I had a Taylor 414CE-R that I played almost exclusively for two years until my old classical guitar started calling me. Long story short, I prefer the feel and dynamic range of nylon strings over steel, however the neck profile and easy access to the higher frets make the Taylor far more enjoyable to play than my traditional, Spanish-made classical guitar. When I started playing the 814CE-N, I quickly decided that would be the only guitar for me until I finally shuffle off this mortal coil; I sold my 414CE-R and my Manuel Contreras and never looked back.
The guitar is, I would say, understated and very elegant with the lovely maple bindings off-setting the rosewood sides; this guitar is not flashy, even the inlays are very restrained, it is simplistic beauty. The feel of the guitar is amazing, being a nylon string it feels much lighter than a steel string and the Grand Auditorium body almost melts into your lap. The sound is very hard to describe, and of course highly subjective and player-centric. I play finger style with a fairly light touch, the guitar's responsiveness is amazing. From the player's side of the experience, it is pure joy to play. On a side note, the service from Sweetwater is amazing! I ordered this guitar on a Friday afternoon and had it in my hands Saturday morning! Plus, they threw in the usual small bag of candy. Special shout out to my sales engineer, Cassie, great to work with.
Addictive
First a shout out to Dustin Keesbury. Always available to guide me through all the products I buy from Sweetwater. I have owned this 814ceN for several months now and have literally become addicted to it. I had been working toward compleat finger style picking for a few years on my Taylor 416ce and wanted to move to a nylon. I have not hardly set it down. It hasn't been back in its case since I got it. Ditto everything thing else you see in the other ratings here. I will add that the Bose PA systems are a perfect match for reproducing their beautiful tone. Thanks again Dustin for your help with that. I will be calling soon as I have my eye on the new Taylor 814ce as well!

Taylor 814ce-N, Mellow, Smooth and Beautiful
Lifting up the case lid for the first time I beheld a beautiful work of craftsmanship. The luthiers at Taylor sure know how to form a guitar to perfection. Cradled perfectly in it's red felt case I had to slowly ease it straight out. Beautiful finish, solid construction, masterfully made. Well, the real test was yet to be had. I pulled up a stool and readied the guitar for it's first (by me anyway) play - "Misty" in Eb. Right off I could tell I now owned an amazing guitar. The bass response went through my chest and the high end melody rang out pitch perfect, and oh so smooth. It was just what I wanted. The intonation at the upper registers are amazing. Remember this is a nylon string instrument and those who play traditional classical guitars know all to well that challenge. As you can tell I am very pleased with my Taylor 814cw-N. As of this writing I now have a good 80 hours on it and am enjoying it very much. Looking forward to 1000 hours and beyond. Time to put it back in the case for now (I love how it just squeaks in there...). Thanks also to Kevin at Sweetwater and the Sweetwater team for the guitar inspection, hassle free purchase and delivery.
