String Up Your Mustang Bass

La Bella’s premium Stang bass strings keep your vintage Fender Mustang sounding and playing its best, eliminating the guesswork presented by the through-body design with added length tailored to vintage Mustang specs. However, La Bella took things a step further, offering these specially designed strings in various materials and designs, all with a flexible 1.75-inch tail wrap to protect the body and optimize string tension. Many Sweetwater bassists testify to the allure of a vintage Fender Mustang — La Bella Stangs not only retain vintage tone but also inject modern customization, flair, and durability. Each set offers unique tonal and aesthetic characteristics with a variety of materials to suit your preferences. Customize your vintage Mustang without sacrificing classic tone with La Bella Stang bass strings.

Strings that match your style

  • Pure Nickel Rounds: Vintage tone with a warm frequency and responsive feel
  • Stainless Steel Flats: Proprietary ribbon that's bright, responsive, and smooth
  • Super Polished: A hybrid design with a punchy tone and smooth feel
  • Gold Flats: Tonally bold with a strong mid response and a striking aesthetic
  • Black Nylon Tapes: Smooth nylon-wrapped strings with a warm, organic tone

La Bella: centuries of expertise in each set of strings

La Bella strings are the top choice for musicians ranging from world-famous artists such as Willie Nelson, Bryan Adams, and Ron Carter to everyday players like many of us here at Sweetwater. The company’s heritage reaches back to the Mari family of Salle, Italy, in the 17th century, and they became famous throughout Europe, even supplying violin strings to Amati and Stradivari. In the early 20th century, brothers Emilio and Olinto Mari moved the string operation to New York, founding the modern La Bella company. Today, La Bella strings are considered among the finest in the world, and we think you'll agree when you hear what they can do for your favorite instrument.

Reviews

smooth and round
Sound similar to roundwounds but feel like flatwounds. As described on the tin! They have a slightly "sticky" feel at first that wears off after a day or two, not sure how else to state that, much like there was a grease-coating on the strings.

These fit my vintage mustang with string-through body. They have a wrapped 'tail' that goes through the body.

They were "tuning stable" before the aforementioned stickiness had worn off. Been playing on them for a month and they still have that roundwound "zing".

I don't notice a tension difference between these and flatwounds to mention either way. They play great, would buy again.
Not so great.
For those expecting something closer to "pressure wounds" or "ground wounds", these may be a disappointment. They were to me.
I was hoping for something with a round-wound-like sound, but with a dramatically smoother surface to reduce string noise and a bit of the overtones.

These are NOT super-polished or super-smooth, or super anything.
To my eyes, they look like round wounds with ever-so-slightly smoothed edges.

To my hands, they feel very much like round-wounds.
To my ears, they sound like very buzzy (some of that is related to needing to dial-in the set up after a change to these strings, the gauges are slightly heavier than the La'Bella Deep Talkin' Mustang Flats that were on it before), and bright. Sounds like a round wound. Lots and lots of finger noise and string noise unless I'm super careful.

Honestly, these are big disappointment. If I wanted roundwounds - they'd be fine, because that's what they are.
Music background: Former touring pro, decades of playing experience.
