The Complete Auratone Package

Ask any Sweetwater engineer about Auratone 5C Super Sound Cubes. In the 1970s and '80s, these unassuming little speakers were a fixture on every professional studio console's meter bridge; giving engineers, producers, and artists a sorely needed reality check in those days of high-decibel playbacks on ginormous main monitors. Now 5C Super Sound Cubes are back and better than ever, thanks to the Auratone A2-30 Studio Reference Amplifier, a purpose-built stereo amp designed to power Sound Cubes optimally.

The legendary Auratone 5C Super Sound Cube

The new 5C (like the original) features a 4.5" full-range driver made from high-quality materials. Built-in Auratone's Nashville shop, the cabinet features a sleek, modern-looking black-laminate finish. Their ruggedness, flat response, impressive power handling, and portability have made Auratone 5C an industry-standard "real-world" reference monitor for music recording, broadcasting, and television/motion picture post.

The A2-30 Stereo Power Amp

Like the Super Sound Cubes, the A2-30 is a serious professional tool that's lean and mean, with nothing but a power switch, status LED, and pro connectivity. The amp even has the same footprint as the Sound Cubes so it looks great sitting on your desk or meter bridge. For decades, Auratones have been the gold standard for brutal honesty in monitoring, making it glaringly obvious when aspects of your mix aren’t sitting right. Sweetwater's advice: Power your 5C Super Sound Cubes optimally with the Auratone A2-30 Studio Reference Amplifier.

Auratone 5C Super Sound Cubes with A2-30 Power Amp Features:

  • Auratone 5C Super Sound Cubes (pair):
  • Driver: 4.5" full-range, 8 ohms
  • Frequency Response: 75Hz–15kHz
  • A2-30 Studio Reference Amplifier:
  • Purpose-built for powering 5C Super Sound Cubes

Magic In the Midrange!

In retrospect, I should have purchased the Auratone 5C Cubes as the first set of monitors for my studio. They are essential to me. I'm just one of those people who love to record music and prefer mixing without headphones, although I use them continuously. I know there's EQ options that can replicate a Mid-Range playback of tracks as a method for the Master Mix. I just love switching that Playback Monitor Selector, cutting out the big-boy monitors and listening to the brutally honest cubes. If you don't have a set yet, I highly suggest purchasing them ASAP and setting up your studio with a clean monitor selector of your choice. (I use the Switch Witch) Thanks to a video I watched by Colt Capperrune,(video Link added below), I made the purchase through Sweetwater Music. The cube monitors are made very well. The amp is clean and well matched. I have no complaints at all about the workmanship, sound quality or the selling price. They are an essential addition to every studio in my opinion. Thank you AURATONE and SWEETWATER!

Pretty similar to the OG

What can I say? This Auratone re-release is pretty similar to the OG Auratone.

(Disclaimer, I've only heard the OG Auratone in other recording studios. So my impressions are from memory. Also, room acoustics are also a variable. So this is very much a subjective reaction, and not a side by side A-B comparison.)

It's possible that these New-School Auratones got a tiny-tiny bit more bass on them than the OG Auratones. But the overall frequency response feels pretty similar. The sweetspot for monitor placement seems to be pretty delicate, just like the OG. But if you position the speakers correctly, these New-School Auratones have a really great stereo image, perhaps even better than the OG Auratone. Of course, that might have more to do with the A2-30 amplifier than the speakers themselves? It's possible that many people out in the wild got their OG Auratones paired with less than optimal amps? The New School speakers might also have a bit more clarity in the upper part of the spectrum?

I guess I could go on and on and nitpick nuances and minor differences between the New School and the OG Auratones (I know they exist, how could they not), but I think the more significant point would be that the New School and the OG probably have a lot more similarities than they do differences. So I guess, mission accomplished.

Nice Product - Great Service as always from Sweetwater.

I have to admit that I am still learning to use these monitors as they are so different then my Dynaudios. Using these was literally like someone walked in the room and flipped on the midrange light switch. My mixes have struggled with translation to the outside world in the midrange area so I decided to give these a try. I immediately recognized some midrange issues in a project I am working on that I did not hear in my monitors or headphones. I am very happy to have these to give me a close up picture of the midrange and an alternative reference. I would not want to mix with these alone as you would be blind on the low end or high end detail. Sweetwater delivered fast as usual. Great company.

bass kill for clarity

I'm a hip-hop/RnB producer and vocal engineer. These are good reference monitors to help you hear how all the frequencies sit together without bass and sub frequencies clouding your judgment. these monitors will also help you reference how your mix may sound on a small speaker system like the ones in your mobile phones. Between these, my adam a7x monitors, and my Behringer nekst 10 sub, I can get my mix right on the first of second try instead of on mix 5 or 6.

Auratone 5C lives up to reputation

To be honest what I really wanted was a pair of Pelonis monitors, but budget and availability were both an insurmountable challenge. Then it was a bake-off between these and a couple of other similar types of speakers. As typical the reviews are mixed (pun intended). Given the technical specs, the history, and long list of users I used the final discriminator being that Auratone was started here in my hometown of Chula Vista CA. How could you pass that up? If you're looking for something to watch the latest 4K video with HD audio surround sound and earth quaking low end then these are not it. If you want a studio tool that will absolutely open up detail in the mid-range then these will work really well. Harmonics and Sub-Harmonics from lows and highs seem represented well and you can also get a good sense of how well your mix is or is not translating. So for me, exactly what I needed, YMMV.
