PRS' Most Versatile Electric Guitar

The Paul Reed Smith 509 solidbody electric guitar boasts an amazing array of humbucking and single-coil tones thanks to five TCI-tuned single-coil pickups. The easy-to-use electronics package lets you switch between nine different tonal variations via a 5-way pickup selector and two mini toggles that come complete with a gorgeous, figured maple 10-top that adds extra tonal richness and depth. The 509 also features a mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard, a 25.25-inch scale length, abalone Birds fingerboard inlays, and a PRS-patented Gen III tremolo system paired with Phase III locking tuners for great tuning stability even when you're pulling off deep dives and bends.

Nine humbucking and single-coil tones

The PRS 509’s signature feature is its diverse pickup system. At first glance, the 509 appears to have a standard H/S/H pickup configuration, but the neck and bridge humbuckers are independent single-coil pickups placed side-by-side. Thanks to the 509’s flexible pickup switching, you can set these pickups as true single-coils or full-on humbuckers. In combination with the guitar’s 5-way pickup selector, this adds up to a total of nine distinct pickup configurations with two mini-toggle switches to control your neck and bridge selections. Paul Reed Smith and his team build every 509 pickup with their TCI (Tuned Capacitance and Inductance) tuning process, which ear-tunes each pickup to perfection before your guitar leaves PRS’ Maryland-based facility. The end result? Very musical pickups that are true to their lineage but updated for the modern player. Take it from Sweetwater’s guitar experts: the PRS 509 has the tonal variety you need for any gig.

Pattern Regular-profile neck feels great and plays smoothly

The PRS 509 features a highly playable Pattern Regular neck profile fitted with a rosewood fretboard. A hallmark of PRS quality, neck profiles are, of course, critical to your playing experience and a point where PRS perpetually excels. Perfected after years of prototyping, the Pattern Regular neck carve is based on Paul Reed Smith’s original, pre-factory neck design — the same one used on instruments Paul built in the late ’80s at PRS’s Virginia Avenue location. You’ll love the feel and playability of the PRS 509!

Revamped finish for classic feel

Never one to linger on old habits, PRS has retooled the finish process for the latest 509 models. Taking cues from Private Stock finishes that entail high-gloss nitro over a cellulose base coat, the new 509 finishes are thin, durable, and crystal clear — a perfect formula for vintage feel and superior resonance.

Paul Reed Smith 509 10-Top Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • USA-made in Maryland
  • Versatile electric guitar with a wide range of tones
  • 5-way pickup selector with 2 mini toggles offers a total of 9 different pickup combinations
  • Mahogany body with exquisite flame maple 10-top for extra sonic depth and killer looks

Why Buy Your Guitar from Sweetwater?

See how Sweetwater goes to great lengths to give you the very best online guitar buying experience. From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Great guitar- poor finish on metal

I bought a 509 two years ago here. Since it was Covid and other things it has never left my house or stored out of case. I bought a 10 top and it's a beautiful guitar-except sitting in the case the bridge has discolored on the bottom half and looks like crap. It's nickel I was told not chrome but it seems almost tarnished? It's ugly I know that. Like the finish is just gone, dull not shiny. I have a 86 Fender I bought new and it still looks new. Ditto on Ibanez and Gibson. This guitar is two years old. It shouldn't look like the bridge was made in 58.
I contacted Sweetwater who put on to PRS who basically said pound sand that's it's a finish issue - like "normal wear?" and not covered by warranty.
For the reputation of this company and cost of this guitar I expected more from PRS.
So if you like a good sounding guitar but don't mind it looking it looking antique in a couple of years buy one.

You don't even have to play guitar to know that PRS instruments are in a league of their own. With their exquisitely figured tops and premium appointments, each PRS is a playable work of art. But it goes way deeper than the surface. Every time Paul visits Sweetwater, we get a deeper look at his amazing instruments. We've even hosted several PRS Custom Shop events, complete with Paul's personal Wood Library! Whether they're his most affordable SE electric guitars, top-quality acoustics, or amps, it's always amazing to see what PRS comes up with. What's more, we keep a ton of PRS guitars in our amazing Guitar Showroom, so the staff at Sweetwater can get hands on with all of their latest models. We'd love to tell you all about them.
