Nine Different Pickup Combinations

The Paul Reed Smith 509 solidbody electric guitar boasts an amazing array of humbucking and single-coil tones, thanks to five TCi-tuned single-coil pickups mounted in the gorgeously figured carved maple 10-Top. The easy-to-use electronics package lets you switch between nine different tonal variations via a 5-way pickup selector and two mini toggles. The 509 also features a mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard, a 25.25-inch scale length, mother-of-pearl Birds inlays, and a PRS Gen III trem. The PRS 509 packs tonal versatility and flawless playability into a show-stoppingly beautiful package.

Nine humbucking and single-coil tones

What puts the PRS 509 on the map is its extremely diverse pickup system. At first glance, the 509 appears to have a standard H/S/H pickup configuration, but those humbuckers are actually independent, side-by-side single-coil pickups. But thanks to the 509’s flexible pickup switching, you can set these pickups as true single-coils or full-on humbuckers. The pickups are treated to PRS’s TCI (Tuned Capacitance and Inductance) tuning, which means the team at PRS has used their years of know-how to sculpt the sound to be perfect to their ears. The end result is a very musical pickup that’s true to its lineage, but updated for the modern player. In combination with the guitar’s 5-way pickup selector, this adds up to a total of nine distinct pickup configurations. Take it from Sweetwater’s guitar experts: the PRS 509 has the tonal variety you need for any gig.

Pattern Regular-profile neck feels great and plays smoothly

The PRS 509 gives you a Pattern Regular-profile mahogany neck fitted with a rosewood fretboard. A hallmark of PRS quality, neck shapes are, of course, critical to your playing experience. Perfected after years of prototyping, the Pattern Regular neck carve is based on Paul Reed Smith’s original, pre-factory neck design — the same one used on instruments Paul built in the late ’80s at PRS’s Virginia Avenue location. You’ll love the feel and playability of the PRS 509 electric guitar!

Revamped finish for classic feel

Never one to stand pat, PRS has retooled the finish process for their latest models. Taking cues from Private Stock finishes that entail high-gloss nitro over a cellulose CAB base coat, the result is a finish that’s thin, durable, and crystal clear — the perfect formula for vintage feel and superior resonance.

Paul Reed Smith 509 10-Top Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

After setup it's a Keeper!

I've played in, out and in between, adjusted, rewired, shielded cavities and polished frets and replaced pickups, pots, switches, pickguards, etc I.E. replaced parts in guitars for over 50 years now, and so I'm a bit set in my ways on how they should be when they come "out of the box" and I notice things from experience when they are not. I also set every guitar of mine to my liking that comes from the factory/ business I order from. I'm also picky, I don't order from everybody. I didn't own a PRS when I bought this PRS-509 and wanted a 509 in a "Tiger" finish if I got one. I probably would not have one if it was not offered on a special 0% finance that Sweetwater/Synchrony offered - THANKS for that! First, the guitar is gorgeous, prettiest thing I own. The binding and woods are done in a very handsome way by professionals who do know their stuff. Of course, that means nothing if the guitar is adjusted wrong or just doesn't sound good, to begin with. I just wish some of that 55 point inspection that Sweetwater offered up had been to "adjust" the string height and neck before shipping, as this guitar looked to be set in a "safe" configuration directly from the factory. Yes, the strings were too high and the "Truss rod" was actually a little loose when I took the cover off. It was set up for shipping purposes, but it was not set up for me/playing when I unboxed it, thus the 4 1/2 stars instead of 5. That said, once I adjusted this nice "Orange Tiger" to my liking, it sounded and felt great, altho I will have to get used to the neck. This is one "slim" feeling neck, even for my small hands. Overall after adjustments, its a keeper and one I didn't have in my collection.

2018 PRS 509 Review

I just purchased a 2018 509 in new condition... It"s not my only PRS, but it is presently my favorite. (...the novelty I suppose). Now, although the 509 condition was as advertised, the setup was not to my liking… I took the guitar to... where they know how I like my guitars set up. The guitar now plays wonderfully and I love the tone. I have a Custom 24, 3 594s (HB, P90 and a Semi-Hollow, another 2018 I bought second-hand, and a Santana Retro). I traded out of a bunch of guitars, particularly boutiques, this past year for PRS. The quality and consistency are there, while the rock rebel or vintage image is not. And that"s my point. I don"t care about the iconic image at this point. An electric is an INSTRUMENT. PRS guitars simply work better than competing brands. They stay in tune. The trem is perfect (for me). And they feel and play great. The detail, fretwork and finish are flawless.

So, here"s my suggestion. If you buy from Sweetwater (a great company), ask to speak to the tech that will set up your guitar. Tell him what you want, from setup to string brand. I think I am the beneficiary of two guitars that weren"t setup well, so they were flipped by guys that didn"t bond with them.

509 - Excellent

I began playing in 1959 (OK, a Baby Boomer), and if you name a 1st-tier guitar brand, I own it or have owned one. I had avoided PRS because I wasn't sure that the value was there. To quote my Granddaughter -- "OMG!"

This is absolutely the finest work of art that I have ever seen, touched or played. You have to experience it to believe it. The neck, the sustain, the consistency across the pickups/strings... it is just stunning.

You don't even have to play guitar to know that PRS instruments are in a league of their own. With their exquisitely figured tops and premium appointments, each PRS is a playable work of art. But it goes way deeper than the surface. Every time Paul visits Sweetwater, we get a deeper look at his amazing instruments. We've even hosted several PRS Custom Shop events, complete with Paul's personal Wood Library! Whether they're his most affordable SE electric guitars, top-quality acoustics, or amps, it's always amazing to see what PRS comes up with. What's more, we keep a ton of PRS guitars in our amazing Guitar Showroom, so the staff at Sweetwater can get hands on with all of their latest models. We'd love to tell you all about them.
