Classic Midas Preamp in a 500 Series Module

Heard by millions of concert goers and on countless live recordings, the Midas preamp has developed a devoted following among front-of-house engineers for its audiophile-grade sonics, forgiving overload tolerance, and characterful sound when pushed hard. The Midas 502 V2 mic/line preamp gives you grab-and-go access to this indispensable tool in a convenient 500 Series module. At Sweetwater, we particularly appreciate the sonic flexibility afforded by the inclusion of highpass and lowpass filters derived from the acclaimed Midas XL4 live performance mixing console and a switchable transformer-balanced output. And with 80dB of gain on tap, the Midas 502 V2 will effortlessly handle your lowest output mics.

The essence of the Midas sound

Top live sound engineers consider the Midas mic pre to be the essence of the Midas sound. The warmth, depth, spatial and ambient detail, and organic nature of that sound is the result of decades of circuit design experience and the use of top-drawer componentry. For instance, four discrete input transistors deliver top-notch transparency and ultra-low-noise performance.

Go ahead: hit it hard

The Midas 502 V2 thrives on abuse. In fact, this preamp takes on a whole new personality when driven hard. Its input stage handles up to +24dBu without a pad and features the well-loved soft clipping that adds just the right amount of harmonics to its crystal-clear sonic signature. Midas takes the 502 V2's impressive versatility even further with the inclusion of highpass and lowpass filters ported from their legendary XL4 console. The highpass filter control adjusts the hinge frequency from 10Hz to 400Hz, while the lowpass is adjustable from 1kHz to 40kHz. And if you've always wanted to be able to use your low-output ribbon mics on quieter sources, now you can — the 502 V2 features a truly impressive gain range of -20dB to +80dB!

Selectable balanced output

The 502 V2 uses the same electronically balanced output found on most Midas consoles. This delivers an extremely clean signal at very high signal levels. But for sonic versatility, the 502 V2 also gives you the option of selecting a discrete transistor-driven, transformer-balanced output stage. Engaging the TX switch gives you a more vintage sound that becomes saturated at lower frequencies when driven hard. Electronic and transformer output levels are matched to allow for easy on-the-fly A/B comparisons.

Reviews

Excellent value for excellent clarity and color
The Midas 502 delivers excellent clarity, gain, high and low pass filtering, and just a touch of harmonic distortion when you want it. LED ringed output and trim knobs make it easy to see just how hard you are pushing into the module as well as what the level is coming out. I find I can push the gain up pretty high on energetically delivered vocal at relatively close proximity to a mic without it breaking up or clipping into the module with the added benefit of being able to adjust the trim to make sure the level going out to my converters isn't clipping or going in too low.

Probably the best preamp at its price point
I have this next to Vintech, True, Cranborne, Broadhurst Gardens No. 1, MOTU racks, and three different Radial 500 units. It holds its own, no trouble at all, and the HPF and LPF make it extremely flexible. For years I've been watching/hearing reviews of the Shadow Hills Mono GAMA trying to convince myself to pop for one or two regardless of price. I saw a youtube video recently that compared one to the Midas 502 and the Midas 502 sounded better on the source, no lie. I will add another to my collection the next time I have the cash.
Great Preamp for Bass
I bought this for recording bass and acoustic tracks. It has been a very good preamp. I use it with the Midas parametric eq and compressor in the Midas L6 rack. It is a great first preamp for introduction into the 500 series gear. It is good for vocals as well, but use a different preamp for vocals. This preamp would be great for voice overs with RE20 or SM7B. I have used it in this fashion with these microphones. For singing vocals I find this preamp clean and natural, but not a warm as other preamps.

Excellent Value for a Warm, Creamy Preamp
I bought a pair of these for studio use and am very pleased. While Midas products are not typically associated with studio use, the "sound" of the Midas consoles is legendary in the live sound business. What is that sound? It's the sound of smooth, creamy distortion which comes in gently when you run them into clipping. I wondered if the 500-series modules would exhibit this same characteristic and am happy to report that they do. We did a simple comparison with our excellent Audient ASP 800 preamps, which to my ears, are very neutral and useful on most any source. When I drove them very hard in the same amount, neither sounded bad, but the Midas 502 V2 began to sound very much richer. I think the term "warm" is probably over-used in this business, but in this case, the Midas sound was warmer, fatter, and thicker, without any harshness or crunch. They are exactly what I wanted. I would choose this preamp over any number of much-more expensive "vintage" modelled units and will, in fact, buy another one. I don't really care what kind of circuit it has, whether it has transformers or discrete op-amps. It just sounds great!
Excellent on multiple Sources
Very useful Preamp for home studio use; having input and output levels on the same device saves a headaches when punching yourself in for drums/vocals/etc. Additionally, having both a High-pass and a Low-pass option is useful as well, the amount of reduction isn't massive, but when you put them on a source like a highly distorted guitar, you can cut out the fizz on the high end (>12500 k) and the 'boom' of palm mutes (
