’80s-era SSL Dynamics for Your 500 Series Rack
Solid State Logic’s B-Series Dynamics Module packs the dynamics section of the company’s legendary SL 4000 B console channel strip into a convenient 500 Series format. This hearty piece of kit is powerful enough to tackle all of your dynamics needs. Its compressor/limiter boasts three stepped ratios, along with a dedicated sidechain mode, plus automatic makeup gain for fast, easy deployment. You also get adjustable Thresh and Release knobs, with an autorelease setting, plus a built-in highpass filter. The B-Series Dynamics Module’s selectable gate/expander delivers everything from subtle noise filtering to heavy gated-snare sounds with a few knob twists. This must-have 500 Series module also includes a Link sidechain to safeguard against image shift with stereo signals. If you’ve ever wanted ’80s-era SSL-console dynamics for your studio, the Solid State Logic B-Series Dynamics Module captures that iconic sound flawlessly.

The sound that defined the ’80s
The SL 4000 B console defined the sound of the 1980s, having found a home at Le Studio in Montreal, Record Plant in Los Angeles, and — most famously — Townhouse Studio in London, where it spawned a decade’s worth of gated-snare effects. The Solid State Logic B-Series Dynamics Module includes a compressor/limiter and a gate/expander, both of which are modeled on the original circuit design of the SL 4000 B console channel strip, equipping you with dynamics processing that’s more characterful and colored than that of its successors. Many of us here at Sweetwater have fond memories of working on B series boards, and we’ve found that the B-Series Dynamics Module replicates this experience better than any other 500 Series module we’ve used.
Delivers aggressive SSL character
The Solid State Logic B-Series Dynamics Module includes everything you’d expect from an SSL console’s dynamics section. Its compressor/limiter sports three compression ratios: 2:1, 4:1, and 10:1. You also get a DS mode, which employs a fixed 10:1 ratio, along with an additional sidechain filter. The module’s gate/expander can operate as a 20:1 gate or a 2:1 expander with a push of its Exp button. You also get an Out setting that takes the gate/expander out of the circuit entirely without affecting the state of the module’s compressor/limiter.
