A Perfect Fit
I was looking to replace the dry rotted foam grille insert on my 1980 USA Made SM 58 mic several years back and the only source at the time was to buy direct through Shure.

I'm happy that Sweetwater now carries the replacement foam. The foam was a perfect replacement and easy to install. Once I completely removed the old foam I simply folded the new foam in half, placed it inside the grille sphere and gently pushed it forward until it touched the grill, then released. You can adjust the foam if needed for a better fit against the surface of the grille. No cutting or trimming necessary.

These grille inserts are excellent replacements, but you will need to cut an 1/8 of an inch off the end before they fit perfectly within the grille. I recommend folding the foam two times so cutting is more accurate. Also, when you remove the old insert, first unscrew the grille from the microphone, scrape out the old foam and blow compressed air through the grill to remove the dust from the old disintegrated foam. Then push in the new insert, run your finger around the inside to get it flush, and screw the grill back onto the microphone. Piece of cake!
Microphone maintenance - ongoing
Question:- How often are microphone grills and foam inserts Cleaned - great germ breeding grounds.
answer:- ...they need to be cleaned - washed - Regularly..
To do this ...remove Grill from mic...unscrew.... Soak the whole grill in warm to hot water...with a little bit of dish wash detergent ....this will release the foam from being stuck to the inside of the grill.
Carefully remove the foam insert and wash and rinse thoroughly ...and set aside to dry. ..if it has disintegrated...it needs to be replaced....
Now wash the grill and dry thoroughly.
When foam insert has dried ...re-insert it into grill....Then you can re-fit to mic
NOW your mic is Clean and Germ free again

Overlooked Maintenance on Shure Beta 58
I use a really old Beta58 and had been noticing a "popping" coming through the speaker when singing "p" words. I finally got around to removing the metal ball screen and found that the factory installed foam wind screen had completely disintegrated. I ordered this replacement and installed it after cleaning the ball and blowing out the mic cavity that had collected dust and debris left by the old foam. There were bits and pieces in the metal screen cavities of the ball so I cleaned it with a brush and then soaked it in a CLR/water mix. The mix didn't seem to do a whole lot but now the ball is clean and looks much better. This was pretty hard to install because the mic shaft pushes it upward when screwing the ball back on. You can't put it over the mic before putting the ball on because the shaft fits too snugly, so it needs to be put inside the ball first. I think it is the correct replacement and maybe it would be better to use a little glue to hold the foam in place on the inside of the ball, but after finagling with it I think it will work as is and doesn't seem to be as sensitive to popping. Guess I could use a regular windscreen that goes over the ball but don't think I'll need to. It was just shocking to see that there was virtually nothing left of the old foam except for some debris. This will of course work on SM58's as well so Need to check my backup mic and get another if that one needs it, but if so I'll try and order it along with some other stuff because I feel bad getting such a small order knowing SW would lose money on the shipping. Not a high cost item but seems important and easily overlooked.
