Hallmark 2-channel Compression — Reborn

Behringer’s 369 compressor pays homage to one of the recording industry’s most-lauded pieces of studio gear, supplying producers with a 2-channel suite of malleable, musical sound shaping. Measuring a svelte 2U, this rackmountable compressor offers detailed per-channel limiting and compression options, with variable dual-mono operation available for expanded sonic sculpting that won’t compromise the natural musicality of your carefully crafted sounds. Studio engineers at Sweetwater are impressed with the 369’s versatility, between variable attack speeds on the limiter, its vast range of recovery speeds, and extensive compression ratio options, all of which are bolstered by the inclusion of custom-built Midas transformers.

Versatile sonic sculpting

As the glue that melds mixes together, compressors are an integral studio tool. The 369 was meticulously crafted to maximize flexibility without sacrificing the ineffable character of your output. Compressor ratios from 1.5:1 to 6:1 are accompanied by Recovery speeds and Threshold levels spanning 100 milliseconds to over two seconds and -20 to +10dBu, respectively, all with a healthy range of gain on tap at any time. Moreover, robust switches let you instantly toggle the compressor’s attack speed, activate a bypass, or flip between Stereo and dual Mono operation, as vintage-inspired onboard VU meters display detailed, real-time Gain Reduction information.

Malleable limiting landscapes

Each channel features a dedicated Limiter suite, augmenting its variable bi-channel operation. Its +4–15dBu Threshold values and 50-millisecond to 2-plus-second Recovery speeds are attenuated by era-accurate rotary controls, with 2-way switches letting you activate the Limiter or change its Attack speed. Across both sub-modules, a veritable landscape of dynamics shaping gives you immensely malleable power to sculpt your sound, from nuanced stereo taming and subtle pulses to gravitational sound wells and evocative punch-through-the-mix sidechaining. What’s more, the 369’s connectivity suite features not only a 3-pin XLR I/O, but a 15-pin port to remote-control bypass and mono/stereo configurations, alongside sidechain linking to extend the compressor’s formidable power even further.

Behringer 369 2-channel Rackmounted Stereo Compressor Features:

  • 2U rackmountable compressor supplies detailed, 2-channel stereo sculpting without sacrificing valuable studio real estate
  • Onboard Midas transformers were custom built to ensure robust musicality that honors its 1985-born predecessor
  • Per-channel Compressor and Limiter suites offer versatile ranges of sonic sculpting and dynamics shaping to support multitudes of sound design opportunities
  • Onboard VU meters display Gain Reduction information in real time to streamline mixing
  • Era-accurate rotary encoders and robust toggle-switches provide detailed attenuation and satisfying tactility
  • Variable Attack speeds and Limiter/Compressor activation for each channel allow for detailed, dynamic mixing that won’t sacrifice core sonic character
  • Selectable Stereo and dual Mono operation accommodate numerous approaches to composition and post-production refinement
  • Balanced 3-pin XLR stereo I/O is rear-mounted for seamless studio integration
  • Rear 15-pin Remote Control port expands operational configurations and sidechain linking for diverse use and control

Reviews

Good compressor but poor quality knobs
I can't afford the the NEVE 33609 so I had been using the Ik multimedia plugin version. When this came out, I was ecstatic. This compressor sounds good but of course I can't directly compare it to the original unit. My only complaint are the knobs. After about 4 uses, one of the knobs broke off. So I had to purchase some aftermarket knobs (that don't match the originals, smh). But they work. So if you purchase it, be ready to purchase replacement knobs.

Lots of bang for the $
Quite chuffed with this one. It's got two killer MIDAS transformers driving some huge sweetened sound and some other very nice components. The build is pretty solid. Not sure about the limiter section, but it is fairly decent at catching peaks. I really need to spend more time with it. The compressor section is very transparent and passing audio through gives it a nice polish and glue. It is a nice piece of hardware and for the price, it's fantastic. Would have liked to have a "Link" option to slave channel 2 with 1...Not the end of the world. The pots are stepped, but getting both channels to match is a little bit of a chore. Also, the knobs that came with this unit are very poor. Not the best for stepped pots, so will be replacing them in the near future. The toggle switches are a nice touch and seem to be good. Overall, great stereo compressor. Has lots of uses. I have mainly been running it on my mix bus and it seems to do well there. Could also see placing it on a drum bus as well.
Behringer 369 Compressor
Beware Potentiometer Knobs have a design flaw.................. "Absolute Junk" ready to break on first turn which some did. The compressor/ Limiter sounds good for the price............Sweetwater sent me a new unit, Thumbs Up To Sweetwater. I reinforced the knobs see picture. Apparently Behringer was aware of this design flaw for a while.
Stop Comparing Old Behringer to todays Behringer
This is a legitimate piece of gear! The reason I am not giving it a full 5 stars is because of the cheap plastic knobs. As far as build and sound quality, I dare even the most seasoned engineer to identify which is which within a solid mix. Yes, it's that good!

Behringer is doing things for the next generation of engineers that Neve, SSL, API, and others should be doing themselves. In the meantime, as an engineer who has worked in some of the top recording studios in the world and with some of the greatest artists of my generation (late 70s, 80s, 90s, early 2000s - absolutely the greatest era in music) I would HIGHLY recommend this compressor and other Behringer products.

Behringer Is Not The Same Anymore!
I've recently bought a lot of the newer behringer equipment for my new studio. For both music, and podcasts. This was the last of about 6 rack units I bought and this is by far my favorite. This compressor is awesome for voice over, vocals, and mix bus. I really want a 2nd one. The only I could ask for is better knobs. I reinforced mine with paper so that the plastic inside the knob doesn't flex and break. I love the look of the OG knobs and did that instead of different ones. This thing really does something special to dry and thin sounding mixes. I really don't care how it sounds in comparison to a real neve. I don't even care for a real neve anymore. I could have 6 of these and cables for that price. I want to say everything I just said about the 1273 as well. Behringer really did their thing on this. It's very clean sounding but not sterile like a plugin is. I've tried the plugin versions and they are not like this. Knobs are its only downfall, but price makes up for it
