Buchla-style Possibilities for Eurorack Sound Design
Tiptop Audio continues to succeed in the daunting task of transmogrifying the esoteric ethos of Don Buchla’s iconic modules into a Eurorack format, all the while preserving the nuances that make their lauded output functions something greater than the sum of their parts. With the 207t, Tiptop continues to make good on Buchla’s blessing with a painstakingly researched and faithful re-creation of Buchla’s original 207 mixer and preamp module. Like its predecessor, the 28HP 207t is a 6-in, 2-out audio mixer that features a distinct set of management tools, as well as a variable-gain preamp subsection that can operate entirely independently from the rest of the mixer. Evolved mixing and more
A 6-channel mixer by itself would clearly benefit any Eurorack arrangement for numerous creative, practical, and stylistic reasons, but — like the Buchla 207 before it — the 207t is a modular module whose multitudes of operations and carefully individuated functions elevate the relatively simple concept of a mixer into a modular multi-tool. Each of the six audio inputs can be individually attenuated, outfitted with per-channel monitor and program switches, as well as panning control. Channels two through four have their panning values adjusted with ergonomic knobs coated in the hallmark shade of Buchla blue. The first and sixth channels, however, are panned via CV inputs for each channel, with increasing values panning the audio in the opposing direction of the channels’ relative positions on the interface. Dedicated monitor outputs and chain-linking additional modules via the expansion inputs drastically increase interoperative creativity. An onboard preamp features variable gain controls, which can be coupled with audio I/O to be used with the mixer inputs or for a separate, unrelated audio source!
