Vintage Marshall Looks And Tone

We spend a lot of time trying to re-create the sound of vintage gear and finding a classic that is in as good a shape as it sounds, is not easy or inexpensive to do. And of course, the problem with buying 30-year old equipment is that, well, it's thirty years old. Speakers dry out, contacts corrode, and grille cloths and cabinets get dinged up. So, what's the best way to go if you want a stack with vintage Marshall sound and looks? Easy. The Marshall 1960TV speaker cabinets.

Marshall 1960TV at a Glance:
  • Classic looks and vintage tone
  • 25-watt Celestion Greenback speakers

Classic looks and vintage tone
To re-create the classic looks and tones of yesteryear, Marshall offers the 1960TV cabinet. The 1960TV houses four Marshall/Celestion designed re-issue 25-watt Greenback speakers and is finished with the mid- to late-'60s style EC fret cloth and the smoother levant covering. The Marshall 1960TV stands an impressive 4 inches taller than a standard 4 x 12" - hence the 'TV' in its name which is an acronym for 'Tall, Vintage'.

25-watt Celestion Greenback speakers
These speakers are known for being very responsive, with more peaks in the upper mids and highs. Many great guitar solos have been voiced with the G12M Greenback speakers. The G12M was the first speaker produced by Celestion to feature a ceramic magnet assembly. Every subtlety of the player's dynamic style becomes wonderfully articulated. Today, as ever, the Greenback exudes a warmth and woodiness and yet retains the brightness and punch needed to cut through the rest of the band. Ideally suited to a blues-rock style, the Greenback is a must-have speaker for anyone seeking classic tone.

Marshall 1960TV Features:
  • Extra-tall cabinet
  • 25-watt Celestion Greenback speakers
  • Grey EC grille cloth and gold piping
  • Small size white logo with gold foil
  • Black levant vinyl/gold beading on cabinet
  • Finger-locked joints on all 4 corners of the cabinet's frame to ensure a tight fit between sides, make the cabinet less susceptible to damage, and allow the entire cabinet to resonate sympathetically with the sound from the speakers
  • Castors are standard and can be removed if desired
  • 100 watts at 16 ohms
Marshall 1960TV cabinets: When you must have the distinctive tone and looks of vintage Marshall cabinets, go for the real thing. Accept no substitutes!

Marshall 1960TV Cabinet
Working with Sweetwater is the best, good words for Spencer, Nathan and Lanette... They assured my Marshall 1960TV cab shipment... This is my 2nd 1960TV purchase and own... Playing through a TSL 100, SLO 100 or 2203x, it's so natural in sound from any guitar thanks to the G12M25 speakers... Love the extra tall as I think the sound is not so condensed and projects better... Cabinet is just beautiful... Working with Sweetwater is a no brainer as their customer service and satisfaction of product a 10...

Marshall 1960TV Cabinet
This is my 2nd 1960TV cab... Whether playing through my Solano, TSL or 2203x, this cab sounds great... Still breaking in, but love tge Greenback sound... The looks of a taller cabinet really stands out and the grill cloth is perfect... The G12M speakers are very natural sounding... Happy with another...

Great Sound
I haven’t had to lug this around yet but I am running a JTM45 into it and couldn’t be happier with the sound. Great bass response and the highs aren’t piercing. Worth the price in my opinion.

Looks great too!

They don't make them like they used to.

I've owned four different Marshall 1960TV cabs from three different decades. They all were made in England and they all had made in England Greenbacks inside them, which sound fantastic to my ears. The oversized Tall Vintage cab shifts the midrange focus lower, and really warms the tone up, which I prefer to the brighter sounding 1960A and 1960B cabs. Plus I love the vintage look with the old school tolex and gold piping. They really look great with my '73 Super Lead and Metropoulos Metroplex heads.

Three of the 1960TV cabs I owned were older ones. Two from the 90's and one from the 2000's. Recently, I acquired a newer 1960TV that was made in 2024.

The newest cab from 2024 was not put together as well as the older ones in my opinion. The thing that stood out to me the most, was that the screws that tighten the speakers to the baffle were tightened way too much. Which caused the frames of all four greenbacks to be bent to the point where the metal touched the baffle, at every screw point. You could still see the extra thick cork gasket in between the screws where it was bent. Ted Weber of Weber speakers talked about this problem in his articles about speaker installation, and said the screws need only be finger tight to prevent possible premature speaker failure.

The older cabs did not have that issue, and all the speakers were mounted with even torque and the speaker frames remained straight. Also, the cork gaskets were noticeably thinner and can barely be seen under the speaker frames of the older cabs.

Some positives for the new cab are that Marshall used much thicker gauge wire going to each speaker and the jack. The handles and the skid plates have Marshall logos on them, which the older ones don't have, which gives a nice authentic visual appeal.

Lastly, for the amount that Marshall charges for these cabs, put some metal handles on them already. Those cheap plastic handles always come loose eventually and start rattling bad. Luckily, metal replacements and be bought from Penn Elcom, for around $. Totally worth it if you lift your cab regularly. Also, Marshall needs to solder the speaker connections in these premium cabs. The spade connectors work ok, but soldering the connectors would put the Marshall 1960TV cab on par with the Friedman BE412 or the Bogner 412 cabs.

There are countless "British"-style guitar amplifiers out there, but take it from the lifelong guitarists and tone connoisseurs at Sweetwater, when it comes to Marshall tone, there's nothing like the real thing. We've played them all, from vintage JTM45s and the ultra-cool Plexi reissue to modern handmade masterpieces such as the JVM410. There isn't a model among them we can't recommend with total confidence, and that includes their more affordable models too, like MG, DSL, and Code series amps. Thanks to our tight relationship with Marshall, Sweetwater's always on the cutting edge of their latest designs, custom models, and limited-edition gems. If you want iconic tone from across the pond, you want Marshall, and your Sweetwater Sales Engineer will help you find the perfect one.
