Dual-channel 1073-style Preamp with Highpass Filter

The classic Neve 1073 wrote the book on characterful mic preamplification, so in designing its 1073MPF dual-channel mic/line preamp, BAE aimed high. It's amazing how well they succeeded. Done up in classic RAF blue-gray livery, the handwired, transformer-coupled, pure Class A 1073MPF is quite versatile, with 71dB of gain that lets you capture subdued sources with your favorite ribbon mic. Cranking the main gain stage enhances your tracks with tasty vintage-style coloration. The 1073MPF includes a highpass filter that lets you roll off mud, rumble, and other low-frequency content that can mar an otherwise perfect take. Under the bonnet reside the finest components, such as Carnhill transformers — like those found in vintage 1073s. Also onboard: a DI jack, polarity reverse, 48V phantom power, and selectable impedance to optimally match a variety of microphones. The 1073MPF delivers distinctive Class A sound with a harmonically rich bottom end, focused midrange, and slightly resonant highs. If you want a pre with personality and punch, Sweetwater recommends the BAE 1073MPF. It's the sound of rock 'n' roll.

BAE 1073MPF Dual Channel Features:

  • All Class A, hand-wired transformer-coupled design
  • 71dB of gain on tap handles low-output ribbon mics
  • Highpass filter: Off, 50Hz, 80Hz, 160Hz, and 300Hz

  • Handles line-level inputs for added versatility

  • Polarity reverse switch
  • Same Carnhill St Ives transformers as the 1073 and 1084
  • Frequency response: 10Hz-55kHz (-3dB)

Reviews

This is it!
Yeah, well - this thing is just a beast.

I waited for ages to pull the trigger on this, obsessed about reviews and comparisons. I've used a Neve 1073SPX extensively, and was never really all that impressed by it, felt harsh to me. Decent, but not a real 1073 sound IMHO. In the 90s and early 2000s I worked in many studios that had Vintage Neve consoles, and I've kinda be missing that sound ever since. This is THAT SOUND (minus the multimillion dollar room acoustics lol)!

Let's put it this way - I've never been a huge fan of the U87, but it sounds freakin' fantastic through this pre, as do others I've tried today - KM184s, SM7b and Sen 441. It's literally like they're different microphones. Then I just ran a mix through it, and it sounded balanced, punchy, wide, beefy, natural. Crazy good.

Tried the BAE Dual MP first (left channel had an issue - had to send back), that was cool too - but this filter feels completely worth it! Thanks Tyler Moore for always making things right.

Now I want a BAE CONSOLE!
AWESOME PRO SOUND !
Every Pre Amp I get ...the first thing I do is run my Shure beta sm 58 though it as a base line sound test ...wowza! BAE got it ... I chose this model so I can bring in different EQs to tastes and I can not wait to try it on my mix bus too ! Another cool surprise was the Highpass Filter @ 300.. it has this cool mid range radio effect . Funk and traditional & Modern Hip Hop Vocals are my style and they work so well with the BEA 1073MPF ! def recommend . Go express your self !

This one is the one to get!
For that Neve sound this dual channel is really hard to beat. Sounds warm and lush, easy to find great sounds. The addition of the filter is perfect! The only wish to make it perfect: an easy-to-use VU for fast/easy settings, but hey not many do. This is a great performer for sure. Sonic Gold!
There's magic in there....
BAE 1073 preamps have been described as having a certain "3D" quality and some real magic. Sound on Sound's reviewer spoke of how multiple tracks recorded through the BAE 1073 begin to have this lovely "sheen" when stacked together - with full bass, clear articulate mid-range, and a lovely smooth top end.

I bought my first BAE 1073 at the suggestion of Tom Maxwell after describing my favorite recordings of the 1970s. The BAE 1073 did not disappoint. It really brings warmth and magic into a digital recording studio that is hard to describe. I know there are numerous makers of 1073 clones but, in my admittedly limited experience, these BAE units really have an ineffable quality. Condenser mics, tube mics, ribbons, dynamic mics...they all sound better when the run through this box.

It's a bit of money to drop but I hope that you have an experience similar to mine. If you do, you'll never look back and you'll be a fan for life.
