1073-style Preamp with Highpass Filter

The classic Neve 1073 wrote the book on characterful mic preamplification, so in designing the 1073MPF single-channel mic/line preamp, BAE aimed high. It's amazing how well the company succeeded. Done up in classic RAF blue-gray livery, the handwired, transformer-coupled, pure Class A 1073MPF is quite versatile, with 71dB of gain that lets you capture subdued sources with your favorite ribbon mic. Cranking the main gain stage enhances your tracks with tasty vintage-style coloration. The 1073MPF includes a highpass filter that lets you roll off mud, rumble, and other low-frequency content that can mar an otherwise perfect take. Under the bonnet reside the finest components, such as Carnhill transformers — like those found in vintage 1073s. Also onboard: a DI jack, polarity reverse, 48V phantom power, and selectable impedance to optimally match a variety of microphones. The 1073MPF delivers distinctive Class A sound with a harmonically rich bottom end, focused midrange, and slightly resonant highs. If you want a pre with personality and punch, Sweetwater recommends the BAE 1073MPF. It's the sound of rock 'n' roll.

BAE 1073MPF Single Channel Features:

  • All Class A, handwired transformer-coupled design
  • 71dB of gain on tap handles low-output ribbon mics
  • Highpass filter: Off, 50Hz, 80Hz, 160Hz, and 300Hz
  • Input impedance selector switches between 1200 and 300 ohms
  • Handles line-level inputs for added versatility
  • High-impedance DI for guitar, bass, synth, and other sources
  • Polarity reverse switch
  • Same Carnhill St Ives transformers as the 1073 and 1084
  • Frequency response: 10Hz–55kHz (-3dB)
  • Line input impedance: 10k ohms
  • Output impedance: 65 ohms
  • Common mode rejection ratio: 100dB min at 60Hz

Head and Shoulders Above Other Neve-inspired Pres
I never write SW reviews but I felt compelled to do a quick one about this pre, in case anyone can be helped by my experience. I'm a home recordist who writes/records 70s inspired rock in the folk vein. I borrowed a friend's Warm Audio WA73 preamp to record some vocals, using a 414 and 57. The pre sounded quite good, I was happy with it.

Then it came time for me to return the WA73 and invest in a pre of my own. Growing accustomed to the Neve sound I saved up to buy this BAE 1073MP. I was instantly in love with the sound. Not only that, it made me hear the vocals done with the WA73 in a whole new light—they sound bright and a bit tinny, whereas vocals through the BAE sound so sweet, smooth, and high quality. I can't imagine ever parting with this preamp.

I just wanted to encourage any of you in a similar situation: don't settle for the Warm! This BAE is worth the extra few hundred bucks, I assure you. Last thing I will say is that while I could have lived without a high pass filter I'm glad I got the BAE that includes one. It just makes recording a little easier every time.

The Best IMO!
You can't get better than the BAE 1073MPF. It is truly, hands down, the best of the NEVE style pre amps (IMO) in terms of sound quality, build and features. There is no comparison. This along with a Purple Audio MC77 Limiting Amplifier and a Pearlman TM1 large diaphragm microphone is my "go-to' vocal chain.

To Be Honest, Not The Biggest Fan
Not trying to leave a bad review or anything, seriously not, but I don't think my quality really jumped that much at all when coming from Heritage Audio or even Warm Audio's Clones but Still Better! Now for the money I don't think it was worth the investment. Later sold mine and bought at Aurora GTQ2 and man that thing really works great and gives that 1073 sound with a modern sound which is what most of my clients in RnB or Hip Hop are looking for. With that said I'm just not fully impressed with it.
