Classic 1073-style Rackmount Pre

The classic Neve 1073 wrote the book on characterful mic preamplification, so in designing their 1073MP single-channel mic/line preamp, BAE aimed high. It's amazing how well they succeeded. Done up in classic RAF blue-gray livery, the hand-wired, transformer-coupled, pure Class A 1073MP is quite versatile, with 71dB of gain that lets you capture subdued sources with your favorite ribbon mic. Cranking the main gain stage enhances your tracks with tasty vintage-style coloration. Under the bonnet reside the finest components, such as Carnhill transformers — like those found in vintage 1073s. Also onboard: a DI jack, polarity reverse, 48V phantom power, and selectable impedance to optimally match a variety of microphones. The 1073MP delivers distinctive Class A sound with a harmonically rich bottom end, focused midrange, and slightly resonant highs. If you want a pre with personality and punch, Sweetwater recommends the BAE 1073MP. It's the sound of rock 'n' roll.

BAE 1073MP Single Channel Features:

  • All Class A, hand-wired transformer-coupled design
  • 71dB of gain on tap handles low-output ribbon mics
  • Input impedance selector switches between 1200 and 300 ohms
  • Handles line-level inputs for added versatility
  • High-impedance DI for guitar, bass, synth, and other sources
  • Polarity reverse switch
  • Same Carnhill St Ives transformers as the 1073 and 1084
  • Frequency response: 10Hz-55kHz (-3dB)
  • Line input impedance: 10k ohms
  • Output impedance: 65 ohms
  • Common mode rejection ratio: 100dB min at 60Hz
  • Maximum output level: +27.4 dBu at 600ohms
  • Regulated linear power supply will run up to four channels

Reviews

The sound
I've tried some other 1073 clones but they don't do what this does. I first plugged my sm7 into this which is hilarious because of the amount of gain it needs it ends up showing you the exact sonic signature of this preamp and it's great. You're like oh, this is the sound I've heard over and over again. It gets really gritty and raunchy real quick which could be amazing on some rock/heavy metal vocals. The output circuit/transformer seems to have its own sound as well depending how hard you push it. This is just a delightful color box is how I would describe it. If it wasn't for a time consuming workflow I would get into running all kinds of stuff through this for parallel saturation as well. I don't believe any software emulations can do the particular harmonic distortion a fine piece of hardware like this does. I found the other 1073 clones I tried to really skew the overall tone to fatter low and darker on the top which is the opposite of your goal for mixing 99% of the time. This seems to skew the other way which is much more desirable. Plenty of gain without unwanted noise. It may not be the sound for every single vocal chain but it is definitely one you want to have on hand. Can't complain.
Real Deal
It's everything I had been searching for. Paired with my CL1B and my vocals finally have the depth and punch I've been trying to achieve for years. Big shout out to my Sales Engineer, Chris, for his advice, this was definitely the right direction for me to go.

Professional sounding Pre amp!! 10 stars!!
After reading the reviews on here and not seeing a single rating under five stars, I decided to give this preamp a try and ordered one. I can honestly say that it is one of the best decisions I've made. This unit doesn't deserve five stars.... it deserves 10!

The item was well packaged and the unit has a very solid professional build to it. I first plugged in my bass and WOW did it make it a difference. The tone quality and the 3D sound it gives my instrument without having to add any effects to it is just amazing. I've never had a Neve pre amp before and I can confidently say that I will be purchasing a couple more units very soon to record drums with. I also tried it out on my vocals and its just night and day compared to my focus rite isa two. Don't get more wrong, the focusrite is a great unit, but it's like a JV baseball team compared to the BAE, who would be the like the yankees. My only regret is I didn't buy the dual channel which would have saved me some space as I increase my hardware.
So Good
Been using these for years. Can't go wrong with them. When yo track an entire song using these , the magic glue just happens. The breakup is musical, the lows are warm and the highs are sweet and never harsh.
Best Preamp for Rap/Hip Hop
Already wrote a review but just had to do another.. Lol do yourself a favor and just get this Preamp!

I do Rap/Hip Hop and was looking for an external Preamp.. Sale Engineer's kept recommending Tube Preamps specifically and some had me try a couple solid state Preamps as well and they sounded good but definitely not the sound I've been searching and hoping to get..Anyways, something always told me to get a Neve 1073 so I did!

Long story short, i did the research and ended up getting this beautiful beast and there it was!! That sound! Or should I say THE SOUND!! I always wanted but in my actual home studio..

The BAE1073 is near identical to the older vintage Neves that everyone still talks about and is still highly favored to this day..

If you do Rap/Hip Hop or even Rock.. Get this Preamp Asap! You can thank me later.. Cheers
