The Pickups Eric Johnson Plays

Eric Johnson possesses some of the most awe-inducing clean and driven electric guitar tones out there. It's his ceaseless quest to perfect that sound that has led Fender to release his signature set of three single-coil pickups. Special care was taken to reproduce the exact output and sweet tone Johnson is after, utilizing a mix of Alnico 3 and Alnico 5 staggered magnets. And the Eric Johnson Strat Pickup Set boasts a hotter bridge pickup to ensure you enjoy a balanced signal across all the pickup switching positions. Now you can get the pickups Eric Johnson uses, direct from Sweetwater.

Fender Eric Johnson Signature Stratocaster Pickup Set Features:

  • Mix of Alnico 3 and 5 magnets for a warm and sweet tone
  • Hotter bridge pickup ensures output balance across the pickups
  • Cloth-covered lead wire

Reviews

Fantastic
The pickups have great tone. It served its purpose to me to make my non-strat guitar sound like a strat.
Best Live Pickups
Honestly I did not like these pickups, my second time around with an EJ strat, Two things, you have to work with them a little bit, Tone, Positions. what made me come around was the way they sounded live and even more what they sounded like in a live stream, they cut right through the mix, especially clean tones. Add a little overdrive and they growl nicely..no way is it a metal pickup. I know that Eric Johnson knows Tone!! I would get them if maybe you were looing for classic tones.
If you are going for Strat greatness, buy this set!
I'm a tube amp player. I play a copy of a Plexi called a Splawn. On a lark I borrowed my friend's EJ strat for a practice and was immediately struck by the pickups. They are a nailed set of the perfect Strat pickup set. Each position nailed. For all you gain players out there, they take gain extremely well and are very reasonably quite without a gate. The balance is remarkable. From volume balance between each, to a very colorful sweet sound that still maintains top and bottom. This set reflects aggressive or mellow playing right back to you. There are some good/great variations out there for Strats that are really cool. But if you want that straight head classic Strat sound in every position..., best I've ever played. They ride the line so well its crazy.

Eric Johnson for President!
Best ever. Thanks Ray Gonzales!
I asked my friend Ray Gonzales about these pickups. He said he loves them! I'm a 68 year old Austin musician, been around the block. I have 20 electric guitars. They have Lollar, Duncan, Benedetto, David Allen, Mojo and Mojotone pickups as we as original Jazzmaster, PAFs and DeArmond pickups. These Eric Johnson pickups, to my ears, are the best sounding pickups I own. I run into EJ from time to time. I'm gonna tell him I love these!

Great Vintage Alternative Pickups
I've been playing Fender guitars for a long time and I really am sold on the new models they are releasing. There are a lot of good things going on. Having said that, I recently acquired an American Professional II strat that I loved to play but wasn't crazy about the V Mod II pickups because I was hearing tons of mid range and a little flutter noise between the different magnets. I looked at the specs and videos on the internet reviewing the Eric Johnson Pickups. On paper they seemed to be what I was searching for from the V Mods but couldn't get out of them. EJs have a little more bass, less mids, and are balanced throughout the three pickups. I don't play Ej style music but for blues and Hendrix type stuff these pickups are so much fun to play and listen to. They remind me of custom shop pickups but they aren't trying to live in the 50s and 60s. I love them!
