A Classic Martin, Revitalized for Modern Players

Martin's 000-42 Modern Deluxe is a refreshing take on the classic auditorium body style, blending old-world style with modern refinements. Its spruce Vintage Tone System (VTS) top has been torrefied for maximum projection and harmonic excitement. The dovetail neck joint reinforces the classic Martin tone. And with its European flamed maple binding, gold frets, gold open-gear tuners, and unique 1930s-style logo on the headstock, the 000-42 Modern Deluxe looks unlike anything else from Martin’s production line. Complete with other modern advancements and a Vintage Deluxe neck shape designed for maximum comfort, there’s a lot to love about the Martin 000-42 Modern Deluxe acoustic guitar.

Comfortable Auditorium body style

The forward, balanced tone of the 000-42 comes from its Auditorium body style. This body style provides excellent projection and focus, perfect for competing with a banjo (which was a common combination in the '30s). The Auditorium body style's well-balanced tone also means the 000-42 is perfect for recording in your studio.

Vintage design, modern enhancements

The luthiers at Martin are happy to embrace modern enhancements if it means better tone for you, the player. In the Martin 000-42, you’ll find modern advancements such as a steel truss rod and Liquid Metal bridge pins. And the inclusion of a carbon fiber bridge plate boosts volume without adding weight. Even the neck shape has been refined for maximum playability and comfort. Many of us Martin fans at Sweetwater are wary of changes to a winning recipe, but we’ve certainly embraced the sound of the Modern Deluxe's improvements.

VTS top: aged to perfection

Martin has perfected the process of torrefying its top woods and bracings to achieve the sound of an aged, broken-in Martin. The Vintage Tone System (VTS) lets Martin age the woods to a specific age/time period without the typical change in color of the wood from the torrefaction process. A special vintage gloss finish is then hand applied to give the guitar the coloring of a vintage instrument. Martin’s guitars with VTS tops and bracing not only look like vintage guitars, but they also possess that sought-after sound.

Martin 000-42 Modern Deluxe Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • Classic Martin style and tone with modern refinements
  • Vintage Tone System (VTS) ages the woods to a specific age/time period
  • Solid spruce top yields great projection and note definition
  • Solid East Indian rosewood back and sides for rich tone and complex harmonics
  • Innovative Liquid Metal bridge pins enhance attack and overall volume
  • Carbon fiber bridge plate enhances projection and sustain
  • Vintage Deluxe neck shape is designed for comfort and playability

Reviews

Martin Modern Deluxe 000-42
I have played high end guitars most of my life - from a Martin 1939D-28, to a custom built Circa (John Slobad) 7/8th Dreadnaught Hexaphonic guitar named "the Phoenix". This new Martin sits comfortably in that company. Easy to play, well balanced, great tone right out of the box. I have never ordered an acoustic guitar "sight unseen" before, but needed a 000 for an upcoming project.

The Martin Modern Deluxe exceeded my expectations (which are usually fairly demanding)

I paired it with an LR Baggs Anthem pickup which accurately captures the acoustic sound qualities.

It is not inexpensive- but, I believe, you can do quality work with it live or in the studio. IMHO there are very few players in the world that can "outplay" the quality of this guitar - I certainly cannot.

Nick Pasquino (my new rep) deserves a shout out for making the transaction quick and pleasant.
I love my new 000 42 Modern Deluxe
Recently (2/6/2023), I received my new Martin 000 42 Modern Deluxe guitar from Sweetwater. I think my guitar may be one of the first 000 42 MD's released to the public this year (2023). I ordered the guitar on November 29th, 2022.

I want to thank Sweetwater and my Sales Engineer, Kris Eckman for getting my guitar on order and at a great price. Buying a guitar from Sweetwater is as close as you can get to having an in-store experience when buying online. Kris has always had time for any questions I have had on gear I'm looking at. He has always been kind enough to listen to my recording of songs I'm playing, and he gave me encouragement before my first neighborhood gig, I played this past spring.

The 000 42 Modern Deluxe is everything a finger style player could want. The VTS treatment on the Spruce top works. The tone is wonderful and the sustain of the guitar is amazing. The high E string can be heard for a full 18 seconds. I measured the duration with my i-phone. I play finger style ragtime and blues music and I love the punchy base response when I dig in with a thumb pick. The treble notes are clear and piano like for the melody.

The shorter scale length of 24.9 inches helps with some stretch positions on the neck. The new asymmetrical neck shape is comfortable and fast up and down the fretboard.

The wood selection on the top and back of 000 42 is just beautiful. The grain of the top and back is straight and true. There is silk on the upper and lower bout of the top. The silk on the spruce top shines under the glossy finish. The inlay work of this guitar gives me goose bumps. The ornate torch logo inlaid in pearl on the headstock is the highlight of this work. The European flamed maple binding on the body, fingerboard, and headplate completes the looks of the guitar.

A good sounding guitar does not require bling, but I'm 68 yrs. young and this guitar makes me feel like kid every day when I pull it out of the case to play my favorite tunes. I will enjoy it forever until my ticket for life gets pulled.

Sounds Great looks great
This Guitar has great sound very well balanced. The finish is great the abalone and mop inlays are very well done. The Torrified sitka spruce top sounds better than my Adirondac topped HD28 sweetwater special. My only complaint is the high action on all Martins. It needs to be .010 inches lower at the 12th fret. Martin could provide 2 saddles a low and a high. Ben Stokes was very helpful and made my purchase experience fabulous!
Thanks Ben!
