A Handmade Guitar with Exceptional Qualities

From extensive research and development to seasoned tonewoods and master luthiery, Alvarez offers the guitar world something different with the CYM75CE Yairi Masterworks Series Classical acoustic-electric. Developed thanks to a partnership between Alvarez and the Yairi family of luthiers in Kani, Japan, the CYM75CE Classical benefits from a rich, AAA-grade, western red cedar top, and East Indian rosewood back and sides that contribute to its focused, full-bodied tone. Plug in and you'll hear rich, full articulation from its LR Baggs VTC active pickup and preamp system. What’s more, through innovations in bracing, this CYM75CE Yairi Classical features a hand-carved fan bracing system that compliments its classical, cutaway body shape with prodigious projection. Other aspects like a one-piece mahogany neck, a traditional rosewood bridge, and an easy-playing ebony fingerboard contribute to making the Alvarez CYM75CE one of the finest classical guitars offered by Sweetwater.

Outstanding tonewoods seasoned and cured for years

With a solid tonal combination of AAA-grade western red cedar and East Indian rosewood, the CYM75CE Yairi Masterworks Series Classical was built to shine for years to come. Together, these tonewoods offer lively presence and warm, bright tones delightfully combined with an easy-playing one-piece mahogany neck capped with an ebony fingerboard. What makes the tonewoods in this Alvarez stand out? Before they even make it into their final classical acoustic shape, they undergo a seasoning process that can take years to decades until they finally offer an Alvarez guitar outstanding tonal properties and playability.

Serious attention to detail

While the stellar tonewoods are show-stoppers themselves, the Alvarez CYM75CE boasts a range of other appointments and construction attributes that combine to make its tonewoods truly shine. For instance, the CYM75CE’s mahogany neck, with its Spanish heel joint, found its shape through spoke shaving done by hand to ensure maximum comfort while fretting in any position. Meanwhile, stunning inlays, real bone nut and saddle, and Gotoh gold tuners polish this acoustic off with exceptional appointments that’ll make it your next family heirloom.

The Alvarez-Yairi system

Comprised of 24 luthiers, four of them holding master luthier status, the Yairi luthier workshop in Kani, Japan handcrafts guitars with artisanal dedication to their craft. These bench-made guitars find their distinguished voices through the hands of skilled luthiers – some of them boasting as much as 55 years experience in the industry. That means when you hold an Alvarez-Yairi guitar in your hands, you’re holding a piece of art that received immense skill and precise concentration from start to finish. Yairi earmarks like their fan bracing system, thin finishes, and Direct Coupled Bridge set these guitars apart from others in the industry — after all, it’s no surprise with 85 years of experience building concert classical guitars.

Nuanced sound from LR Baggs electronics

When you’ve got a showstopping guitar, you need a pickup system to match. Luckily, the CYM75CE is outfitted with LR Baggs’ Element active pickup system meaning the superb tones of your guitar will find warm, articulate sound whenever you need to plug in. The pickup itself delivers nuanced sound capture through its flexible film sensor, capturing the movement of the soundboard rather than just that of the strings. Also, the Stage Pro VTC preamp adds a chromatic tuner; EQ control; and a master volume. It all adds up to providing you with discrete, soundhole-mounted electronics that can be easily adjusted for any performance or recording session.

Alvarez CYM75CE Yairi Masterworks Series Classical Acoustic-electric Guitar Features:

  • Handcrafted by industry professionals and master luthiers in Kani, Japan
  • AAA-grade, western red cedar top contributes sweet harmonics and focused sound
  • East Indian rosewood back and sides offer a powerful tonal foundation and provides warmth and brightness with the cedar
  • Easy-playing ebony fingerboard
  • Cutaway body makes reaching higher frets easier
  • Mahogany neck with Spanish heel neck joint delivers comfortable fretting
  • LR Baggs pickup and preamp system offers volume and EQ controls for rich, articulated sound
  • Traditional rosewood bridge transfers more vibration from the strings to the top of the guitar
  • Tonewoods seasoned and cured for years, ensuring exceptional tone and construction
  • Fan bracing system strengthens guitar top and adds projection and enhanced tone
  • Made to be passed on generation after generation
  • Thin finish shows off the elegance of the tonewoods

A Wonderful Classical Guitar

Before pulling the trigger on this expensive guitar, I did a fair amount of research. I researched Alvarez, but in particular, the Yairi shop, luthiers, and methods. I also watched some YouTube videos. (Who doesn't these days?) I watched one guy doing finger style, and it sounded terrible. I watched a classical player, and it sounded amazing.

I received this guitar, left it in the box for a day, then took it out. The tuning settled in within about 60 minutes which was pleasantly surprising. A few of the fret ends slightly snagged my microfiber cloth but didn't actually tear. Otherwise, fit and finish are on par for this price point.

This guitar resonates unlike any other guitar I've owned. I tried a couple of different styles. Regular finger style sounds better on my Martins. However, when playing classical, this thing absolutely sings. It pushes me to use my best technique to achieve a most beautiful sound.
Music background: My background: self-taught in the 80s; briefly studied under a professor from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Styles: Rock, Blues, Folk, Classical.
