Three Boost/Preamp Voices Inspired by BOSS Analog Royalty

The BP-1W is an immensely versatile boost/preamp pedal, sporting a trio of voices pulled from legendary BOSS and Roland classics. The key to this pedal’s versatile tone is a 3-position switch located front and center on the top panel, delivering three distinct flavors of boost and preamp tones straight out of BOSS’ vintage legacy. From the clear and chimey preamp tone of a vintage BOSS CE-1 to the darker, vibe-filled richness of the Roland RE-201’s preamp section, the BP-1W captures some of the coveted sounds in the BOSS catalog. For additional versatility, the BP-1W also boasts a NAT mode that functions as an ultra-clean boost to bolster your tone without adding any color. You also get selectable Standard/Vintage input buffer modes with drastically different tonal responses. Much more than a simple boost pedal, the BP-1W is a veritable history lesson in the art of BOSS analog architecture.

Two old-school preamps and a squeaky-clean boost

At first glance, the BOSS BP-1W’s 2-knob setup looks strikingly similar to any other boost pedal. However, the feature that truly sets the BP-1W apart from the pack is its unique trio of boost/preamp voices, borrowed from some of the iconic Roland and BOSS analog circuits in music history.

  • RE: Hailing from the classic Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the RE voice delivers a gritty, vintage-style warmth that’s superb for slamming into the front of your favorite tube amp.
  • CE: This voice stems from the first mass-produced chorus pedal: The BOSS CE-1 Chorus Ensemble. Compared to RE, CE sports a cleaner and brighter response with a bell-like character to its upper frequencies.
  • NAT: Finally, NAT is a supremely versatile and ultra-clean boost. This setting is ideal for guitarists looking to drive their amp or beef up their pickups without altering the sound of their base tone.

Waza Craft: a higher art of stompbox design

The Japanese word "waza" means art and technique, an appropriate name for BOSS's premium line of redesigned guitar effects pedals. You see, the pedal collectors here at Sweetwater have seen more than enough special-edition stompboxes that are only a paint job away from the originals, which is why we're so blown away by what BOSS has done with the Waza Craft series. Even in their Standard modes, Waza Craft pedals sound like idealized versions of the originals, offering the same sonic character that made them iconic, but with less noise and more consistent tone. And when you A/B the standard and custom modes, the contrast is nothing short of astonishing.

BOSS BP-1W Boost/Preamp Pedal Features:

  • Ultra-versatile 3-voice analog boost/preamp pedal
  • RE and CE voices capture the legendary preamp tones of the vintage Roland RE-201 and BOSS CE-1 units
  • NAT voice serves as an ultra-clean modern boost to beef up your tone without adding any color
  • Remarkably simple 2-knob operation with Gain and Level controls
  • Adjustable Standard/Vintage buffer modes dramatically change the pedal’s overall tonal response
  • Classic tank-like BOSS metal enclosure

Not Just A Boost

I'm using this, set to NAT, in front of a TS808 into an analog delay into a Princeton Reverb, and I like that sound. However, turning off the TS808, the BP-1W works as a capable, low gain drive pedal without the mid-hump from the TS. The three settings should work for many kinds of rhythm work. Add some hair and dime your guitar's controls and it's good enough for some lead work. The other 2 settings add more useful voicings. Overall, it doesn't give mountains of boost but what it gives is subtle, warm and tasteful. The pedal looks well made, evokes quality & durability and gives great guitar tones. Likely a keeper.

Amazing

This pedal is almost perfect. If it were stereo, it would be flawless. It sounds good with every single instrument I have. Synths, guitars, basses, drum machines. Everything. It works great with other pedals. It works great with solid state amps, tube amps, and DI. It is a clean boost and it is a beautiful overdrive. It sounds good on vocals. It is smooth and it gets mean. I routinely pair it with the Waza Blues Driver, which is a fantastic combo. Also works great in front of the CE-2W chorus. Can't say enough good things about this pedal. I'll probably buy a second.

Just get one already!

A very versatile pedal and well worth the $.
Can add just the perfect little extra sauce on your sound, or give a commanding push at the front of your amp.

This thing is great.

Just fattens everything up in a good way. Each mode is distinct, and all great, just depends on context and what you're looking for. Not a bad mode on it though. Natural has the least character of course, CE fattens a little more and retains all clarity. RE warms the most and just sounds soooo smooth with high gain stuff. I primarily use this AFTER my Boss OD-200. It just kind of warms things up and gets rid of that extra digi sizzle I sometimes get from the OD-200. Very cool pedal by Boss. Sometimes I feel it could be improved with a tone control, but it honestly just adds nice vintage warmth and fatness to whatever you feed in to it, which is the whole point of it. Very pleased with this!

My new favorite

I tried a lot of boosts, boss bosster feedbacker, Tumnus, MXR, soul food and this is the ONE! 3 modes that all sound good.
Natural sounds best to me through my Marshall JCM 900 on both the cleanish and dirty channels, on a humbucker guitar. Lots of pedals only work with one type of pick up and one type of amp. This works for my rig. I found my sweet spot.
