Vintage Tones from the '50s and '60s

If you're looking for a set of strings that captures the trailblazing tones of the 1950s and 1960s, then look no further than D'Addario XL Pure Nickel electric guitar strings from Sweetwater. XL Pure Nickels feature a wrap wire of pure nickel roundwound over a hex core. This construction yields a tone that recalls the blues, rock, surf, and country music of the mid-20th century — an era when pure nickel-wound strings were by far the norm — while maintaining the durability and intonation modern D'Addario strings are known for. Compared to nickel-wound steel guitar strings, D'Addario XL Pure Nickel strings have a decidedly smoother — plus a purer and warmer — response. They're perfect for cooling down hot-wound humbuckers and taking some poke out of a vintage single-coil. But that's not to say these strings can't cut. At Sweetwater, we've channeled these strings for everything from icy-cool cleans to smooth, Pink Floyd-esque saturated leads. And, quite unlike true vintage strings, D'Addario XL Pure Nickel guitar strings feature a digitally controlled winding process that yields perfect consistency from set to set.

D'Addario XL Pure Nickel Electric Guitar Strings (Jazz Light) Features:

  • Gauges: .012, .016, .023W, .031, .041, .051
  • Pure nickel wrap wire conjures blues, rock, surf, and country tones of the '50s and '60s
  • Yields a warmer, smoother response compared to nickel-plated steel
  • Precision hex core delivers superior intonation and stability
  • Digitally controlled winding machines ensure consistency from set to set

Great lightweight jazz strings

To a lot of guitarists, a string set with an .012 first sounds as heavy as a cement truck. In the jazz world, these are on the light side. And they turned out to be just right for my Heritage 535. The pure nickel makeup of these strings helps to dial back the brashness of the instrument while still giving me a tonal world that's a little different from my pure archtop. They're heavy enough to allow secure in-tune comping, but light enough that you can throw in the occasional bend without slicing your fingers up the middle. Tone is balanced across the range and the strings have a pretty decent lifespan. I've tried several strings on this guitar and these suit my needs the best.
Music background: Decades on guitar.
