Running 32 plus cables from a stage box to a mixer that’s 50 feet away is a real drag. But, don’t fret, that’s why snakes were invented! So, what’s a snake? Simply put, an audio snake is a group of cables that are permanently bundled together in a tube or some other type of binding. A snake is tailor-made for situations where you need to route a bunch of audio signals from one location to another. Rather than running a bunch of separate cables (which would result in a serious mess) you can run a single snake. Not only does this save you time and probably a serious migraine, it’s often cheaper than buying individual cables.


XLR to TRS Cable


An XLR to TRS snake is balanced, in that it possesses positive and negative legs, plus an independent ground. This design reduces noise, especially when used in long cable runs. This type of audio snake has XLR connectors on one end and TRS (also called 1/4-inch) connectors on the other end. As you would expect, an audio snake with XLR and TRS connectors is designed to send and/or receive multiple channels of audio to and from audio equipment that boasts TRS and XLR connectors. An XLR to 1/4-inch snake works well in situations where you want to run multiple audio sources from stage to front of house, so the signals can be mixed and amplified through a PA system. TRS to XLR snakes are also used in the studio to connect multiple inputs and outputs to and from an analog console and an old-school multitrack tape machine.
