3M Cable: Snap Crackle Pop @192KHz, RME RayDAT workaround

The cable seems decent enough. I don't really expect it to be the same grade as cables costing 3-4X more.

I purchased this cable to connect the Coax SPDIF output of my RME RayDAT to the SPDIF input of the Grace Design M900 headphone DAC/amp I also purchased, to provide "direct" headphone monitoring of the RayDAT's mixed output.

Your mileage may vary, but on my rig with a brand new one of these Hosa DRA503 (3 Meter) cables I experienced a noticeable amount of "snap crackle pop" through the headphones when running the SPDIF output at 192KHz sample rate.

noticeable = sporadic but at a minimum of every 3-5 seconds, some kind of click, pop, etc. Some are loud, some are faint. Almost like listening to a not-well-cared-for LP. This occured whether there was a source playing through the M900 or not, and experimentation with all ASIO buffer sample sizes between 128 and 4096 made no difference.

In fairness and based on feedback from RME, this may actually have some or more to do with simply trying to run 192KHz over a 10 foot cable. The first advice I got was to try a shorter cable or a different one since 192KHz over coax or even optical is right on the edge of what is possible. So more expensive cables might have the same issue. I do not know as this is all new territory to me.

WORKAROUND FOR RME RAYDAT
In my case, there was a checkbox in the SPDIF Output section of the RME RayDAT's control panel applet (driver version 4.2.1) to enable Professional level output. Turning the Professional checkbox ON has essentially eliminated this noise.

Feedback from RME's forum admin reinforces that this checkbox enables a full AES level output and professional format.

I can't really point a finger at this cable and say the trouble I had would not have happened with one of the $30-$45 cables -- it may well have - but I am glad I found a workaround and I hope this helps someone.
