Essential Audio Tools: Be Prepared for Anything

For all the raucous energy of a live show, the whole production is fragile. It’s one thing when the musicians are in sync and their equipment is firing on all cylinders. Throw in a bad cable, a snapped string, or a buzzing amp, and things can fall apart quickly. Onstage or in the studio, audio equipment is sensitive, and routine upkeep matters. Sweetwater carries the live sound accessories that keep a rig working, from gaffer tape and cable testers to patchbays and power conditioners. With your gear in check, you can get back to making music and putting on a great show.

About Live Sound Accessories and Use Cases

Live sound accessories are the supporting gear that keeps a rig running once the show starts. The sections below sort the category by the job each piece does and point toward the pages that go deeper. If you’re putting a rig together from scratch, our full live sound lineup is a good place to start.

Power & Signal

Sweetwater carries a range of direct boxes, which convert an unbalanced, high impedance 1/4" signal into a balanced, low impedance XLR signal. These inexpensive, portable boxes are a common part of a touring rig, and one with a ground-lift switch can often reduce hum caused by a ground loop.

On a larger scale, patchbays help organize and streamline multiple audio signals. Bring condenser mics to a gig where the mixer doesn’t supply phantom power, and a standalone phantom power supply can give those mics the voltage they need. Power conditioners, power strips, and extension cords help filter electrical noise and protect gear from voltage spikes, and everything that runs between them lives with our cables and snakes.

Transport & Protection

Road life is hard on gear. Utility cases and gig bags help protect sensitive equipment from impact damage in the van, and a pushcart can speed up load-in and reduce the strain of moving heavy racks. Rack hardware and shockmount road cases sit with our racks and cases, while stands and general-purpose cases live with the rest of our other accessories.

Gig Essentials

Take something as basic as tape. A serious onstage setup means lots of cords and wires, which means lots of chances to trip over them or unplug them. You could use duct tape to secure them, but duct tape tends to leave a sticky residue. Many engineers reach for gaffer tape instead, a cloth-weave tape that typically comes off without damage or residue. Test before you play, too: a cable tester can identify dead XLR, DMX, and RCA cables in seconds. We also stock batteries, headlamps, polarity testers, and hearing protection, which is worth keeping in your bag, since repeated exposure to high stage volume can cause cumulative hearing damage.

Need Help Choosing Live Sound Accessories?

When it comes to professional sound, small details add up, and the right accessory depends on the instruments, the console, and the venues you play. If you’re troubleshooting a hum, sizing a power conditioner for your rack, or figuring out which direct box suits your instrument, give us a call, and one of our Sales Engineers can help.
