The Sweetwater Difference

Why Choose Sweetwater?

At Sweetwater, we have one single goal in mind — to make you a satisfied customer. That single focus is our shared commitment and promise to you, and it drives everything we do at Sweetwater. We’re here to help you live your music dreams by giving you more than any other retailer.

How VST Plugins Revolutionized Music Production

It’s hard to overstate just how much VSTs have changed the landscape of music and audio production. What once required racks of pricey, bulky outboard gear can now be done with a laptop and a few carefully chosen plug-ins.

Take compressors. A single plug-in can now give you the character and control of multiple hardware units, and you’re free to load up as many instances as your CPU can handle. And it’s not just compressors, either. EQs, reverbs, delays, pitch tools, mastering suites — just about every type of signal processor now has a digital counterpart, often with added flexibility and instant recall.

Thinking of diving into the exciting realm of audio plug-ins? Even if your workflow includes some level of analog summing or hardware sweetening, chances are you’re still relying on VSTs for the lion’s share of your processing. Here’s what you’ll need to start building your sonic tool kit.

New to VSTs? Let’s Break It Down

What is a VST plugin, and how does it work?

Think of a VST plug-in as a virtual piece of studio gear — be it a synth, a reverb, or a compressor — that runs inside your DAW or host application. Developed by Steinberg, the VST (Virtual Studio Technology) protocol has allowed countless software makers to get their virtual effects processors and instruments into the hands of leading artists and producers.

There are two main types: VST effects, which process your sound (like EQs and delays), and VST instruments (VSTis), which create sound through MIDI control (as a virtual piano or drum library). Once installed, VSTs show up right in your DAW, letting you load them just like adding a new effect or instrument to your track.

Do VSTs work with any DAW? Which DAWs support VST plugins?

Most major cross-platform DAWs support VSTs, but not all of them. Major DAWs that support VSTs include Studio One, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Cubase/Nuendo, and Reaper. DAWs that don’t natively support VSTs include Pro Tools (uses AAX format) and Logic Pro (requires AU format).

Though workarounds like plug-in wrappers do exist for certain situations, native VST support is always preferred for stability and ease of use.

What’s the difference between a VST and a plugin?

Great question. “Plug-in” is a general term for any add-on software that extends the functionality of a DAW or host application. VST is a specific plug-in format, developed by Steinberg and widely adopted across most popular music production software. Many producers casually use “VST” to describe all plug-ins, but technically speaking, VST is just one format. Others include AU (used by Logic Pro) and AAX (used by Pro Tools).
