What is a VST plugin, and how does it work?

Think of a VST plug-in as a virtual piece of studio gear — be it a synth, a reverb, or a compressor — that runs inside your DAW or host application. Developed by Steinberg, the VST (Virtual Studio Technology) protocol has allowed countless software makers to get their virtual effects processors and instruments into the hands of leading artists and producers.

There are two main types: VST effects, which process your sound (like EQs and delays), and VST instruments (VSTis), which create sound through MIDI control (as a virtual piano or drum library).
