Pocket-sized recording interface that's ready to travel

Few audio interfaces compare to Zoom's U-24 when it comes to sheer portability. With the U-24, USB bus power is only the beginning. For one thing, it can run on a pair of AA batteries when bus power isn't available, making it an excellent audio interface to keep with your iPad (Camera Connection Kit required). And since the U-24 is so compact, you can comfortably carry it in your jacket pocket and be ready to record whenever and wherever inspiration strikes.

All the connections you need, plus Zoom Capsule input

Despite its diminutive size, the U-24 includes the essential analog I/O you need. A pair of TRL/XLR combo jacks serve as your main inputs, accommodating line-level sources and microphones - even supplying phantom power to condenser mics. What's more, there's a DI input, so you can plug in your guitar. Stereo RCA connections accommodate DJ setups, and MIDI I/O is great for keyboards and controllers.

Loaded with Zoom's top-quality preamps and conversion

For years, Zoom has been a leader in the world of portable preamps and digital conversion, with products such as the H4N, F8, and H6 breaking new ground in affordable mobile recording quality. Onboard the U-24, you'll find the same ones from the H6 that Sweetwater customers and field recording pros love, so you know you'll get clean and clear sound. Likewise, a set of 24-bit/96kHz onboard converters delivers reliable digital audio, making it easy to record studio-ready tracks out in the field.

Zoom U-24 Handy Audio Interface Features:
  • 2-channel USB recording interface for Mac, Windows, and iPad (via Camera Connection Kit)
  • 2 XLR/TRS combo inputs include the microphone preamps from the H6 (with phantom power)
  • DI input lets you plug in your guitar or bass and record direct
  • Record and play back high-quality audio at up to 24-bit/96kHz resolution
  • 2 sets of stereo RCA outputs support DJ setups

Zoom U-24

Easy to use, and sounds perfect.
Music background: industrial - experimental - techno - ambient - noise - music - since 1984

Overall it is very good

I have been using it and tried to record in many configurations.
So what I found out is the Zoom U-24 is a very good product for the price.
It is well made and it works great. The ASIO software that came with it is the best option.
I tried using it with ASIO4ALL and the default version used with Cubase.

It has all the connections you need for recording.

I own both the IK Multimedia's iRig Pro Duo and Zoom U-24.

The Zoom U-24 is the better choice.
Music background: I have been playing guitar for about 10 years and been dabbling with DAW for about 8 years.

Perfect is Good Enough

This product does everything it states in the features description and does it well. I am using it with iOS on an iPad, and it performs smoothly with low latency and has great audio. MIDI works, it gets decent battery life, it is well-built, has a low noise floor.

Oh, and it is also about half the price of units offering similar features.

What do you do when a product performs exactly as promised? You have to shrug and give it five stars.

The best portable interface on the market.

I’ve been looking for a portable interface to use with my iPad or iPhone.

The first interface I tried was the IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo. A good interface but not worth two hundred. It has a lot of I/O’s and it can run on AA batteries. The Duo sounds good if you keep the pre amps low. If you run the pre amps to hot, there’s noticeable noise. I found the Pro Duo to be cheaply made (wouldn’t want to drop it) and the battery life wasn’t very long.

I then tried the Yamaha AG-06. This one is built like a tank. Enough I/O’s and it looks cool. This interface can run on a 5V portable battery pack (the ones you use to recharge you smart phone). When I connected the Yamaha to my external battery, I heard a high pitch whine. Yamaha suggested I look at other battery packs until I find one that didn’t make noise. I didn’t want to go through that process so I returned it.

So now I have the Zoom U-24. The feel and build quality is much better than the iRig Pro Duo, but not as good as the Yamaha. Even though it’s better than the iRig, it’s made of plastic and care should be taken.
I would say the sound quality is the same as the Yamaha. Even when pushing the pre’s, it’s quiet.
The best feature of the U-24 is the number of power options. It’s bussed powered so your desktop or laptop can provide the power. You can also use a DC 5 V wall adaptor or a 5 V portable battery. And Zoom claims you can get 4 hours when using regular AA batteries. So far all the power options work well and I’m still using the original batteries. I’m guessing I’m over two hours on the original batteries, and still going strong.

Zoom sells an optional power supply that plugs into the wall. I’m using an old phone power supply I had lying around. The output is 5V and it works fine. So if you have an old phone adaptor with the micro USB plug, you should be ok and you won’t have to buy the adaptor.

Zoom advertises the U-24 will work on a Mac, PC or an iPad. All three work and I have no problem using it on my iPhone. That’s a plus.

To recap, I wasn’t crazy about the iRig Duo. The Yamaha is built like a tank, but I had problems using and external batter. The Zoom U-24 is built well and it has a great feel. The knobs are easy to use and everything is laid out nicely. The pre-amps are quiet and It has enough I/0’s for my needs. The Zoom also has the most power options of any unit I’ve seen. And they all work.

The Zoom U-24 is a keeper.
