Abbey Road's Holy-grail Preamp

The Chandler Limited REDD.47 mic preamp re-creates the original tube line amps used in Abbey Road Studios' rare, custom EMI REDD.51 recording consoles. This is the unmistakably punchy, agressive sound that characterized recordings made in Studio Two between 1964 and 1968 - including legendary tracks by The Beatles. Modern features have been added to meet contemporary recording studio standards, such as increased gain that gives you a range of new tonal options, from pristine cleans to rich, classic saturation. Take it from Sweetwater, with its inimitable sonic moxie, the Chandler Limited REDD.47 will work wonders in your studio.

The workhorse line amp of the REDD.51

A critical component of the EMI REDD.51 console (REDD being an acronym for Abbey Road Studios' in-house Record Engineering Development Department), the REDD.47 line amplifier was used in virtually every stage of the audio path, including the mic and line inputs, the echo sends, and the monitors. With its spunky, in-your-face sonics, the REDD.47 lent its unique character to all the music - including every Beatles track - recorded in Abbey Road Studio Two during its mid-'60s tour of duty.

Enjoy an expanded range of tonal options

Chandler Limited's REDD.47 preamp gives you added benefits never offered by the original design, including an increased gain range that greatly expands your tonal options. Imagine being able to dial between immaculate cleans and classic tube saturation with up to 2 percent harmonic distortion before clipping! Think of the gnarly, distorted guitars in The Beatles' "Revolution." They were DI'd straight into the board; all that seething mad-dog bite is the REDD.47. And speaking of direct injection, Chandler Limited has thoughtfully included a DI input on the REDD.47 front panel.

Chandler Limited REDD.47 Mic Preamp Features:

  • Delivers the legendary sound of Abbey Road Studios' "holy-grail" preamp
  • Modern features to meet contemporary recording studio standards

Good stuff

Landed this preamp about a month ago and immediately recorded a demo with everything put through it.
A couple notes:
-Very easy to mix right away with the level of quality this box has.
-The bass and vocals sounded especially good through it.
-Tons of extra gain
-DI instruments sound great
-"in the room" feeling of audio reproduction

It flatters everything you put through it. There's a warmth and also a crispness to it. My only gripe is the price point. That being said you definitely get what you pay for in this instance.

Fantastic for when it's what you need

Giving it 5 stars because when you pair this with the right source and mic, it's pretty magical. That being said, it's not my preamp of choice. But again, when it's the right choice, it's fantastic. Lots of personality.

The stuff of legends....

This is the greatest microphone preamp I've ever heard. Do yourself a favor and just get it. Get two. Get eight. Just make sure to get a loan.
This is one of those "desert island" pre's... but for more reasons than I have time to explain. I could spend hours just talking about how these sound on drums.. let alone what they do to a full mix..

They are somewhat magical. I do not fully understand how they sound so good on literally everything, but the price tag is high; u clearly get your moneys worth! They are like a saturator, compressor, de-esser, and channel strip all in one.... and thats just with a couple gain knobs! Its crazy how much of a chameleon this thing is, considering how good it sounds on vocals, for example. You would think its tailored to vocal recording... but then you plug in the next thing and find it seems dialed in to THAT... its just that good. Seriously its cut my overdubbing time in half.
Get a couple of these, get some 1073's (they pair together very nicely), and start makin music!! I know i certainly don't have any more excuses now that I have a bit of magic on the front end of my rig!

Look, you know its a good preamp when I'm plotting how long it'll take before I can afford another pair... they're absolutely amazing.

Valve Voodoo

The best preamp I've ever used.Actually the TG2 is a tie.Ten out of ten.The Redd.47 makes for a ride on cloud nine. Thanks to Wade Goeke and crew.EMI/Abbey Road and it is spot on Beatles groove.I'm going to give this away:using 2,3 Redd.47's or 1 if that's all you have n your guitar will take you to Revolution. It is eerie. And I was pleasantly surprised the TG2 500 does exactly what the TG2 rack does.Back to Redd.47.If you want to have the tools that helped make the band who changed rock music forever then sort out your sound w Chandler EMI Abbey Roads. If Wade hadn't brought these pieces of The Beatles' desk with approval for EMI n Abbey Road well I'm just so thankful he did.Cheers

That Old School Sound.

I was torn between a Tree Audio Branch and this guy and decided to get this. I'm glad I got this instead! This preamp is gorgeous on vocals! The tube sound is killer. The Voltage Gain, Fine Gain, and Rumble Filter have very usable settings and all are stepped and recallable. I got a second for in the box audio processing and it's perfect for warming in the box vocals, virtual instruments, anything that could use that old school Abbey Road sound. It's a great contrast to the newer sounding preamps I have in my studio!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

AJ Becerra

If there's one mic pre out there that I could use on any source, with any mic, any genere of music, it's the Chandler REDD.47. I can run anything through it and it sounds like a finished mix!

Stuart Niven

Hearing the heft, girth, and silk that the REDD.47 imparted when tracking a bass guitar through it was was mind blowing. All other preamps fade away - this one is a must-have.

Joe Holsclaw

I've had the privilege of working with a number of choice mic preamps, and I've found that I generally lean towards the vintage solid state designs. That being said, the tube-driven REDD.47 has become my absolute favorite preamp for vocals. It sounds full, elegant, and punchy, and it rolls off sibilance in a very pleasing and natural way that's better than any preamp I've worked with. Chandler has hit a home run.

Carson McClain

The Chandler REDD.47 preamp is a licensed re-creation of the pre out of Abbey Road's Redd 51 Console. The first time I heard a drum kit recorded through it, it sounded like the drums had been compressed, EQed, mixed, and mastered! If I had to choose a "desert island" preamp, this would be a top contender.
