Brian May’s Stadium-sized Sound in a Highly Portable Head

In Brian May’s own words, the Vox MV50BM is designed to provide players with a means to achieve “the sounds you make in a stadium show in your living room.” One strum through this hybrid amp head is all the proof you need that his collaboration with Vox has paid off in spades! The MV50BM amplifier head harnesses the power of Vox’s renowned MV circuitry to emulate the tone of a roaring AC30 — Brian’s preferred amp for decades — boasting 50 watts of power and a true tube preamp for natural, organic overdrive. Any devotee of Brian’s playing is well aware that a treble booster is a non-negotiable element of his iconic tone; the Vox VM50BM comes equipped with a togglable Knight Audio Technologies treble booster circuit to instantly unlock the instantly recognizable, vocal-like lead tone that’s graced just about every solo in the Queen catalog. Finally, if your volume restrictions run a bit shy of a stadium, the MV50BM sports a cab sim-enabled headphone/line-out for near-silent practice and recording.

An immaculate emulation of the legendary Vox AC30

To provide you with the most authentic tube-style AC30 tones possible, the Vox Brian May MV50BM starts with the same cutting-edge circuitry as the rest of Vox’s highly renowned MV50 series. Whether you’re after clean tones packed with jangle and chime or the raw, roaring tone of a cranked AC30, the MV50BM has you covered. Plus, Sweetwater guitarists love how the non-nonsense 3-knob control scheme of a Gain, Tone, and Volume knob makes it a breeze to dial in your favorite Queen riffs, licks, and solos.

Onboard KAT Treble Booster

For decades, Brian May’s signature tone has been consistently defined by three elements: his Red Special Guitar, his wall of Vox AC30 amplifiers, and a treble booster. While it’s unlikely that Brian is willing to give up his self-made Red Special guitar anytime soon, the MV50BM’s dead-on AC30-style tone is paired with a togglable treble booster circuit developed by Knight Audio Technologies — the very same company that builds many of the treble boosters that Brian plays up onstage.

Innovative Nutube technology

Don’t be fooled by the MV50BM’s portable size — this little hybrid head houses a true tube in its preamp section. It’s an old-school-meets-new-school touch that allows the MV50BM to break up with the best of them, only without the challenges (and heavy weight!) that are so common among all-tube designs. If you’re after highly dynamic, organic-sounding overdrive tones, the MV50BM will surely please even the pickiest tube fanatic.

It sounds almost exactly like you think it will

Sure, you could get the big (heavy!) 2x12 Vox Brian May combo, but for $ and coming in at 1.2 pounds, you're far better off with the MV50BM, a "hybrid" (aka solid state) amp with "nutube" technology. (It's not really a tube, even though Vox says it is.)

With the right guitar, it's pretty easy to get close to Brian May's sound, but that's not really the amp's strength if you ask me. What you get is controllable rock tone; the interplay between the gain and volume controls is fantastic, and while the amp itself is a little bright, it's mostly tameable with the tone control.

The amp's only real weakness is the treble boost circuit - essential to nail Brian May's tone, but it is SO. FRIGGIN. NOISY!! Like WOW THAT'S NOISY noisy. With the treble boost off, the amp is normal noisy for something with a gain knob. From my perspective, the treble booster renders the amp useless without a noise gate, and you'd better have a GOOD noise gate to boot. Having said that, you don't need the treble booster to get great tone out of this powerhouse of a little amp.

Buy it. Love it. Trust me.

A lot of amp with classic tone

Sir Brian doesn't go halfway on anything and his partnership with Vox in developing this amp is no different. Whether pushing it through a 1x8, 1x12 or headphones, this amp has the tone you'd expect of a Vox with a treble boost to further unleash your inner guitar god. For portability and tone this is a tough one to beat. Note: the pic includes the 1x8 matching speaker.

Love this. Got a second BC108 to go with it and POW! Stadium sound to boot. Highly recommend, and as always thanks to Mike Wrighr for his continued excellent service.

Sounds like Queen! Loud! It’s a REAL tube!

This little beast nails the Queen tone. And yes, Nutube technology is an actual vacuum tube circuit. You really notice the Nutube genuine tube sound versus a solid state transistor when you play harmonics. Nutubes have an anode and cathode and filament and everything else…. All of these elements are built in miniature and encased in what looks like a computer chip; but it's not a computer chip. It's full analog and responds just like a vacuum tube because it is a vacuum tube; just not in a glass bottle. It will last far longer than what we think of as a traditional vacuum tube because Nutube uses far less electricity. Remember, traditional vacuum tubes are 100 year old technology crammed inside a fragile glass bottle. I've wanted someone to use modern manufacturing techniques to redesign the very basic workings of the humble vacuum tube for years and now we finally have Nutube. The price can't be beat for real tube tone. And this thing is LOUD! Put a mic in front of it and you could play a stadium.

Sounds great through headphones

I bought this in hopes that it would be a good headphone amp for quiet practice. It sounds great. I tried a Simplifier and a Mooer headphone amp in the past and was not happy with the crackles in my headphones and the thin sound, this unit is a great improvement and I love it. I also like the limited number of controls. You can dial in a good clean sound easily and quickly.
