This Dreadnought Delivers Hotrod Electric Tone!

Anyone who regularly plays acoustic rock, blues, country, or even jazz will get a real kick out of the Gretsch G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought acoustic-electric guitar. Part of Gretsch's Roots series, this instrument gives you the timeless acoustic sound of a mahogany dreadnought bolstered by the electrified punch of an iso-chamber-mounted Fideli'Tron pickup. As a result, you'll get both warm acoustic shine and electric-guitar punch from the G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought, making it a perfect choice for live playing and studio work as well. Deluxe tuners, gold-plated hardware, and beautiful binding and inlays as well all add up to make the G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought one mighty fine acoustic.

Unique acoustic-electric tone from the Fideli'Tron humbucking pickup

Normally found on hot-rod electric guitars, the Fideli'Tron humbucker on the Gretsch G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought Rancher gives you a wide tonal range and aggressive output. It can sound sweet and clean at lower volume levels, but it's ready to get nice and dirty when you turn your volume knob up and hit your amp harder. For an exceptionally rich sound when recording, try treating the pickup signal to an amplifier or amp modeling plug-in, and blend that signal in with the mic'd acoustic sound.

Premium tonewoods and craftsmanship deliver sweet sound and sustain

Sweetwater customers often ask their Sales Engineers why two guitars with the same tonewoods sound nothing alike, and the answer often comes down to the construction. In the case of the G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought, Gretsch reinforced the solid spruce top with scalloped X bracing, a premium touch that enhances the projection and tonal balance while minimizing the vibration dampening of the G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought's solid spruce top, providing you with singing sustain. And the rosewood bridge features compensated saddles, for optimum intonation and tuning performance. With extra care like this, you can tell that the G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought was made to be played for a lifetime.

Take home a remarkable piece of Gretsch guitar history

While most of the Gretsch guitars you see at Sweetwater are hollowbody electric guitars, Gretsch has been producing top-notch acoustic guitars longer than most of us have been alive. The G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought Rancher pays homage to the distinctive Rancher guitars from the early '50s, retaining their iconic triangular soundhole and priced so that anyone can enjoy this piece of Gretsch's history. Whether you're a performing artist or just want a great vacation guitar, you'll love the classic vibe you get from the Gretsch G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought Rancher.

Gretsch G5031FT Rancher Dreadnought Acoustic-electric Guitar Features:

  • Unique dreadnought acoustic-electric guitar, based on classic Rancher guitars from the '50s
  • Tap into a wide range of articulate plugged-in tone with the Fideli'Tron humbucking pickup
  • Unique pickguard and triangular soundhole creates a classic eye-catching look
  • Scalloped X-bracing and arched spruce top enhances projection and tonal balance
  • Compensated saddles help optimize intonation and tuning performance

Forgot to Mention

In addition to all the brilliant features, I forgot to mention the fretmarkers. The semi circle fret markers are a really nice touch, that are actually far better placed and easier to see than the traditional dots or other designs in the center of the fret.

I have been playing this guitar nearly constantly since I received it and can say without reservation, this is a Great guitar, the more I play it, the more I love it. Beautifully engineered, designed and quality manufacture.

Great Guitar

I had never before even remotely considered Gretsch guitars, but after watching a video of Justin Johnson, the great Blues Master, I bought this guitar on his reccommendation because he is a great musician who knows what he is talking about.

I received my new Gretsch Rancher a few days ago and my first impressions were that it is a beautiful, well made guitar with a flawless fit and finish, basically what I expected, another winner.

As I have come to expect from Sweetwater, right out of the box the set up was flawless and required no adjustments and it arrived very close, maybe ½ step down from being in tune. The action is low, extremely playable with no fret buzz and the string articulation is superb.

The neck is beautiful and my only minor issue is that while the scale is 25 inches, it only has 16 frets, but otherwise it is such a great guitar, the number of frets is not a deal breaker.

Played acoustically the Rancher has a great tone and very good volume projection.
The Rancher shines and soars electrically and there is no feedback at low to mid volumes as the result of the bracing which was purposefully engineered to minimize feed back. The finish is high gloss polyester finish looks great but Gretsch should have used a thinner coat or used nitrocellulose for the face, improving the tone and volume slightly but perceptibly.

I changed the strings, which were nickel-steel round wounds (11's) with acoustic brass wound 13's and changed the bridge piece with a brass one I had kicking around from another project. Since the brass bridge piece was a little short, I cut a popsicle stick to use as a spacer, so there is no fret buzzing. I am going to buy a brass nut and bridge pins from Amazon and may change the strings with either round wound brass 11's or 12's.

Changing the strings and bridge piece definitely made an appreciable difference unamplified and although the 13's are a bit heavy, I am able to shred on the guitar which is also superb fo finger-picking.

That said, the FidelTtron humbucker sis one of the best sounding pickups I have ever heard and has a tonal quality different from all my other Humbuckers: warm, round and immersive. Both acoustivally and electrically, the bass is clear and defined and the trebble eliminates all anoying ice-pick frequencies while the mids are near perfection.

I am really impressed that the guitar's bracing was so well designed, there is absolutely no feedback at mid volume. I bought a rubber sound hole cover/feedback eliminator from eBay, but at volumes that are loud enough to get full tonal range and ambiance but low enough to be respectful of my neighbors, the sound hole cover is unnecessary. While the bracing may lower the volume slightly when played acoustically, the fact is without being plugged in the tone is superb and the bracing only slightly diminishes the volume.

There is only one volume control, but no tone control, which is fine by me because the guitar sounds great and I can adjust the tone with the graphic EQ on my pedal board if need be.

Another interesting feature of this instrument are the unusual strap pins. There are 2 threaded inserts installed in the body of the guitar and the strap pins are a barrel shaped knob with a threaded screw. This is actually a brilliant design that makes me wonder why more manufacturers don't use it because these strap pins eliminate the need for strap locks and makes removing and replacing straps far easier. If the end of the strap gets stretched after years of use, a washer will solve that problem.

After playing for a few hours, I tuned the Rancher to an open E to play some slide and it is so sweet sounding I am completely smitten with this guitar. After a few days of playing this guitar, deep like has blossomed into TRUE LOVE. The Gretch Rancher is a welcome addition to my widely varied collection, further proof from Gretsch, you don't have to spend a fortune to get a world-class guitar.

Follow Up

They should Rename this guitar the Crack Rancher because it is so addictive that once you begin playing it is hard to stop. My only hope is that the Cordoba Stage I ordered which should be arriving in November will help wean me off the Rancher.

Gretch Rancher Review

I had never before even remotely considered Gretsch guitars, but after watching a video of Justin Johnson, the great Blues Master, I bought this guitar on his recommendation because he is a great musician who is highly intelligent, articulate and knows what he is talking about.

I received my new Gretsch Rancher a few days ago and my first impressions were that it is a beautiful, well made guitar with a flawless fit and finish, basically what I expected, another winner.

Changing the strings and bridge piece definitely made an appreciable difference unamplified and although the 13's are a bit heavy, I am able to shred on the guitar despite nearly cutting off the tip of my middle finger a couple days ago when cutting vegetables. This is the reason I will never own professional chef's knives.

That said, the Gretch FidelTtron humbucker sounds fantastic and has a tonal quality different from all my other Humbuckers: warm, round and immersive. Both acoustivally and electrically, the bass is clear and defined and the trebble eliminates all anoying ice-pick frequencies while the mids are near perfection.
