Naturally Water-resistant Uke with Striking Looks and Tone

The Kala Teak concert ukulele has more in store for the globetrotting ukulelist than striking looks and impeccable tone. With its teak construction, this affordable concert uke is naturally weather resistant to boot. Whether you're busking, camping, or playing somewhere else on the go, the Kala Teak concert ukulele delivers the goods. The secret is an all-teak body comprised of a teakwood top on teakwood back and sides. This Southeast Asian hardwood is known for its water-resistant durability, varied grain, and striated pattern in different hues of brown and reds. Paired with its comfortable meranti neck and earthy nandu fingerboard — all done up in a sumptuous satin finish — the Kala Teak concert ukulele will draw you back time and again with its unforgettable feel, play, and sound. Just like Kala's premium ukuleles, the Teak concert sets you up with long-lasting, easy-playing Aquila Super Nylgut strings, a real-deal TUSQ nut and saddle, conventional open-gear tuners, and that telltale Kala lower bout strap button for upstanding performances.

Teak construction yields top-tier tone

The Kala Teak concert ukulele is brimming with value, especially in light of how well it's built. Its all-teak body produces a tone and resonance that belie its modest size, along with a resilience to climate shifts to survive life on the road. Geared open-gear tuners ensure reliable intonation. Thanks to a high-quality GraphTech TUSQ nut and saddle, you'll experience superior sustain and vibrational transfer. Add to that an eye-catching satin finish, and you've got yourself a fine acoustic instrument that you'll enjoy for years to come.

Concert ukulele size

The concert ukulele — a size up from the classic soprano — was introduced in the 1920s as an "enhanced" soprano, sporting a louder and deeper tone with more body and richness. You'll find that the Kala Teak concert uke gives you impressive warmth, clarity, and output all while remaining relatively compact, with greater playing comfort thanks to its wider fret spacing (versus the soprano) and larger tone due to the increased body size.

Kala Teak Concert Ukulele Features:

  • All-teak body yields a captivating tone and presentation
  • Naturally water resistant — perfect for players on the go
  • Meranti neck with nandu fingerboard offers great response and playability
  • Strung up with long-lasting, easy-playing Aquila Super Nylgut strings
  • GraphTech TUSQ nut and saddle offer a synthetic alternative to traditional bone
  • Lower bout strap button for hands-free convenience

A little disappointed with this one…

Right out of the box, this ukulele had extremely gritty frets and horrible fret sprout. I had to file and dress the fret ends to make it playable without feeling sharp metal grabbing at my hand. The fretboard and bridge were also extremely dry; almost to the point of the wood cracking. I had to use a few applications of fretboard oil to get the wood rehydrated because it just soaked it up as quickly as I applied it. On to the positives, the teak wood is very nice looking. The grain patterns really look great. Also, the saddle and nut were set up very well with a very comfortable action. The tone is about what you'd expect from a ukulele. It definitely has that familiar plink, and the projection is really impressive for a laminate top. I totally understand that this is a lower priced option as far as ukuleles go, but the poor fret work was real disappointing. All in all, I think Kala is close to having a great model here if they would focus more on the fret work and take a little better care of the fretboard and bridge wood. I gave it 3 stars because most people aren't going to want to mess with fixing fret sprout and polishing frets on a brand new instrument.
