High-end Semi-hollow with a Low-end Punch

Baritone and extended-range guitars are more often than not solidbody rock machines, but leave it to D'Angelico to challenge that perception with the Deluxe SS Baritone. Built with a 26.75 medium-range scale length, the Deluxe SS baritone is an easy adjustment for the standard guitar player who is looking to dip their toes into the world of low-end rumble. This archtop boasts a laminate mahogany body and top, a deviation from the standard archtop's maple that gives it a warm tone to accentuate the lower B-B register. The neck is a "C" shape 3-piece maple/walnut/maple with a wonderfully smooth ebony fingerboard and a versatile 16-inch radius. D'Angelico's exclusive Seymour Duncan Great Dane pickups nail the sound of early '40s "dog ear" P-90s — biting bridge pickup tones with a warm and wooly neck sound that's favored by legions of jazzers. More and more guitarists are turning to the increased low-end potential of baritones, and with the Deluxe SS Baritone, D'Angelico is proving that they're capable of far more than just high-gain chunk!

D'Angelico exclusive Seymour Duncan Great Dane P-90s

Seymour Duncan designed this exclusive set of '40s-inspired P-90s to have a vintage tone to match this semi-hollow's vintage aesthetics. These pickups have all the bark and bite of their namesake in the treble position, perfect for nailing old-school blues and rock 'n' roll leads. The neck pickup delivers the exceedingly rich and deep clean tone that old P-90s are famous for, and it's a natural complement to the Deluxe SS Baritone's extended range!

Comfortable 26.75-inch scale for crossover guitarists

Baritones typically have quite a large scale length compared to standard guitars. Many models come dangerously close to the 30-inch range — that’s short-scale bass territory! D’Angelico designed the SS Baritone with a 26.75-inch scale (25 on the standard SS) to be more accessible to the average guitarist who wants to add a new sound to their toolbox with minimal adjustment. This provides a deep, rumbling tone when set to B–B baritone standard tuning, but it also has the secondary effect of making the Deluxe SS Baritone a joy to play with a slinky, low-tension feel.

The D’Angelico legacy

After mastering his craft during an 18-year apprenticeship, luthier John D’Angelico opened his shop in Manhattan’s Little Italy in 1932. Catering to New York’s many jazz musicians over the ensuing three decades, D’Angelico and a single apprentice became New York’s foremost stringed-instrument builders, creating over 1,000 treasured archtop guitars until John’s death in 1964. After his passing, D’Angelico’s legacy lived on only through his rare, legendary instruments. After decades, the D’Angelico brand has resurfaced, bringing back the playability and attention to detail of the company’s New York roots. Today, Sweetwater is delighted to offer this fine line of distinguished instruments. D’Angelico uses state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and the finest available materials to create playable works of art for today’s guitarist. From a modest shop in Little Italy to the world stage, D’Angelico’s dedication to quality craftsmanship ensures that this brand won’t be going dormant again any time soon.

Great Sound but pricey!

Ok, I must first state that I am a bassist that also plays the baritone guitar. I own the one pictured plus a TV Jones Spectra Sonic which is MIJ and "high end" I suppose compared to the D'Angelico MIK model. If you want a low cost bari because you dabble and occasionnally play in the lower range, this baby is probably not for you. It is a bit pricey for an instrument someone may use in one out of ten songs BUT I am the guy that uses it in every song so it is perfect.

The tone is great, the build quality is superb and with a set of flatwounds, it has that 1960's surf sound I was looking for. I would say it is not quite the instruement that TV Jones offers BUT it is about a thousand dollars less so it would not be fair to compare the two. It is far better than the competitors baris I have played that fall in the $ range. The hollow body gives this a unique sound and it can be used from everything from rock to country, jangle to surf and even jazz, depending on what tuning you use.

I tuned mine to low C. The "factory settings" (is there really such a thing on a guitar?) are low B. The vintage dog ear p90s definitely have that growl when you want it or the shimmering jangle should that be your bag. The three way tone switch gives players a real opportunity to change sound which makes this guitar more versatile than just a one trick pony.

The only knock I have with it is the satin finish. I have never been a fan. I know some people love that look but for $, I think a guitar should be glossy, especially one that perports to be a "vintage"esque tone machine. That was not enough to hold me back from purchasing this but it resulted in the reduction of a half star. The other half star was deducted for price. Let's get serious, Gretsch can crank out a superb MIJ guitar for $ more than this Made In Korea model. The Koreans build top notch gear, I love what they do but the Japanese still make the best imports in my opinion. If this bari had a special neck, body or appointments, I could see the premium price BUT to me, it looks like a warmed over six string with a little stiffer neck? Not really a great reason for the additional price.

Bottom line, I love this guitar but I use it for everything. If that sounds like you, pull the trigger on it, you will have no regrets!
