Great Fretless Acoustic-electric Bass from Guild

For the gigging acoustic bass guitarist in need of volume and great tone, Guild Guitars offers the B-240EF acoustic-electric bass. The B-240EF features a solid Sitka spruce top and layered mahogany back and sides for top-notch acoustic tone plugged or unplugged. The B-240EF offers a fast-response pau ferro fingerboard and bridge, as well as a slim C-shape mahogany neck profile that feels immediately comfortable in your hands, offering great playability. Finally, a Fishman Sonitone bass pickup system kicks out gorgeous deep, low-end tone when plugged in. Acoustic-electric bassists here at Sweetwater love the Guild B-240EF for its playability and affordability.

Discreet Fishman Sonitone pickup system for performing live

The Fishman Sonitone pickup system not only provides exceptional acoustic amplification, but the design of the Sonitone system is also discreet. The controls are accessed via the soundhole, so you won't have a bulky preamp and tone-compromising hole cut into the side of your instrument for the sake of getting a good live sound.

Engineered for a comfortable playing experience

The Guild B-240EF is engineered from the ground up to be comfortable and effortless to play. You'll notice the slinky-smooth string action along the 30-3/4" scale length, C-shaped neck. And the 1.625" nut width spaces the strings wonderfully for playing fast bass lines without feeling cramped or having to reach uncomfortably far for your next string.

Guild B-240EF Acoustic-electric Bass Guitar Features:

  • Jumbo body design for great volume and bass presence
  • Solid Sitka spruce top provides exceptional tone
  • Fishman Sonitone bass pickup system kicks out gorgeous deep, low-end tone when plugged in
  • Bone nut and saddle provide great tonal support and enhanced resonance
  • C-shaped mahogany neck profile that feels immediately comfortable in your hands
  • Great live tone with the Fishman Sonitone system

Great Acoustic Bass

I very pleased with the Guild B-240EF. Excellent for rock, country, bluegrass, jazz. I'm currently in a acoustic rock/country band.

Guild Fretless Acoustic Bass

I love the Guild Acoustic Bass Guitar. It is great for practice without having to plug in anywhere. In an intimate camp setting you might even be able to perform. Plugged in has a distinct acoustic sound. The tone is brash with lots of finger noise on the strings. There is a lot of resonance maybe even causing feedback when plugged in so be careful.

This is my first experience having a fretless. I suggest you try one before you buy one. The fret lines eliminate my challenges. I'm still a beginner so my finger reach is sloppy. Since I play by ear it's not a problem because I'm not constantly looking at music I can concentrate on finger placement.

I normally play a 5-string so I wanted to drop tune to BEAD. This is not possible with a stock guitar. Some modifications are necessary. If you use the standard strings they will be far too floppy. With fatter strings the peg on the B tuning machine is too small and the B string will break before you can tighten it. I picked up a Hipshot half inch tuning machine for the B string and will modify the rest eventually. I picked up a set of Ernie Ball Slinky Bass Strings BEAD 65 80 100 130 roundwounds. There is a definite advantage to upgrading the tuners as the wider peg affords finer tuning.

The Bronze Acoustic Strings are brash bright and noisy as I mentioned before. The slightly different strings tamed it down a bit so I match with the worship band better. The new strings are still loud enough for unplugged practice. Flatrounds I'm told will mellow out the tone even more, but then you start to lose the acoustic flavor.

Humidity: The place where I keep my Bass is dry in the winter. Thankfully being fretless I don't have to worry about fret sprouting. But now I'm concerned about the acoustic body cracking and splitting so I researched and got a humidification system. D'Addario makes Humiditrak Bluetooth Hygrometer with Humidity/Temperature Sensor. I velcroed the device inside the guitar body. Zager makes a humidifier that blocks the sound hole and is said to keep the humidity for months. So far Humiditrak is working great, we'll see how it fairs this winter.

Excellent!

I just bought this, it's my first acoustic bass. I'm pretty blown away! It has similar tonal characteristics and articulation of an upright string bass that I love. It's exactly what I was hoping for in a fretless acoustic bass guitar. I haven't used the internal pickups for recording or amping yet so cannot comment on that. Being I'm a 6-string guitarist, it will require learning some new left hand muscle memory since the scale is nearly 31". I'm up for the challenge! I am more pleased than pleased can be with this instrument. Highly recommended!
Music background: Classically trained as a child on trombone, with 50-years playing fingerstyle gutar (and many other instruments).

Super Value and Hard to Find

Okay, I haven't plugged it in through anything to check the electronics but the guitar itself is a winner. Beautiful, crisp sound, lots of good harmonics, I think largely as a result of the shorter scale length. Action was perfect out of the box. I am learning bass from 6-string experience, so the fret lines are a needed reference, but it's not going to take long to just get the feel and not have to look so much but just listen. This is a well built guitar and if you want acoustic fretless bass, there are few options out there. I think this is the obvious choice if you want either fret lines and/or shorter scale.
I'm surprised that a guitar of this price feels and plays and sounds this great.

Guild B-240EF has a Deep, resonate bass tone. Brings a smile to my face as I play.

The Guild B-240EF has that deep resonant bass tone that makes me want to play. To me that is very important. Acoustically, she goes from soft and mellow all the way to loud and strong. She is a big/thick bass as the lower bout is 4-3/4". But she is also light in weight 4 lbs. and 10 oz. to be comfortable as I play her. If you want a loud acoustic sound you need a lot of internal volume and that's why she's built the way she is. She's a keeper. I'm feeling that I want to give her a name but my wife's name ~ Juliana has been taken by my double bass since 1978. I'll think of a good name for her as I play her every night while in bed and my wife sleeping next to me, I also play her every day so I spend a lot of time with my Guild B-24-EF. - Peter age 72
