About Bass Guitars
No band is complete without a bassist anchoring the low end and adding a little spice to the rhythm section. Bass guitars have become a necessity in almost every music genre, whether adding silky-smooth bass lines or following the root note to each chord change. Here at Sweetwater, we carry traditional 4-string bass guitars, extended-range basses, acoustic basses, left-handed models, and much more. Check them all out today!
4-string Bass Guitars
The 4-string bass guitar is the most common bass in bands and is great for beginners and professionals alike. 4-string bass guitars are tuned to the same notes as the bottom four strings of a 6-string guitar: E, A, D, G. Many iconic basses are 4-string basses, such as the Jazz Bass, Precision Bass, Viola Bass, and many more.
5-string Bass Guitars
Looking for extra low end out of your bass but don’t want to tune down your bass down to achieve it? Look no further than a 5-string bass. A 5-string bass comes with an additional low string that is typically tuned to B. Bassists who play heavy metal, prog rock, and jazz tend to lean toward 5-string basses, but it can be played with any genre and style.
6+ string Bass Guitars
Are five strings just not enough to get you up in the morning? Don’t fret! Sweetwater offers 6+ string basses that will be sure to rattle you and your bones to the core. We carry many of the top brands for 6+ string basses, including Ibanez, Sire, Warwick, and more. Check them out today!
Fretless Bass Guitars
A fretless bass guitar does not use frets to define pitch on the fingerboard, similar to a violin, cello, or upright bass. The lack of frets allows the player to manipulate the pitch using a variety of techniques. It can also result in a different tone from a fretted bass, such as a softer attack and more singing sustain, and it can be described as having a growling, warm character.
Acoustic Bass Guitars
Like an acoustic guitar, an acoustic bass does not rely on electronic amplification to project or transmit sound. An acoustic bass features a resonating chamber (its body) that amplifies the vibrations from the strings to provide sufficient volume for the sound to reach listeners. These are great for small venues or for learning at home.
