About Bass Guitars

No band is complete without a bassist anchoring the low end and adding a little spice to the rhythm section. Bass guitars have become a necessity in almost every music genre, from adding danceable bass lines to supporting root notes on chord changes. Here at Sweetwater, we carry traditional 4-string bass guitars, extended-range basses, acoustic basses, left-handed models, and more.

4-string Bass Guitars

The 4-string bass guitar is one of the most common basses in bands and is great for beginners and professionals alike. 4-string bass guitars are tuned like the bottom four strings of a 6-string guitar (E, A, D, G), only an octave lower. Many well-known basses are 4-string basses, such as the Jazz Bass, Precision Bass, and Violin Bass.

5-string Bass Guitars

Looking for extra low end without drop-tuning to get it? A 5-string bass adds a low string, typically tuned to B, below your low E. Bassists who play heavy metal, prog rock, gospel, and jazz often lean toward 5-string basses, but they suit a wide range of genres and techniques.

6+ string Bass Guitars

If five strings aren’t enough, Sweetwater also offers 6+ string basses from respected brands such as Ibanez, Sire, and Warwick, typically with an added high C string for an even wider range of expression.

Fretless Bass Guitars

Much like an upright bass, a fretless bass guitar does not use frets to define pitch on the fingerboard. Without frets, players can manipulate pitch using continuous slides (glissando) and microtones. A fretless bass can also sound different from a fretted bass, often with a singing sustain and a growling character.

Acoustic Bass Guitars

Going unplugged? An acoustic bass does not rely on electronic amplification to project sound. Its resonating body amplifies the vibrations from the strings, which makes it a good fit for practicing at home or playing in small, quiet spaces.

Eager to learn bass guitar but don’t know what you need to get started? Sweetwater has bass guitar packages that bundle a bass, an amp, a strap, and other accessories to kick off your learning and performance journey.
