Power, Portability, and 3-dimensional Motion Sound Tone

Looking for a lightweight gigging amp without compromising on world-class keyboard tone? The KP-408SX comes equipped with the same 3-dimensional studio sheen as its larger Motion Sound siblings, only in a much lighter and easier-to-transport package. This 2-channel stereo keyboard combo amp boasts a pair of Eminence 8-inch Beta-8A speakers and two 3.5-inch dynamic drivers that reproduce any keyboard sound maximum articulation and a formidable full-range response. Moreover, the Motion Sound-signature V-style cabinet configuration perfectly pairs with the KP-408SX’s per-channel 3D expander control to provide your audience with a lush, immersive keyboard sound rarely found outside of professional studio tracks. Finally, the KP-408SX’s ultra-lightweight cabinet clocks in at a mere 40 lbs — perfect for gigging musicians searching for the greatest weight-to-volume ratio possible from their keyboard combo amp.

Studio-grade Eminence 8-inch drivers

The Motion Sound KP-408SX features an impressive speaker setup to deliver a full, punchy sound across your keyboard’s entire sonic spectrum. This amplifier’s 400–600W watts RMS (200 per channel, 600 total with a passive speaker or SS-15 subwoofer) are fed through a robust configuration of two 250W Eminence Beta-8A speakers enhanced with an additional pairing of 3.5-inch 50W dynamic drivers. It’s an incredibly powerful setup that’s more than powerful enough for most live performances while remaining lightweight enough to save your shoulders when lugging around your gear to the gig.

Exceptionally immersive 3D stereo imaging

Motion Sound keyboard amps are tough to top if you require lush, spacious stereo imaging! This amplifier’s unique V-shaped front panel drastically widens your stereo field, giving your audience a breathtaking level of sonic depth and clarity. Moreover, Sweetwater keyboardists love how Motion Sound’s patented 3D expander technology — independently available on each of the amp’s two channels — bolsters your sound field even further to elevate the sound of both hardware and software keyboard instruments to immersive new heights.

Motion Sound KP-408SX 400–600W 2 x 8-inch Stereo Keyboard Combo Amp Features:

Reviews

Good Amp, But Know What Components Are Inside
My KP-408S sounds great, I have had it for a year and a few months now... When I read the manual, I noticed that the configuration on the back was different from that described in the manual. I wrote to Motion Sound about it, and they said that I had received an advanced model - one that they are now calling the KP-208SX. So this review is relevant to both models.

Since a year has now passed, the Motion Sound warranty has expired, and for me that's a signal that I can start considering modding the amp. In attempting to do so, I found out something that you might be interested in knowing...

I have been a big fan of Eminence Beta speakers, particularly the Beta 8A. I gig with a pair about 10 times/week installed in a pair of EV SX80's, and they have been rocking for about 8 years so far. The use of Beta 8A's in the KP-408S was a key selling point in my decision to buy this amp (I had owned an earlier model previously, and that was the best keyboard amp I ever had up to that time - and BTW it had Betas in it too.)... However, I felt that somehow even the Beta 8A's were not giving the full tone I was expecting in this KP-408S. So my first (and probably only) project on this amp was going to be swapping them out with some 8" 300W RMS subwoofers that I had found. When I opened the KP-408S, however, to my surprise I found that instead of Eminence Beta 8A's in there, there were FaitalPro 8FE300's in there.

I don't know this FaitalPro speaker. I do know Eminence Beta 8A's, and I do know that this FaitalPro speaker is not an Eminence Beta 8A, which is what was and still is advertised as being in the KP-408S and the KP-408SX, and is what I thought I had paid for.

I know that Motion Sound has been advertising FaitalPro speakers in other models for some time, but it appears that they have been getting fast and loose with substituting them in models whenever they so choose. Maybe it's an availability issue, but I sure would like to know what is being delivered to me. Especially with music gear -- sometime in the future I go to sell this on Craig's List, I brag about it having Eminence Beta 8A's (as Motion Sound continues to do), then my buyer opens it up and sees something different. And I am in the dog house, or worse.

Here is the differences in specs that I have been able to find:
AES Freq Range Sens Net Weight Voice Coil Diam.
Faitalpro 8FE300 250 W 80-5000 Hz 95 dB 3.1 kg (6.8 lb) 52 mm (2.05")
Eminence Beta 8A 225 W 78-4500 Hz 95 dB 2.99kg (6.60 lb) 51mm (2.0")

Not too much difference, and the amp sounds great! It is still the best keyboard amp I have ever used. BTW I run digital piano through it exclusively. But I have to admit that something was happening that made me consider modding it. And as reinforcement of this thinking, you'll see several KP-408S reviews that say something to the effect that it's good but will be great if used with a subwoofer. BUT above all, I just would like to know for sure what is in the amp that I am carrying around and using (and paid for). For this reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

I'm going to buy a pair of Beta 8A's and put them in there, and not look back. But I thought it might be helpful for you to know about this, especially since if you look at Motion Sound's marketing text, they emphasize the amp having Beta 8A's as a major selling point.
