Allen & Heath sound with USB!

Allen & Heath's ZED-436 gives you all the essentials you need for flexible live mixing: 32 channels with smooth, long-throw faders, 4-band EQ with swept mids, six aux sends, and four sub groups. You also get a direct output on every channel and master level controls on all outputs. It's an incredible amount of flexibility, at a great value, but Allen & Heath added another dimension of functionality to the ZED-436: USB connectivity! Now you can get clean, clear audio straight into and out of your computer with the ZED-436.

Allen & Heath ZED-436 at a Glance:
  • Legacy
  • Best of previous designs
  • USB

Legacy
The ZED-436 has a fantastic pedigree which comes from nearly 40 years of making mixing desks for the professional sound community. The audio circuitry is based on years of continual development and refinement and the performance of all the elements within the mixer has been perfected to ensure the very best sound quality possible.

Best of previous designs
The ZED 4-Bus series takes inspiration from different product lines within the A&H range, combining them with fresh new ideas to give stunning results in a neat and easy to use package.
The padless DuoPre mic/line pre-amplifier is the new design first implemented on the ZED-14 and delivers a high-headroom, low-noise signal. The 4-band, 2 sweep EQ, along with the low noise summing amps, is borrowed from the acclaimed GL2400, while the bus architecture is a simplified, but equally comprehensive, version of that employed in the successful GL series.
USB
The USB audio interface, with its uniquely flexible capability, allows different signals to be sent to USB, from LR or from selected aux buses. The USB return signal can be routed straight to the LR mix or to a stereo channel. The connectors are placed on the top surface for easy plugging & patching, and the construction, with individual circuit boards firmly nutted to the top panel, is as rock solid as Allen & Heath's top of the range ML Series mixers.

Allen & Heath ZED-436 Features:
  • 32 Channel
  • 4-band EQ with 2 swept mids and in/out switch
  • 6 auxiliary sends (2 pre, 2 post, 2 pre/post)
  • 4 sub groups fed from each channel
  • L, R and M main mix outputs
  • Individual channel 48V phantom power
  • Direct output on every mono channel
  • 2 dual stereo inputs with 4-band EQ
  • Peak and signal indication on every channel
  • 2 matrix sections available; can send output to USB
  • Configurable USB stereo audio in/out
  • Master level controls on all outputs
  • Easy to use layout - all connections and controls on top surface
Allen & Heath's ZED-436 brings the best of the past into the present!

Incredibly Versatile Console!

This is one of my favorite analog consoles!
The build quality is top of the line!
The patch and routing capabilities are hard to beat!
The board can be split multiple ways for various studio rooms, zoned routing, simultaneous independent Main and Monitor mixes, various fills and Inserts on every input and output!
Direct out on each input channel!
4-band tunable EQ covers 35hz to 15khz for deepest bass and airy treble.
If you have the mental capacity to handle a console like this, you won't be disappointed!
The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Loving My Zed

The ZED-436 is one of the best things to come out of Ållen and Heath in a long time. The sound quality and features on this mixer are exceptional regardless of the price. We use it daily in a high quantity production environment and we've had no problems with the mixer at all.

THE NEGATIVES -

The onboard fan is a bit loud for recording control rooms.

As someone else mentioned there are no dedicated effects returns (there are a couple of extra bare-bones adjustable-level stereo inputs hiding at the top of the stereo channel strips).

The onboard usb recording interface was a good idea but it's poorly implemented and way-under powered for a product in 2012, 16-bit only. Think of it as costing you nothing, it's essentially free in the mixer, it's easy to ignore it without negative consequences.

The metering is kind of wonky and minimalist but it is better than nothing.

THE POSITIVES

This is A LOT of inputs for the price and the sound quality is really very good, low noise, wide response, incredible EQ (32 channels of it), lots of mixing and grouping flexibility, direct output jacks, inserts in the right places and INSIDE the console it's modular, pots can be replaced if an accident happens. I'm so tired of slab type mixer construction like the Mackie and Behringer brands use, they're not impossible to repair but they're 10x harder than a modular board like this A&H.

I love this mixer, finally I can plug in all my keyboards and synths and still have channels left.

The center section of my mixing room is a custom Neve 8816/8804 console which feeds a pair of Meyer HD-1 monitors, it sounds brilliant. I use the ZED-436 as a side-car mixer (on Neve console stacking inputs) to bring together keyboards and route effects during mixing. The ZED sounds every bit as good as the Neve in day to day use, under extreme scrutiny the Neve has a few more dB of headroom but those points on both mixers are in excess of the Zero dBfs input level(s) of my Apogee converters so it does not matter.

With the extreme low price of ZED it's easy to dismiss it as a toy, you'd be missing out on one of the best values in pro audio mixing if you did. (hint: directly compare ZED sonics to the much more expensive Toft line). ZED is a very capable performer hiding in a very low cost package, in economic times like today, what's not to like about this kind of value.

Sounds Great - working Great

My tech guys installed this mixer last week and we have had one Sunday working with it. So many more options than on our previous mixer. The Zed-436 is a keeper and we are very please with it so far!

nice board

Great board for the price. Love the European eq and the USB connectivity. Just wish it had aux returns.

4 years and 2 ZED-436

I purchase the ZED-436 for a House of Worship to replace a 20+ year old Sound Craft board that used roughly 3 times a week and begging for an upgrade. The first ZED-436 last roughly 2 weeks before the Left Channel Main out stopped working. Sweetwater quickly replaced this unit for our current ZED-436 unit that we have now used for 4+ years. The fan unit is now making awful noises and will likely need to be replace. I guess I expected not to have hardware issues so early in the boards life.

The board itself as been wonderful and easy to use. The only thing I could want is more channels! I would recommend this to a friend but after noting the issues I had. I gave it 3 Stars. If it worked flawlessly, it would have been 5 Stars.
