How much does a marching snare drum weigh?


A typical marching snare can weigh anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds. Factor in a heavyweight carrier, and you’re talking as much as 30 pounds. As you can see, marching snare is not for the faint of heart! But, as any field percussionist can tell you, the discomfort of practice is worth the payoff of a successful show run.


How do you tune a marching snare drum?


Today’s marching drumlines want a snare drum that’s tabletop tight with just a hint of a snare sound (or gut sound) to keep articulation intact from behind the ensemble. This is only possible through the high-performance hardware, drumheads, and drum keys found on modern marching snare drums. Here’s a great marching snare tuning tutorial from instructor Matt Savage and our friends at Remo. Matt walks us through the process of seating new heads, top and bottom, and tuning each tension rod using a T-key and the star, or crisscross, tensioning method.


What’s the most common marching snare technique?


Every drumline and drum corps will have its preference, but by far the most common marching snare techniques alive today are matched grip and traditional (“trad”) grip. Today’s players are encouraged to learn both techniques since both have their unique advantages and visual style.
