About Soprano Saxophones

The smallest and highest-pitched member of the standard concert sax lineup is the soprano saxophone. This smooth-jazz and Dixieland darling has gained a cult following in the past 30 years, thanks to players like Kenny G and Branford Marsalis. However, some may be surprised to learn that the instrument’s use as a solo instrument stems back to bebop, with greats like Steve Lacy, Sidney Bechet, and even John Coltrane. The soprano saxophone is famous for its sweet, oboe-like timbre and, in the case of the straight soprano, eye-catching inline design.

Note: Smaller and higher-pitched saxophones, such as the sopranino and sopranissimo (soprillo), do exist, but these are far from common in a typical jazz, pop, or orchestral setting.

Soprano Sax FAQs

Straight soprano sax vs. curved soprano sax: Which is right for me?

Although similar in voice, straight and curved soprano saxophones each come with a unique set of strengths. The most important consideration is the type of sound you’re after. If you’re drawn to a more traditional soprano sound, then we at Sweetwater would recommend a straight soprano sax. If you’re looking for a soprano that can give you that real-time feedback and in-your-face tone as only a curved horn can do, then go for a curved soprano sax. Another consideration is portability. Are you busking or commuting with your soprano? The straight soprano sax tends to be more compact than a curved soprano, especially when cased up.

Who invented the soprano saxophone?

Belgian inventor Adolphe Sax (born Antoine-Joseph Sax) is credited with creating the saxophone as we know it today. Sax’s iconic hooked shape would lead to the later development of the baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, and curved soprano saxophone.

How much does a soprano saxophone cost?

Soprano saxes at Sweetwater vary widely in price. Our entry-level Selmer and Sax Dakota models come in at around $2,000, while a top-of-the-line Keilwerth or Selmer Paris model can easily push five figures. Students: be sure to consider our soprano sax rental options as well.
