About Tenor Saxophones

Of the “big four” saxophone types — bari, tenor, alto, and soprano — the tenor has the reputation for being easy to pick up and versatile enough to handle any musical style thrown at it.

Why the tenor sax? Its timbre ranges from smooth to sultry, and its register (Bb3–F#5) closely matches that of the male singing voice. These qualities keep tenor players in high demand for concert and marching bands, as well as blues, jazz, and pop gigs.

Just listen to Sweetwater’s fearless leader, Chuck Surack, explain why the tenor sax continues to hold a special place in his heart:

I personally believe the tenor sax is the most versatile and maybe one of the easiest to learn [of the major saxophone types]. It tends to have some of the least intonation problems (and EVERY model and EVERY brand of sax has some intonation problems) [ . . . ] The other great thing about tenor is that it is a little easier to play altissimo (really high notes) range. [ . . . ] So for my playing, I can make my tenor sound almost any way I want . . . I can get the low, lush, ballad sound if I need it, I can “rock” in [its] normal range, or I can wail/scream in [its] upper range and can get practically all the notes I can get on my alto.

And this is coming from a former full-time touring saxophonist and founding member of the Sweetwater All Stars! Whether it’s your first sax or your fiftieth, you can’t go wrong with the tenor sax. And wherever your passion leads you, your journey starts with Sweetwater.
