Great Headphone Mic

The Shure WH20 is a rugged, lightweight, dynamic headset microphone that provides high-quality voice pickup. It fits securely for active microphone users, such as aerobics instructors and musicians, with low visibility for stage appearances.

The cardioid (unidirectional) pickup pattern provides greater gain-before-feedback and isolation from ambient noise and other unwanted sound sources. A carefully-shaped frequency response includes a voice-frequency presence peak and a low-frequency roll-off to compensate for the proximity effect inherent in cardioid mics.

Reviews

Great Mic
I have a had a few different Shure headset mics and this is my favorite. It sounds great and seems to be built better than the others. Also it folds for easy transport (I put mine in a plastic hard case). Also, the mic is on the right side instead of the left like the other Shure headset mics. Super light as well..... I love it.

Excellent condenser headset mic for VP-770, or other vocoders!
The Shure WH20 is an excellent small condenser headset mic that is PERFECT for my Roland VP-770 Vocal & Ensemble keyboard. A dynamic mic will not work as the signal is too weak and needs a boost by using a condenser mic. I'm am totally happy with the quality and performance of the Shure WH20. I suppose it will work with any vocoder which supplies phantom power, as well as with any voice recognition software you're using such as Nuance's Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Nice Dynamic Headset Mic For Drummers
This is NOT a condenser mic as described by the above reviewer. It is a head worn dynamic mic worn over the ears with the mic positioned about 1 inch from the corner of the mouth. There is a thin cable with a cable clip that snaps to the headpiece. The version being reviewed terminates in a standard 3 pin XLR connector and the mic comes with a windscreen and belt or clothing clip on the connector. it is supplied with a cable long enough to route through clothing and is designed to be connected to a standard XLR mic cable. The thin cable on the mic is not intended to be connected direct to a mixer or amplifier. I disagree with the above review in regard to using it in a performing situation. I am a drummer and have used an SM58 for years. This is a quality mic for everyday vocal performance and gigging. It's fantastic to have the freedom of not being behind a boom stand that seemed to always to get in the way. I'm sorry I waited as long as I did to get a headset. So far I've been happy with the sound and most people still think I'm using the SM58. The sound quality is close enough for my use as a backing singer. There's no discernable difference when comparing live recordings using both mics. There's 2 issues I have with the mic. One is personal opinion. You have to get used to having the mic in a fixed location right in front of you. If you are used to varying volume and tone by moving closer or away from a mic this will take some getting used to. Also you might want to add an inline on / off switch to avoid amplifying between song chatter with bandmates. The Second is technical and the reason for 4 stars. The output level is lower than most dynamic mics and requires more level at the board. If you have weak mic preamps you may want to add a preamp. Art makes a good one for about $40 bucks and it adds some tube warmth to the vocal. The wired XLR version works great for me as a drummer and percussionist who doesn't move around the stage. The other 2 versions have connectors to use with common wireless systems. Make sure to buy the correct version. In general this is a great mic for general stage use. Good quality, great price and a no brainer for singing drummers on a budget.

rugged dynamic for noisy environment
The WH20 is a dynamic microphone (another reviewer mistakenly says that it is a condenser which requires phantom power) designed to provide intelligible speech (not high-fidelity) in a noisy environment. The element is mounted on a flexible gooseneck. For the best signal-to-noise ratio, the front of the element should be adjusted to stand about a finger-width from the lips, over to the side of the mouth. The element is comparable to the element used on the Shure headsets. It is designed for communication, as opposed to performance or recording. The behind-the-ear hooks at first feel a bit strange, but the headset is usable with eyeglasses. As a dynamic, the output is a bit on the low side, but adequate. The cord of the XLR model is a bit shorter than might be desired. The WH20 combined with a Tascam DR-40 (which has XLR inputs) is good and inexpensive solution for hands-free applications such as dictation while driving.
