Stereo Sound Made Simple
Getting a proper stereo image when recording can be tricky. Relative placement of the two microphones is key, and even when you find your perfect setup, phase issues can be endemic. If you’re looking for a way to simplify that process while still retaining world-class sound quality, the Schoeps MSTC 74 U boasts an exceedingly natural-sounding fixed ORTF pattern in a single-mic form factor. Two MK 4 cardioid capsules are arranged in a fixed T-shape pattern at a 110-degree angle with 170mm of spacing — a textbook ORTF setup. Plus, when testing this mic out at Sweetwater, we found that the MSTC 74 U’s combination of a fixed stereo pattern and a single-mic setup made it incredibly easy to position for both veteran sound engineers and newcomers alike!

Natural sounding ORTF design
The Schoeps MSTC 74 U is designed to offer a fixed stereo response that’s commonly referred to as ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française), developed in french broadcast studios in the early 1960s. This technique places the mics at a 110-degree angle with 170mm of space between the two capsules, resulting in an incredibly natural sound that excels when recording ensembles and choirs. Plus, unlike many other stereo setups, the MSTC74 U is eminently easy to position and place due to its fixed-configuration design.
