Iron in the signal path for the 500 Series!

The MP-500NV is a single channel mic preamp that is designed to take the classic sound of the all-time studio-standard 1073 preamp and bring it to a new level of modern sonic fidelity while fitting neatly into a 500 series rack. Does MP-500NV meet its design goals? Absolutely, with accuracy, transparency and vintage "tunable" sound! The circuitry allows for brilliant transformer saturation or the soft distortions of a single-ended amplifier. The sound of electric guitars, sound modules, and drums to add vitality, presence, and real punch benefit from extreme pushing of the MP-500NV.

Great River MP-500NV at a Glance:
  • Great with all mic types
  • Classic Great River design
  • Vintage Sound
Great with all mic types

The MP-500NV is a professional quality microphone preamplifier designed to re-create the vintage sound characteristics of the early 1970s large consoles. Modern components give the MP-500NV more clarity, punch and performance under normal use. In addition, features like metering before and after the major gain stages let the user drive it hard to greatly expand the range of sonic options. All microphones will benefit from the power of the MP-500NV preamplifier, including dynamic, condenser and especially ribbon types.

Classic Great River design

The MP-500NV uses the same audio and metering circuit board found in the NV series preamplifiers. This unit is designed to fit into a 500 series rack using 2 available slots. It receives its power supply from the host rack. The unit is equipped with a HI-Z instrument jack that has its own input amplifier and was designed for DI applications.

Vintage Sound

The Great River MP-500NV features iron in the signal path for that big vintage sound. Its no-latency output monitoring provides a buffered sound feed to your DAW workstation. The MP-500NV's hi-Z input is ideal to shape the sound for bass, electric guitar, and sound modules. Dual metering provides visual monitoring of gain staging. The ultra-quiet noise floor delivers "stealth" performance for rich, textured vocal sounds. The Great River MP-500NV also has a full +70dB of input gain so you can take that prized ribbon mic out of the cabinet for a rich, creamy sound with all the detail and no muddiness.

Here's the bottom line. The Great River MP-500NV is a golden channel priced for the project studio and equally at home in a world class facility. This preamp has the ability to enhance the sound of high-end mics as well as being able to make inexpensive mics sound better. Just place your trusty SM57 in front of your guitar amp and run it through the MP-500NV, and you'll hear what we mean.

Great River MP-500NV Features:
  • XLR balanced in and out connections
  • hi-Z input on front panel
  • Output gain from -25 to +10db; maximum overall gain 70db
  • Frequency response: 20Hz to 75kHz

NOT A NEVE...IT'S A GREAT RIVER....

THIS PREAMP IS UNCANNY. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW TO SET THE OUTPUT OR INPUT LEVELS ALONG WITH THE IMPEDANCE OR LOADING SWITCH. BUT WHEN YOU FIDDLE AROUND WITH IT....YOU CAN HEAR SOME LOW END...OR MORE ATTACK DEPENDING HOW YOU PLAY AROUND WITH IT. I DON'T HEAR A NEVE OR A BAE...VINTECH...ETC.......I JUST HEAR A GREAT RIVER. I TRIED IT ON MANY THINGS...EVEN A HI HAT...AND IT CUTS THE ROUGH EDGE OFF OF HARSH INSTRUMENTS. SO...THAT BEING SAID...I LIKE IT!

Great Preamp

I own a Clarette 8 pre along with a duel channel A-Pacifica preamp along with two MP-500NV's in my lunchbox. This thing sounds great on all kinds of different sources I've thrown at it. It really smooths out the highs on a bright or harsh sound source or mic. I own a TLM 103 that I mainly use for vocals, and through all other preamps it sounds too harsh and the high frequencies/siblance are too pronounced to my ears. This preamp smooths all of that out and really makes the mic sit nicely in the mix.

It also does wonders for bass guitar, drums, and room mics. Particularly on bass, it gives the sound extra weight and solidifies the low end in a really pleasant way and has become my go-to for those sound sources. The loading feature also gives a nice subtle lift to the mid/high frequencies that I use often.

Overall a really great workhorse pre-amp that you won't regret getting for your studio.

What I been waiting for!!

My sales engineer had been telling me about this micpre for years. I can't ever tell you what took me so long to get it but now that I have it I'm kicking myself for not getting it sooner.

Professional Preamp

This is a pro preamp. There are so many options nowadays and this is a very safe one. It is really versatile and sounds great. If you cannot get a great sound out of this thing, i promise you it is not the pre's fault!

I have owned a pair of them in my Radial 500 series rack for a year now and i really love them. Just looking at the build quality alone is so revealing to me. It takes up two slots, which kind of sucks, but the units are completely full of electronics. They did not want to compromise their product and trust me it paid off.

I also have a pair of A Designs P1s which i love and i use both these preamps for cutting a lot of vocals with a U87, Manley Reference Cardioid and RE20, depending on the singer. When i have the time, i run the vocals through both pres and pick which one i prefer. If i dont have time, i just plug into the Great River. It always sounds great. I have also cut a lot of electric guitar and bass, both mic'd and DI, and i love this pre for both. For clean guitar and acoustic, i often prefer the P1, but i would still be happy if i only had this unit.

Overall a real workhorse pre, and truly pro. Not just a more affordable version than a 1073.. Do yourself a huge favor and do not think of it that way. This is an amazing pre in its own right, and in the same league as Neve, API, etc. I find it sounds quite different from a 1073, and do not even think of it as Neveish anymore. It is simply a Great River, the way a Neve is a Neve, and an API is an API. Try one out for yourself and you will see what i mean!

Lastly i will say that there are products available that became so popular for one reason or another, like Neumann, Neve, Pro Tools, etc. People will buy them, because that's what they have heard is good or pro or standard or whatever. Some of these products, you are paying way too much just for that name brand. It's supply and demand people. Other products, like Great River, you pay just for quality. Don't get me wrong, i love my API compressor and eq, and my U87... I am just saying don't be blinded by the hype and sleep on an awesome product like this just because it isn't the single biggest name out there. Plus, do you really wanna sound just like everybody else??
