The Epitome of Epiphone Archtop Elegance

The 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe Regent is an alluring throwback to Epiphone’s pre-Gibson 1950s era, a time when Epiphone’s archtops were considered some of the finest instruments available in America. This instrument’s fully hollow layered maple body grants a crisp, airy acoustic resonance straight out of the jazz age, while the robust 5-piece mahogany/maple neck’s medium “C” profile forms a comfortable platform for intricate melodic leads and all manner of chordal complexity. Period-correct appointments abound, from the glassy 12-inch-radius ebony fingerboard’s mother-of-pearl historic cloud inlays to the floating wooden bridge, gorgeous Epiphone historic tuners, and beyond. A pair of Epiphone NY Mini Humbucker pickups ties everything together with a clear, present tone that slices right through the humbucker/single-coil paradigm. In short, the Epiphone 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe is a top-class archtop through and through.

Comfortably curved medium “C” neck profile

Full but not unwieldy, the medium “C” profile found on the 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe Regent is a favorite of Sweetwater guitarists of all styles and backgrounds. The profile is certainly much more manageable than the baseball-bat neck found on many 1950s archtops, and it’s a supremely comfortable platform for jazzy chord work to deep, bluesy leads. Moreover, this guitar’s neck is built with a stout 5-piece mahogany/maple design for seriously sturdy stability. It’s all finished with a glassy ebony fingerboard in an easy-playing 12-inch radius, capped with gorgeous mother-of-pearl historic cloud inlays.

Acoustic-like full hollowbody tone

If lush resonance and rich, airy tone are on your must-have list of tonal requirements, nothing beats a full hollowbody archtop like the Epiphone 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe Regent. Stunning layered maple forms this guitar's top, sides, and back for a clear and crisp tone that simply blooms with opulent overtones, making even the simplest fingerboard work shine with beauty. Paired with a duo of Epiphone NY Mini Humbucker pickups, the 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe Regent is more than ready to tackle mellow jazz, biting blues, and soulful, rootsy rock.

A plethora of pre-Gibson Epiphone appointments

As you might have guessed from the 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe’s ornate appearance, Epiphone’s pre-Gibson archtop instruments were (and still very much are) renowned for their extravagant aesthetics. Blooming cloud and flower mother-of-pearl inlays, glittering gold hardware, premium tuners — every inch of the 150th Anniversary Zephyr is decked to the nines to enrapture the eyes of both you and your audience. Even the octagonal knobs and distinctive pickup mounting system are straight from the vintage Zephyr blueprint, yielding an instrument that might as well have come straight out of the 1950s.

Epiphone 150th Anniversary Zephyr DeLuxe Regent Hollowbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Inspired by Epiphone’s pre-Gibson days as one of America’s premier archtop builders
  • Layered maple body produces a crisp, airy, and exceedingly resonant tone
  • Stout 5-piece mahogany/maple neck in a medium “C” profile that’s sure to please players of all styles
  • 12-inch-radius ebony fingerboard studded with beautiful mother-of-pearl historic cloud inlays
  • Dual Epiphone NY Mini Humbucker pickups deliver a warm, balanced response that’s a natural fit for old-school jazz, blues, and lower-gain rock
  • Classic floating wooden bridge and trapeze tailpiece offer a rich, mellow tone with stunning overtones
  • A plethora of aesthetic features inspired by the original Zephyr, including vintage-style octagonal knobs, Epiphone historic tuners, flower headstock inlay, 3-ply binding, and custom period-style pickup mounts

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

No buyers remorse here

While this is primarily a Jazz guitar, I'm not a Jazz player. I do love to listen to Jazz though (Mingus, etc), just not play it.
I usually play blues and classic rock type stuff. My first guitar (age 8) was a maple hollowbody with a wooden bridge, so that sound is in my DNA.
I'm pretty picky about guitar related stuff.... when I saw this one, I just had to have it. I wasn't disappointed!
First off, I like all-maple bodies. No solid spruce tops for me. This one is all maple, and it's layered maple. To the best of my knowledge, that means that only maple is used in the laminate.... no filler. Some subtle Birdseye going on with my copy.
Aside from hollowbodies, I was primarily a Fender guy, so I love the tight bottom/punchy mid/bell like top of 25.5" scale guitars.
This one has all of that. The articulation is incredible. Not the least bit muddy with the acoustic sound. Most old original Epi models seem to be 25.5" scale.
I'm also not a fan of full size Gibson humbuckers. This one has minibuckers in it. They're bright and articulate, not even close to muddy even on the neck pos with the tone rolled off. The neck pup is amazing. Love the placement away from the neck, like an ES 175. Lots of old Epis seem to have the neck placement like that. The neck pup gets great overdrive when pushed. The bridge has a little less oomph, but it sounds good.
The neck isn't as large as I thought it would be, but it's not uncomfortable. I didn't think about it while I was playing, and that's about the best compliment I can give a neck.
The fretboard is a beautiful slab of ebony, and the fret markers are mother of pearl, nicely done.
The fit and finish and craftsmanship of the guitar are outstanding. I haven't noticed any flaws.
My copy is 6.5 lbs. Is comfortable both to sit or stand and play. Access to the upper frets is very good.
The Switchcraft switch and jack are both solid, and the CTS pots are a dream. Very nice taper that doesn't end up too muddy rolled off.
Impressive.
The acoustic tone out of the box didn't sound too tight, as most hollowbodies do before they get broken in. I can't wait to hear what this one sounds like after the break in, it's quite gorgeous sounding already.
Overall, an outstanding guitar. I do have a few quibbles though.
The first thing I looked for was that the pickguard was see-through.... it's not. A minor disappointment. The pickguard is well made and attached well.
The most noticeable problem is with the gorgeous vintage Epi tuners. They're stunning, but could possibly be the worst working tuners on any of my guitars. Plenty of play before the gear grabs, then turning doesn't seem to do much. Takes a bit to get into tune. The tuners seem to be the only "cheap" equipment on the guitar.
I'm pretty happy with everything else.
The last bit of contention is with the bridge. It's a beautiful Ebony piece to match the fretboard. Mine seems to be cut a bit shallow under the Low E and A strings. When I got the guitar, the A string wasn't where it was supposed to be on the bridge. But the Low E is really the main problem.
Since I'm not a Jazz guy, and I don't get to practice as much as I like, I tune my 25.5" guitars down a half step. This lower tension has the Low E string slipping out of place constantly. I ended up cocking the bridge and this seemed to help a bit.
It might be a non problem for me in the future though as I'm planning on switching from the 12s to 10s with a plain G. The bridge is probably cut for thinner strings.
My favored guitars as of late have been a single cut Les Paul Jr, and a Black Beauty. I'm pretty sure this dream-come-true Epi Zephyr Deluxe Regent just stole the top spot from them.

Thankx, Sweetwater

Blast from the past!

The Epiphone arrived safely by FedEx (very well packaged by Sweetwater) and when I got it out it did not disappoint! Nicely set up out of the box and in immaculate condition-this guitar plays like butter-it's everything a 1950's hollow body guitar should be. It has a myriad of sounds from T-bone Walker, Wes Montgomery, Chuck Berry, to early BB King!
Great job with both the esthetics and the sound(love those mini hum buckets and that smooth neck).
Great job Epiphone and Sweetwater!
Music background: 60 years of playing music-sometimes professionally.

This one is something special

So glad I got this one! This feels like a proper Epiphone from a time before the brand was demoted by Gibson ownership. An elegant company flagship that can swing softly, chunk out comping chords or single note runs till the wee small hours of the morning. Predictable and solid playing experience that feels like you have known it all your life. Strong and crystal clear with very responsive tone controls. Nothing feels cheap or rushed.

If you are reading this review and are considering this guitar then you probably already know how important the Zephyr was in the development of the pre rock and roll era of the 40s and 50s. Not for everyone I suppose but it will get you from 40's Western swing to big band and bebop gracefully.

It's the real deal.

It might not be THE ONE, but it is the one for now

Sweetwater did an excellent job on the setup with flats. It Plays just the way I ordered it, and I'm thrilled. It sounds great but lacks anything super special in the overall tone. It has perfectly gigable sound and characteristics when playing on the neck pickup or blending both; the bridge is lacking on its own. I suspect that if the bridge pickup were raised slightly, it would have more appeal. It's simply beautiful to look at. Full disclosure: it arrived to me with the neck pickup lead wire broken free of its pot. Sweetwater took care of the issue, which most likely occurred during shipping. One of the tuning keys (G-string) has a bit of red in the molded portion, making this instrument instantly unique; I love it so much that I named the guitar "Redgie the Regent." (get it?) This is my first "jazz box," and it immediately became my most-played guitar; I'm sure it is not THE ONE, but it will more than do for right now as I am plowing through standard after standard. The hardshell case is very nice and has the 150th-anniversary logo screened on the front of it. I feel this instrument is well-bought at the price point. Sweetwater Custer Service was OUTSTANDING.

Epiphone zephyr 150th anniversary Deluxe Regent

It is very mixed emotions that I write this review. It is a love/hate experience with this instrument. I wish I could have afforded the PLEX setup, but I could not, and I do not recommend purchasing this guitar at all without the plex setup. First off the finish is so thick that it has a sagging appearance in the uipper left bout. The nut is way high. Both the nut and the bridge buzz when'd played at a normal volume. In other words there does not seem to have been setup in any way. I think the top is way to thick also. The A string tuner is so tight that you almost need a pair of pliers to tune it. The good things: it looks great and most of the fit is good. acoustically this thing is loud and has a good top to bottom balance, in some cases it is as loud as a flat top. The neck feels similar to my Gibson ES5 but is a little thicker. Through an amp, Fender Baseman, Prinston the pickups sound very good, and has a good tonal range. I will continue to make adjustments as I go along to the nut and bridge. If it were not so much of a hassle I would probably return it. They did send me a series of pictures, and I picked one out of the three, but that does NOT compare to actually seeing, feeling and playing a guitar, so you take what you get. I did order a Fender 60s Ventura from the TONE SHOP in Texas with the PLEX setup and my desired Flat Wounds, and the guitar was perfect in every way. A good friend ordered the same guitar (Jaguar Turquoise)from Sweetwater with the same setup, it also was also perfectly done.
Music background: 50 years guitar and bass
