Connect two microphones or mono line-level signals, or even two instruments without the need for DI boxes. Two additional stereo channels are available for synthesizers, drum machines, and other line-level sources. Record and play back two channels of 24-bit/96kHz audio via USB without the need for a separate interface. Factor in its exceptional build quality, and the compact Allen & Heath ZEDi-8 mixer stands out in its class.

Allen & Heath ZEDi-8 8-channel Mixer at a Glance:
  • Record 24-bit/96kHz audio direct to your DAW
  • GSPre preamps based on the GS-R24 recording console

Record 24-bit/96kHz audio direct to your DAW

With USB 2.0 connectivity, the Allen & Heath ZEDi-8 mixer is ready to record and play back 24-bit/96kHz audio. Just connect to your computer or iOS device, open the included Cubase LE software, Cubasis LE app, or your preferred DAW software, and you're ready to go. Separate controls for the USB playback channels allow you to blend USB audio with the Main Mix and Aux Mix independently.

GSPre preamps based on the GS-R24 recording console

Don't be reluctant to plug your best mics into the Allen & Heath ZEDi-8. This compact mixer boasts GSPre preamplifiers, created by analog guru Mike Griffin and based on his acclaimed GS-R24 recording console. These preamps provide lots of headroom and very little noise, and promise to deliver pleasing warmth and depth. Whether you're podcasting or recording vocals for a music project, expect great results from the ZEDi-8's GSPre preamps.

Connect guitar and bass directly, no need for DI boxes

You won't need separate direct boxes to connect your guitar or bass to the ZEDi-8 mixer, unlike many other compact mixers. The first two channels have switchable hi-Z inputs: just hit the switch and connect any electric or acoustic-electric instruments you like. Engage the low-cut filter to help reduce rumble and unwanted low frequencies, then shape your sound to taste with the 2-band EQ.

Allen & Heath ZEDi-8 8-channel Mixer Features:
  • Rugged compact mixer with two mono channels, two stereo channels, and USB recording/playback
  • 2-in/2-out USB 2.0 interface supports 24-bit/96kHz audio quality
  • Includes Cubase LE DAW software for Mac/PC, and Cubasis LE app for iOS
  • GSPre mic preamps offer high headroom and low noise floor
  • Connect guitars and basses without separate DI boxes thanks to switchable hi-Z inputs
  • Low-cut filters to reduce rumble and other unwanted low frequencies
  • Effective sound shaping from 2-band EQs
  • Channels can be individually assigned to the headphone mix
  • XLR outputs for studio monitors or powered PA speakers
  • Smooth 60mm fader for controlling your main mix
  • Rotary controls are secured to the faceplate with steel nuts for maximum durability
The Allen & Heath ZEDi-8 mixer is a great value for studio or stage use.
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Fantastic mixer
I needed something small but with USB. I use this for a home studio to record commercials (I'm a radio DJ)

Everything I needed
This think is a boss. I use it as a main hub for sound in my office. It works great. I also use it with an iPad for broadcasting with Switcher STudio. Great quality. Nice little mixer.

Amazing little tool
As a beginner to recording, it took me a little time to learn how this mixer worked with Garage Band. But once I did I was able to produce great sounding bass and vocal parts to go along with the tracks my guitar and vocalist had already recorded.

Great sound and features at this price
Overall I'm very happy with this. It sounds good in its price class both as an analog mixer and as a basic USB interface, and packs a lot of features into one box. I'm using it to mix a few synths and a sampler on my desk with no laptop and no latency, and I'd be happy to use it at a live gig too.

Pros

As a mixer, it's pretty clean. I don't have a studio console to compare it to, but it's quieter than other brands I have used under $200. I'm not having any noticable hiss or crosstalk get in the way in my small project studio. The headphone output has no problems driving my AKG k271 cans.

Input selection is great! I have stereo synths on the line/inst 1 + 2, and stereo 3/4 and 5/6 inputs using typical 1/4" plugs. Channels 1/2 also have XLR for mics, and you can switch between the mic (XLR) and line/instrument (1/4") with a press of a button. Phantom power is only routed to the XLR plugs, so I don't have to worry about turning it off to protect the synth plugged into the 1/4". That's perfect - I don't need to recable things between taking a meeting and playing the synth.

USB - This mixer is unique versus the competition at this price. First off, there are NO DRIVERS needed. Mac, iOS, Windows 10 and Linux all have what they need built-in. The manual says to get a Windows driver - ignore that if you're on Windows 10. Second off, there's a real button to choose what you record - NO EXTRA CRAPPLETS to install. This lets you switch between recording just inputs 1+2, or recording the full mix (pre or post fader!). I use the M1-M2 source select so I can record a mic or instrument while still listening to the other channels mixed on headphones, or take that Zoom meeting for the day job while playing with a synth on my desk.

Cons

If USB recording and playback are your top priority - an interface like the Focusrite Scarlett will have a cleaner sound and better headphone amp, but you'll need to have a laptop hooked up to set up your monitor mix.

The pre-fade listen is always mono. If you are monitoring a stereo channel (including USB) - it will sum to mono even on the headphone output. If you're trying to set the gain trimmer on a stereo source with PFL - the signal level bars don't show you the level of left & right, they both show the sum which is 3-6 dB hotter those channels would be separately. That's confusing, so if you can double check your levels between your mic inputs (1/2) and stereo inputs again with PFL off to make sure you didn't trim the stereo down too much.

The USB output is too hot. If you set the mix to the mark labeled 0 - it's actually +12 and close to clipping your main mix. Be careful to keep this dialed back in comparison to the other knobs in that row.

Blue power LED is way too bright. If you don't cover it with black tape you'll be blinded trying to patch in a cable in a dim room.

Tips

The "Active" light for USB is only be on when recording or playing. If you plug in your USB cable and this is off, that's ok. Open up an audio app, check your settings to make sure the ZEDi is selected, and the "active" light should go green once you try to play or record.

Windows 10 - Be sure to set Windows to use the same default sample rate (run mmsys.cpl, pick the ZEDi under playback or recording, click properties, advanced and you'll see the choice) for both recording and playback, otherwise you will may run into problems. Use "WASAPI" if your software supports it. The latency is as low as ASIO and it's easier to set up because no extra drivers or software are needed. If you need ASIO, then you can download the free program ASIO4ALL. Search for it and you'll find many tutorials out there.

Great sound and small but lacking home studio essentials.
Great sound and small for a desktop. For Mac users you have to turn it off and on to connect. Not a big problem. My issue is the headphone mix is in mono. To only use headphones only you have to turn off your monitors or unplug them to use headphones in stereo without monitors.
