Yamaha’s YDS-150 Digital Sax Is a Game-changer

The Yamaha YDS-150 digital saxophone is a unique, state-of-the-art wind synth that combines an acoustic sax playing experience with the endless possibilities of a powerful Yamaha sound engine. It all starts with a specially designed mouthpiece that will feel comfortable for sax players while remaining accessible to every musician, as it requires no embouchure technique. On the other end is a brass bell with an inset speaker that works in tandem with one in the neck to generate resonance and project a surprisingly natural sound. In between, Yamaha has paid meticulous attention to the keywork, which features a standard saxophone layout complete with a single octave key and front F, high F#, and low A keys. The robust soundset includes soprano, alto, tenor, and bari saxes, plus a selection of premium synth sounds. Voices are easily selected right on the instrument, and you can edit sounds and effects, change transposition, assign custom altissimo fingerings; set volume, pitch bend and other MIDI parameters, save presets, and more with a dedicated app running on your smart device, which pairs with the YDS-150 via Bluetooth.

73 amazing sounds onboard

Yamaha is one of the premier makers of both saxophones and synthesizers, so it comes as no surprise that the YDS-150 not only plays like a sax — it also sounds like one. Onboard are full-scale samples of real soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes painstakingly recorded in whole tones played by professional saxophonists, as well as cutting-edge synth sounds. The four sax categories are further broken up into subcategories that allow you to select sounds optimized for any and all genres, with full tonality, range, and timbre control. In all, there are 73 Voices onboard, including 56 saxes. Changing from, say, a soprano to an alto is effortless, as the key range is set appropriately for Bb and Eb instruments. And as you’ll probably prefer your synth sounds in concert pitch, the key of C will also sync automatically with those voices when selected. Octave assignments are automatic as well. Play a Bb on soprano, switch to baritone, and that same Bb will voice an octave lower.

Authentic playing feel for any musician

Yamaha, in their wisdom, gave the YDS-150 a standard saxophone key layout that saxophonists will take to intuitively. That gives it a major advantage over other digital wind instruments with seemingly arbitrary proprietary key layouts. What’s more, the YDS-150 offers a realistic playing feel with adjustable key response and tube resonance that mimics the tactile feedback of an acoustic sax as you play. Like an conventional sax, the YDS-150 has and front F and high F# keys and a single octave key, plus a low A that comes in handy for playing baritone parts. And although the mouthpiece, with its synthetic reed, feels like that of a typical alto sax, it requires only a basic embouchure any musician can master. Note expressiveness and real-time modulation such as pitch bend, portamento, and vibrato are a provided by the samples themselves and the instrument’s manual Analog Controller.

An entirely new class of instrument

Combining a standard sax key layout and Yamaha’s innovative Integrated Bell Acoustic System with the functionality of a wind synthesizer, the YDS-150 is a totally new class of instrument. While not a replacement for acoustic saxophones, the Yamaha YDS-150 is designed to go where no traditional horn can. Whether you’re a saxophonist looking for a MIDI controller and late-night practice instrument, or a non-reed player seeking new challenges and adventures, the YDS-150 blurs the line between organic and synthetic, providing the best of both worlds by delivering cutting-edge digital sound with the tactile playing feel of an acoustic wind instrument. Seamlessly blending familiar sax fingering with the prowess of Yamaha’s advanced digital technology, the YDS-150 is the perfect MIDI controller for saxophonists who want to compose on their native instrument.

Innovative Integrated Bell Acoustic System

Yamaha’s groundbreaking Integrated Bell Acoustic System comprises a speaker in a special enclosure, an acoustic tube, and a genuine brass bell. Responding to your breath from the mouthpiece, the YDS-150 generates sound that drives the speaker, prompting the brass bell and the entire instrument to resonate, similar to a traditional saxophone. These vibrations, along with the instrument’s standard key layout, contribute to the uncanny verisimilitude of the YDS0150’s authentic playing feel. Combine that with the powerful capabilities of a Yamaha digital synth engine, and you have a formidable instrument you can use to explore new musical frontiers.

Wireless freedom and comprehensive connectivity

You can power your YDS-150 with four AAA batteries or via its micro USB-to-Host port, which outputs MIDI, making your digital saxophone an ideal master controller for creating music in your DAW of choice. The YDS-150 also outputs MIDI via Bluetooth, giving you the freedom of wireless connectivity with your computer, smart phone, or tablet. A stereo mini headphone jack lets you use your YDS-150 for silent practice without disturbing the neighbors, while its aux input lets you jam along with your favorite tracks. When using headphones, you can even control the ambience from the YDS app, transporting your performance from your living room to Carnegie Hall! At Sweetwater, we’re super excited about the Yamaha YDS-150 digital synthesizer. It’s a game changer.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Is it perfect? No, is it fun? Hell Yes!

I bought this as a practice aid with no expectation of tone or embouchure development. So I like watching baseball, but often think what a waste of time. So little action goes on between pitches, that I usually multi-task like paying bills or researching my next purchases or a DIY project. But what if I could practice scales! I would drive my wife crazy if I played my sax in the living room (I know... I've tried), but with the YDS-150 it's possible and quite effective. The finger layout is so realistic that when I pickup one of my Yanagisawa saxes everything I practiced on the YDS-150 translates. Also, what I thought was a gimmick (various sounds) turns out to be fun. With the flute sound I find myself playing Jethro Tull's "Bouree" or with the harmonica sound and the thumb pitch bend I'm jamming to Black Sabbath's "The Wizard". The YDS-150 also allows me to practice outdoors, no way could I play outdoors in my neighborhood, but now I can! I was unsure how much I would really use it based on it not being a real saxophone, but I use it all the time! I pack it with me everywhere I go. For example, when spending the weekend at my daughter's house and after the grandkids go to bed, no way could I practice with a 2 month old and sleep deprived parents in the house, but now I can!

Collin was great, he called me prior to shipping to clarify my address insuring there would be no issues. Before long we started talking like we were old friends.

Most fun I have every had with an instrument

The instrument is very high quality and played very well right out of the box. I played in the band (clarinet) in junior high and high school and then off and on since then. I have played several other instruments (piano, guitar, mandolin, bass, and dulcimer) over the years. After retiring a few years ago, I started playing alto saxophone and though I had found my favorite instrument. I have wanted a YDS-150 for the past 2 years but did not buy one because of the difficulty getting it. It was hard to find one in stock. I ordered this one and it came 2 days later to my house (VERY PLEASED WITH SHIPPING AND HANDLING FROM SWEETWATER). From the first time I played it, I loved it. After experimenting with different built in sounds, I found 4 in particular that I absolutely love the sound of. It is easy to play and sounds so great by itself and especially good through a stereo amp and a mono amp. The 3rd day I was playing it, I was very pleased with the sound and when I returned back to the family room, my wife had turned down the TV to be able to hear my playing better. She said nothing I have every played has sounded that good. I have found the keys to work very well and very well placed. I had no problems switching back and forth between my saxophones (alto, tenor and soprano) and the YDS-150. I would part with any of my other instruments but not the YDS-150. This is the best sound and most fun I have had with an instrument. It is nice to practice and only really have to worry about fingering and tonging techniques. It has made my practice time more productive and enjoyable.

Sound Fills Larger Spaces

This is an addition to my first review.

For anyone wondering if the sound coming from the YDS-150 can fill a larger area, it can. I attached it to one of my church's sound systems in a multi-purpose room measuring 75' x 85', and using a 3.5 mm TRS to XLR3M cable.

The sound technician's conclusion: "It absolutely filled the room easily".

Hope this is helpful to a prospective buyer.

Jim's Right! It's Fun!

Just wanted to add a few notes I hope a prospective buyer will find helpful.

1) Jim from California summarized it nicely: perfect, no; fun, yes.

2) When I attach my YDS-150 to my practice amp, the sound is PLENTY LOUD.

3) Using the app, I was able to create soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone sax voices, all in the key of C. Greatly reduces the need to transpose. (Still trying to figure out how to create an oboe voice) :)

4) I wanted to comment on a video review by a highly-regarded saxophone performer and educator. He refers to the YDS-150 as "unplayable" and a "gimmicky sax gadget." His main criticism (what he calls a "deal breaker") has to do with finger pressure and his observation that

"[t]he keys don't trigger the desired notes consistently....On my instrument, I have to press very hard in order to register the desired note. If I play with my normal light finger pressure, it doesn't work. Some keys are worse than others, bis, front F, and the octave key are atrociously bad to the point where the instrument is basically unplayable and extremely frustrating."

I can only say that this has not been my experience. Because of my regard for the reviewer, I probably would not have purchased the YDS-150 if I had seen his video beforehand. It's not a saxophone and not a substitute for one. It's a different thing altogether, and takes some getting used to. But, so far, I find it fun, versatile, and completely playable.

Nate Burkhardt is my sales engineer; always a pleasure to work with!

Very Disapointed

I've had mine for over a year. One reason I bought it was so I could practice silently without hooking up more gear. That it does well and the fingering is just like a sax. Those are the good points. I've had my WX5 for over 20 years and in most ways it is far superior to the YDS. For one, the YDS does not have a bite sensor at all. That pretty much eliminates it as a breath controller. Plus
It only has an octave key and a low A thumb key, another huge flaw. Then it does not have midi, might be able to get a Bluetooth midi adapter for one of my synth, haven't tried that yet but why not equip it with midi jacks? Not sure if it's own sounds can be played via midi or not. Really not sure what Yamaha was thinking when they came up with this but it is a huge step backwards from their earlier wind controllers. Lastly, they could have given it more internal sounds. Who were they trying to target with this? Certainly not musicians. I'll keep using this for practice but I doubt if I'll ever use it for recording or live performance. If anybody has had other experiences with it, I'd like to hear from you. I wish I would at least tried out the Roland before I bought this.
