Reviews

Closest Alternative to the Hammond 6MP
As a high school marching band instructor and former Phantom Regiment member, I've played a lot of mellophone mouthpieces over the years, and I always come back to the Hammond 6MP as the gold standard. Recently, I used VennCAD software to do a full breakdown comparison between the Hammond 6MP and the Yamaha MP 14F4—and the Yamaha is impressively close in design and performance.

The cup shape and depth are nearly identical between the two. The Yamaha's backbore is slightly longer, while the Hammond has a marginally wider backbore. The rim profiles differ a bit: the Hammond has a flatter rim while the Yamaha has a rounder contour, especially toward the outside edge. That said, the inner rim diameter and shape are virtually the same, making the Yamaha feel very familiar to play.

Dimensionally, the Yamaha 14F4 is just a touch larger in rim diameter and cup depth—barely noticeable—but it follows the same shape characteristics. In real-world playing, both mouthpieces feel remarkably similar in tone and response. The Yamaha offers great flexibility and a smooth, centered sound, making it ideal for both marching and concert environments.

If you love the feel and sound of the 6MP but need a more affordable option, the Yamaha MP 14F4 is by far the closest match I've found. It's a fantastic mouthpiece for students and even experienced players who want high-level performance without paying top dollar.
