The Modern Hammond for the Tonewheel Obsessed

At Sweetwater, the name Hammond commands respect. It’s synonymous with the classic tonewheel organs such as the B-3 that played an outsized role in the music revolution of the 1960s and ’70s. In the digital era, Hammond assumed a leadership role in developing cutting-edge “clonewheel” organs that deliver those legendary organ sounds. Now, the B-3 experience reaches a breathtaking new level of realism with the Hammond XK-4 Portable Organ.

Next-gen Modeled Tone Wheel 2 sound engine

Equipped with Hammond’s powerful next-gen Modeled Tone Wheel 2 (MTW2) sound engine, the XK-4 brings sounds to life by meticulously reproducing the 91 tone wheels that drove all vintage Hammond organs. This advanced technology re-creates imperfections such as pitch and volume fluctuations that gave vintage Hammonds their distinctive sound. It also gives you unfettered freedom in customizing your tone. Hammond’s latest tube modeling system reproduces coveted vacuum tube warmth, while vintage Hammond “matching transformer” emulation fleshes out the sound with fullness and harmonic richness. Add in the tactile feedback of nine real drawbars, and you have the hands-on ability to tweak your tonewheel organ sounds to perfection in real time.

The tonewheel experience — and more

Hammond’s proprietary 9-level virtual multi-contact system delivers the distinctive feel of the mechanical multi-contact keyboard of a vintage Hammond organ. What’s more, if you connect any of the optional Hammond MIDI pedalboards, you’ll also get multi-contact feel on the pedal keyboard. Of course, the latest cutting-edge Digital Leslie algorithm is onboard, and it painstakingly models the airflow of Leslie rotors, faithfully reproducing their unique tone and 3-dimensional effect. Complete with the latest Digital Leslie and a selection of Italian, British, and Japanese transistor combos as well as classical and theater pipe organs, the Hammond XK-4 is a stunning achievement, and a worthy inheritor of the title, “King of Instruments.”

Hammond XK-4 Portable Organ Features:

  • 61 semi-weighted, velocity-sensing, waterfall-style keys; 9 drawbars
  • Pitch bend and Modulation wheels; Master EQ
  • Traditional drawbar organ tone reproduced in detail by the new MTW2 sound engine
  • 9-level virtual multi-contact system
  • Intuitive and logical interface gives you easy access to all functions
  • Color display for quick check of performance status and programming data
  • User-assignable knobs and switches can be used to control internal functions and external devices
  • Master EQ allows for instant tweaking in any performance environment
  • Onboard Digital Leslie with advanced algorithm models the airflow of Leslie rotors
  • Italian, British, and Japanese transistor combo organ sounds
  • Classical and theater pipe organs

Excellent Hammond sound!!!

Bought my Hammond xk4 through SWEETWATER WEBSITE. I do own a Hammond A105 and needed a portable equipment for a live musical performance, when I started using the xk4 I wasn't to happy about the factory presets, but when I went through the menu I found all kinds of settings that allow me to create my own sounds . The keyboard looks good with a nice vintage keys color, it it's well designed . If there any improvements in the future, I will suggest other effects like more stereo projecting sounds.

Hammond XK-4 Heritage Series

Hammond has captured the vintage sound of their original B3s. In addition, the simulated Leslie is amazing. Not only are the sounds of the two speeds accurate, the interum sound as it is winding up to fast Leslie and winding down to slow Leslie is incredibly accurate as well. Line recording this instrument is a "no brainer". You no longer have to concern yourself with the Leslie horn baffles generating excessive fan type noise that were generated in the original Leslies. Sweetwater Sound, never let's me down!

XK-4 nice when you’re the roadie

I've had Hammonds for decades, still do. I've played them in many bands, many venues. I've moved them all, occasionally with help. I love the modern sounds of the XK-5, especially with the second manual. But that's a near beast to move myself, so it's house bound. I have an older XK-1C, but it doesn't have the magic sound of the XK-5. I was looking for a 20 lb Hammond that captures the essence of the XK-5 sounds, without moving a Leslie to get it. Enter the XK-4
One of the first pleasant surprises was the keyboard. It has some of the same features of the XK-5, imitating successfully the 9 contacts on the original 50 year old Hammonds that I was looking for. Playing fast and with a light touch you feel like it weighs 400 lbs, and was made when Ike was president. It sounds right, plays right, feels right, has the 11 pin Leslie connection, as well as a quality digital Leslie if preferred.
I've been using headphones to program and critically hear the leakage, key click, overdrive, digital Leslie, virtual 9 contact keyboard, etc. it is authentic Hammond ( aka Hammond Suzuki ). I have some other quality keyboards that emulate tone bar organs. They are good keyboards that sound nice with other instruments. They are B and B+ organ emulations. But I would never rely on them to try solo organ pieces for musicians with golden ears. The XK-4 could pull it off on A- level ( I'm a hard grader ). It has all the stuff an experienced Hammond player wants; leakage, overdrive, key click, fast action, etc. I won't sell my XK-5, but I'll be listing my SK-2 and XK-1c this winter. My go to portable Hammond for now is the XK-4,… with the Gator slim 61 bag it moves easily and packs quickly.
No buyers remorse. Glad I got it. It sounds so good in headphones that it could be months before I connect my Leslie 3300 to it.
Thanks Matt and thank you Sweetwater! I'm the first on my block to own and play the XK-4.
Music background: Semi pro for decades, still play to stay sane, relatively

Love it!

I recently got my XK-4 from Sweetwater and couldn't be happier. After playing it at home for a few days, it made its debut with my band and sat so well in the mix. It's replacing my SK-1/Ventilator combo (which sounds great) and takes things to a new level. I didn't know what I was missing until I started playing the XK-4; Hammond really stepped up their game with this one. The B3/Leslie sound is there!
