Eye-catching Shell Pack with Powerful Sound

TAMA's Starclassic Walnut/Birch Lacquer drums take the basic design of their acclaimed Starclassic Maple series and put a cool twist on it. These drums feature the combination of mellower birch with the stiffness of walnut. This results in a supremely dynamic sound that features the characteristic warmth of birch shells enhanced by the heavier attack of walnut plies. Beyond that, Starclassic Walnut/Birch Lacquer drums come complete with all of the outstanding hardware that sets the Starclassic series apart. This includes TAMA's die-cast hoops, Star-Cast mounting system, and Quick-Lock tom brackets, plus each shell comes outfitted with quality Evans heads.

Premium die-cast zinc hoops provide consistent tuning and superior tone

Did you know that the hoops on your drum affect far more than your tuning stability? That's why TAMA created premium die-cast zinc hoops for their Starclassic Walnut/Birch toms. Manufactured via a high-density injection molding process, rather than a conventionally stamped triple-flanged hoop method, these extremely consistent hoops provide uniform bolt contact and give your Starclassic shell pack a crisper attack with added high-end resonance.

Evans durability and solid sound

The toms included in this Starclassic shell pack feature Evans Genera G2 2-ply clear batter heads and Genera G1 1-ply clear bottom heads, while the bass drum makes use of an EQ4 clear batter head. The G2 sports two plies, 7-mil each, and delivers an excellent blend of sustain, depth, and attack, while offering consistency and durability. The G1 offers a blend of sustain, warmth, and sensitivity via a 10-mil single-ply film. Exclusive 10-mil single-ply film construction imbues the EQ4 with durability and a woody attack that speaks, both live and in the studio. All three of these drumheads are versatile, making them a great choice for drummers who switch between a variety of styles.

TAMA crafts top-shelf drums for top-shelf drummers

TAMA builds their drums with painstaking attention to detail, precision, and care in order to deliver the best drums possible. And countless touring drummers and session aces, as diverse as Anika Nilles and Metallica's Lars Ulrich, swear by them. Yet in addition to crafting superb drums, TAMA is determined to innovate on the hardware front, as well. Their Iron Cobra Coil bass drum pedals are among the world's most popular, and you'll find that cymbal stands, snare stands, and drum thrones from TAMA are just as heavy-duty and reliable.

Walnut/birch shells included (depth x diameter):

  • 8" x 12" rack tom
  • 16" x 16" floor tom
  • 14" x 22" bass drum
  • Snare not included

Wow.

I've been playing professionally for well over a decade, and this is easily the best kit I've ever owned, and in any price bracket. I grew up playing a birch kit, and I immediately recognized that strong birch attack. What I wasn't expecting was such powerful and clear low end. Which I can only assume comes from the walnut. I did a session on this kit the same day I received it and had to do very little to it. Rack tom needed very little tweaking, I dropped some ripped up cotton balls in the floor Tom and tuned it very low, I removed the front kit head because I didn't have time to port it, and then I did my session. I bragged to my brother all day about how good these drums sounded and that he needed to listen to the audio sample I had sent him. We were on FaceTime together when he finally did listen, and his jaw dropped. He wants samples, which I intend to make.

This isn't even mentioning the brilliant hardware. The floor tom legs and rack tom bracket both integrate a brilliant new innovation that cuts down set up and tear down time significantly, all while supporting greater shell resonance.

I initially was bummed that I wasn't going to be able to get the hyperdrive sizes (12x7, 16x14) but after hearing them back on record I have no regrets about that. I will DEFINITELY be adding the matching 10" and 14" toms, and maybe even the marching 8".

Another concern I want to squash is I've seen many comments on demos of this kit that communicate uneasiness in regards to the short 14" depth. Drummers thinking they're going to be missing out on low end, punch, etc. false. I genuinely have no idea why any drum company at any point thought that it was a good idea to exceed the 14" depth. The greatest sounding and feeling kick drum I've ever played was a 22x12. If you're used to a bass drum that's 16 or 18, or even 20" deep, you'll be very pleasantly surprised by this bass drum. You'll find an incredibly rich low end, plenty of attack, and an outstanding response under your foot (or feet). Less air to move = more immediate smack and response.

If you're on the fence - just buy them. You will not find a better engineered, better sounding, nor more beautiful kit in this price bracket.

Tama Starclassic Phantasm Oyster 3 Piece

I've owned this kit for 2 years now, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It's my first "Professional" drum set, but man, I am telling you that I will probably never play another brand of drums in my life again. The quick lock system on these drums is unbeatable, I always have a super consistent setup when gigging. On top of that I always get compliments on the finish, I haven't personally seen anyone else gigging this specific finish in the area/genre of music I play (Metalcore) but under stage lights all of the different colors of the kit really come to life.

The Walnut/birch shells are (in my opinion) superior to the predecessor, which is the highly sought after Birch/Bubinga. I've had the chance to compare both my kit and a Birch Bubinga back to back and I'd choose the walnut/birch any day. There's a certain warmth and attack you get with these shells that's almost unbeatable.

Moral of the story; if you're looking for a super killer 3 piece kit that's going to handle tons of road abuse or a studio application, this is the best bang for the buck in this specific bracket of drums. Definitely beats out the DW Design series in terms of build quality and perks.
